Sex Object: A Memoir
Sex Object: A Memoir

Review:Currently the top negative review states, "She start [sic] off as if her problems are the problems of all women."
As a reminder to this critic, the book is titled "Sex Object: A MEMOIR." This is one woman's life, although I can imagine a commonality to the very troubling issues discussed herein; I am a man, so will only ever know of most such issues through secondhand accounts. As at least half of my friends and colleagues are women, this book is not so eye-opening and confrontational to me a... Read more

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body
Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body

Review:While I admire Ms. Gay's attempt to share her journey with the reader, the book comes across as shallow and lacking genuine depth. Yes she told of the event that led to her lifelong battle but where is the inner work? Perhaps I missed it because I stopped reading. Ms. Gay if you haven't done so please consider therapy. Please fight for the 12 year old girl who so desperately needs healing. From what I read the 12 year old is not only traumatized from the actual event but she now carries the guil... Read more

Review:I read this book as a part of a committee and wasn't crazy about it. I'm far from a prude but the obscene language was a bit much and overdone. She could have told the same story without excessive use of some of the chosen words. Overall topic of women's body image and the impact life experiences have had on her was good. She seems to have made an impact on other comedians and social media being used as a venue for bullying and speaking negatively about women. Read more

Alias Grace: A Novel
Alias Grace: A Novel

Review:"Alias Grace" is Margaret Atwood's finest novel after "Cat's Eye." Stylistically, through its elegant parodies, it is a love letter to classic nineteenth-century fiction. If you enjoy Dickens, Scott, Thackeray, Melville, or Twain, for example, you'll love this novel. If you never heard of, much less read, any of those other authors, you may still love this novel. Yet philosophically, "Alias Grace" is thoroughly post-modern. Experience, Atwood tells us, is compartmentalized, like the mind, l... Read more

A Pittsburgh Family’s Battle with Evil in Their Home
A Pittsburgh Family’s Battle with Evil in Their Home

Review:Probably the best book I have ever read on the paranormal. Bob Cranmer does an outstanding job telling the story of how he and his family overcame a demon that had been terrifying his family for years. Bob decides to fight back after his family starts waking up with claw marks on their skin and also seeing a grim reaper looking entity in the house. With help from numerous priests and mostly his strong faith in God and Jesus, Bob fights back at the Demon and never gives in. His persistence and co... Read more

A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road - The Long Haul
A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road - The Long Haul

Review:Entertaining and insightful look into the world of long haul movers. Equally enjoyable was the author's discussion on CSPAN's Book TV. I have moved numerous times while living in California. I do all the packing as it is a special skill to get it right; then hire a mover for the actual haul. I cannot yet see how or when this manual labor will be supplanted by robots, at most only the haul itself. The ending was fitting for a Joyce or DeLillo, summed up in a mere two words. Read more

You Know I Love You Because You're Still Alive - Confessions of a Middle Aged Working Mom
You Know I Love You Because You're Still Alive - Confessions of a Middle Aged Working Mom

Review:I really found very little humor in this book. To be honest I couldn't get past the second chapter. I have raised 5 of my own children and the pride I have in them is in my heart and my mind. If I speak of it, it is to them. I really can't abide someone who bores everyone around her with "my son is better than yours" tales. Sorry, its just not my kind of book. Read more

Daily Rituals: How Artists Work
Daily Rituals: How Artists Work

Review:I can barely put this book down, it's so fascinating. Ironic though that I'm sucked in reading about people being productive, because after 20 minutes of browsing I certainly haven't achieved many of my own goals. I will say that it's the best bathroom reading book ever. Pick it up and flip through, read one or two rituals, and you're out of there. If at some point in the future I die and you're one of my biographers reading this, you totally have permission to say one of my rituals was reading ... Read more

Let's Take the Long Way Home - A Memoir of Friendship
Let's Take the Long Way Home - A Memoir of Friendship

Review:This memoir was not compelling or revealing. I had expected more given the general reader and editorial reviews and the fact that Caldwell is a Pulitzer winner for criticism. Who would guess that someone who reads, analyzes, and writes about the quality of the writing of others would put together such a dull and evasive memoir? The most I can say for the writing is that it was grammatically sound.

There were surely elements of Caldwell and Knapp's lives that would have been fascinating... Read more
