Review:A very slow read with much repetition, but I suppose the story had to be told that way. How else can a novel convey the sensation of spending night-after-night, fully dressed, waiting for the ominous knock on the door? What to pack for being taken away to an endless interrogation? Likewise, Shostakovich is not depicted with much personality; a timid little man whose closest relationships are uxorious. Not a hero who beat the system, but a survivor.
Many of these stories about the life o... Read more
Review:I received a very small book. I was not made aware of this while I ordered the book. I never realized there were small books with tiny printing. This is very disconcerting, especially to my 71 year old eyes! Read more
Review:The story of the Navy's achievements, both technical and operational, deserved better. Although I found some of the content highly interesting, both the information and the enjoyment were diminished by a number of shortcomings.
The stories of some of the actual intelligence operations and missions are incredibly interesting. They deserved better. Perhaps part of the problem is that the writers came from the NYT where they typically write stories about subjects where they have greater fami... Read more
Review:I have read and enjoyed many of Mr. McCullough's books, and this one is no exception. The speeches all encourage the understanding of history, but each is unique and I learned a great deal. It was also a quick read - the individual speeches are just the right length for the bits of "free reading" time I have every day. I recommended this book to several friends, all of whom enjoyed it as much as I did. Read more
Review:I am kicking myself for missing the deadline of the Kindle return policy. I'm only about 20% of the way through this book and while they do make valid points and have plenty of information to back their claims what kills the book is the author's tone (particularly using Latin and other pretentious wording to reassure the reader of how extra intelligent this guy is) and employing similar tactics of bias, manipulation, and carefully ignoring certain information to give readers the wrong impression... Review:This is a well-written book about selection and training of US Army special forces. I really enjoyed experiencing selection, qualification and particularly Robin Sage through the writer's words. I highly recommend to anyone and also for prospective SF warriors! Read more
Review:Whether you're into mindset, politics, or media/marketing, you'll enjoy this book. There's so much value to get from this book and it will truly enrich your knowledge base.
The parts that added the most value for me though were the mindset and media/marketing parts. I've been following following Mike at dangerandplay ever since the beginning of this year and he's always delivered value no matter what. This book is a continuation of that.
In MAGA mindset, Mike reveals more about the... Read more
Review:Hisham Matar's memoir of his return to Libya after an absence of 30 years in an attempt to determine the fate of his father is a wonderfully written and moving read that's part mystery and part conflicted homage to a country and a man absent from Matar's life for many years. Matar--a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and Man Booker Prize for the equally wonderful (and no doubt inspired by these events) "In the Country of Men"--writes with a the passion and insistent inquiries ... Review:A disturbing but incredibly fascinating story, especially how the government was heavily involved in the activities and the subsequent cover-up. DeCamp, a good friend of CIA Chief and whistle-blower William Colby, is a real hero for writing and publishing such a dangerous story! Read more
Review:The lessons of history recorded for us by Sollzhenitzn are pertinent to this generation, long after the fall of the Soviet Union. The same kinds of oppression arise over and over in various times and places. We were blessed to have this great author and true prophet here for some years. He has left a record for us and a warning in his address at Harvard (?) years ago when he predicted the kind of cultural and moral decline we have been experiencing and urged our nation to take responsibility to ...
