The Rest of Us Just Live Here
The Rest of Us Just Live Here

Review:FIRST THOUGHTS

This was the second book I’ve read written by Patrick Ness. After reading When a Monster Calls from him, I figured any book written by him would be amazing. So, when I found this, I just had to pick it up.

CHARACTERS

I found the characters to be super interesting. They each had their own internal conflict. Mikey, the protagonist, has anxiety and OCD. It was really cool to read through the perspective of a character with those issues. I have an anxiety disorder... Read more

The Arrival
The Arrival

Review:Beautiful illustrations! The actually quality of the book is very nice as well. However, the pictures create a way out there description of immigration. I get the gist of the story, but for the most part it was hard to follow and I lost interest. My children had no interest in it at all. Read more

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Review:Have you ever listened to a wonderful storyteller tell a wonderfully long story with an ending that just makes you say, tell the story again? That is Aristotle and Dante. I finished the prose-like story and wanted to go back - to see the clues that were so obvious now.

I want to say more, but I will give too much away. It is a story that touched me and I have already passed the book on to two other friends.

You fascinate me, Benjamin Alire Saenz. Read more

The Call
The Call

Review:I don't know that I have ever read any books that were set in Ireland. That changed with this book. Ireland is cut off from the rest of the world and when kids reach a certain age they receive the call and have to enter in a contest where it is very hard to win. Nessa is the main character and she is handicapped. She doesn't want to be helped and doesn't play the woe is me card. This book takes some of the irish legends and uses them to make the story even more compelling. I loved this boo... Read more

The Magician (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel)
The Magician (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel)

Review:Thankfully, this book greatly picks up the action in the series, and I found it much more enjoyable than the first book. Instead of needing to introduce the strange, magical world of Nicholas Flamel, Scott focuses more on ramping up the stakes for his characters. The baddies who want to turn humans back into slaves are congregating to work together to bring down Flamel and the twins, but Flamel has friends of his own, who are able to help in fight back in this one.

This book mostly takes... Read more

Parable of the Talents (Earthseed)
Parable of the Talents (Earthseed)

Review:The book is set in the post-SHTF world, action taking place in the Pacific Northwest/Northern California. It describes United States in a such a way that Germany leading up to the Second World War comes to mind. Violence, poverty, unemployment, inflation and a general sense of despair pervades the world of this book. Simple existence and the sense of humanity is not taken for granted, as characters in this book are forced to fight for their place under the sun.

Protagonist of this novel i... Read more

Carve the Mark
Carve the Mark

Review:Great new book by Veronica Roth! The story was more about people than actions, which I really appreciated because Akos and Cyra are terrific––he's sweet and sympathetic yet strong and determined, and she's a feisty warrior learning to let people into her life. So good! The world-building is good and the action is strong, but this is definitely an emotion-heavy story. The interactions with the two main characters are what sell it. While there were certain things I could predict, there were some s... Read more
