Review:As a fan of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and his emotional, almost ranting narratives about the unnumbered innocents (and the few that were guilty) carted from Black Maria to interrogation (and if not summarily executed) to the gulag, I came out of both volumes of the "Gulag Archipelago" wanting to know more than just the angry anecdotal diatribes that Solzhenitsyn reiterates endlessly. I wanted facts, reasons, and perhaps an observer somewhat farther removed from the tragedy than Solzhenitsyn. I orde... Read more
Review:This takes some time to get through but the comprehensive view and thorough presentation are necessary and worth it. It shows the complexity of the issues yet explains the numerous variables simply. It is easy to understand and should be required reading for everyone. Read more
Review:Excellent. Extremely well-researched, extremely well-written. If you read ONLY ONE book on Joe Stalin, this should be IT. It is no accident that John LeCarre highly praises it --- on the
cover! Montefiore asks ALL of the questions.....and answers MOST of them, too! Amazing. Read more

Review:This is one of the most comprehensive books about how the economy affects our environment I've ever read, as well as very clearly written, with stories about individuals, corporations, governments and movements. Very easy to read, full of information. Read more
Review:Palmieri’s message is loud and clear. It’s time.
I watched Jennifer Palmieri on Rachel Maddow Show last night and decided I need to hear what she had to say. She was up close and personal and in a position to be perhaps a little more forward looking and perhaps less blame placing.
Her message is loud and clear. It’s time.
Women and children need to lead the way. Read more

Review:Super good book on the subject of severe stress response. The title is a bit misleading when you first read it. I strongly suggest this book to anyone that has experienced a situation involving the severe stress of combat, rape or the current exposure to our growing domestic issues from both law enforcement side and civilian side. This is not a how to do book on killing. It is just the opposite in my opinion. I would like to thank Mr. Grossman for his fine work. Read more
Review:Nobody is powerful and stunning in its breadth and depth of analysis. There are many things to be written about the violence that Black and poor bodies face throughout this nation, but only this book could have been written by Marc Lamont Hill. Hill keenly pulls on sociology, legal studies, and myriad other traditions to highlight the common thread of State violence and its influence on the most vulnerable. This book is a must read for those just coming to the topic as well as those well versed ... Read more
Review:This book puts a face on poverty by dissecting the complex web of cause/effect, following personal stories of American families. "Not just low wages but also low education, not just dead-end jobs but also limited abilities, not just insufficient savings but also unwise spending, not just poor housing but also poor parenting, not just lack of health insurance but also lack of healthy households. (p285)"
Poverty is a constellation of problems, none of which exist in a vacuum. "A job alone... Read more
