Politics & Government
Review:Understanding that it was written at the time of King Henry VIII, I found the style of writing demanding. What we would know as "run-on sentences" and arcane language usage made it difficult. But, I also found it interesting. Read more
Review:Noam Chomsky is an amazing author. He picks away the dogma and doctines that Americans view the world through and offers a startling new way to look at the world. It's a world controlled by the elites. At first his ideas are hard to believe, then he might be a little right, and then he's dead on. His analysis is coherent, well documented, and extremely intriguing. In Understanding Power he touches on foreign policy, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the ideological control and propaganda, intellec... Read more
Review:This book should be required reading for everyone who decides questions of war and peace, even as a citizen writing letter to Congress or the President. General Butler gives a whole new view of what is involved in using military force "to protect American interests." WARNING: Some of the photographs in the back of war's results are not just graphic but gruesome. Read more
Review:This is an essential book in understanding international relations, history of US intervention abroad and societal power structures. Well written, easy to follow. You need to have some historic background on some of the conflicts and issues discussed.
This is one of my favorite books and definitely have to read more than once to absorb is all. Read more
Review:This book provides a detailed overview of the critical problems of our modern world. It is written by one of the most thoughtful and courageous intellectuals in a clear style, richly documented, and extremely well researched. It deals with climate change, nuclear dominance, the causes of terrorism, the refugee explosion and a lot more, giving views on causes and effects.
This book is strongly recommended to all who care about our world, especially politicians seeking a broad view of intern... Read more
Review:An excellent statement of the position that recent Government, Society, and Academic programs and policies are doing more to hurt the success of various ethnic groups rather than help them. A very easy read but packed with very valid points. Highly recommended. Read more
Review:Fareed Zakaria puts forth a commanding and passionate argument in favor of constitutional liberty over democracy.
As he points out, countries that rushed into democracy without first establishing institutions to secure individual freedom saw democracy degenerate rather than evolve. The world is littered with examples including Iran, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Egypt, and perhaps soon Iraq.
Zakaria views constitutional liberty, which refers to the protection of individual rights via the ru... Read more
Review:Excellent, insightful, perceptive. Now if only we can get the politicians in DC to read, discuss, and think about the implications of dealing with a rising China then there is hope of avoiding war. I am not optimistic in view of the rampant dysfunction in the current administration and the Congress.
It should be required reading for both the President, his cabinet, and the Congress. I am sure it is a must read for our military and the Defense Department. Read more
Review:Fareed Zakaria provides history and the insight needed to understand where we are and how we got here. Without that insight you cannot best understand where we are going. I believe he is spot on. It is time for us, Americans, to realize we are only a part of the whole. We are currently a big part of it but in the end it is the whole that matters. He is correct in that we failed by succeeding. The world learned what we wanted to teach them. We succeeded. Now they are our competition. If ... Read more
