The Rules Do Not Apply
The Rules Do Not Apply

Review:Well-written and intense but so intimate - as if you’ve somehow always known Ariel. It’s a love letter to life that - like many great love stories - dances round and ultimately ends in the land of “what could have been.” I hung on nearly every word, highlighted passage after beautiful passage and wanted to weep with the raw realness of it all. Bravo for one of the most authentic memoirs I’ve read in a long time. Read more

Man's Search For Meaning
Man's Search For Meaning

Review:This is not just a book about Dr. Frankl's experiences as a concentration camp (Auschwitz) survivor. It is an inspiring explanation of how a person's outlook on any situation is not subjective, but instead, objective. One's purpose in life and meaning on this world does not have to be defined by society's measure of success. Very inspiring, to say the least. Read more

Review:I didn't realize how well traveled Helen Keller was nor did I know that she had authored a book! My AAUW group is reading this for a meeting we will have where we must navigate a "course" and eat a dinner blind-folded. Very enlightening. Read more

Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey - The River of Doubt
Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey - The River of Doubt

Review:Fantastic chronicle of TR's descent into the madness of Brazil's Amazon jungle. This true story is a page turner. TR embarks on a bully adventure only to discover his hired safari guides have no experience nor have they properly provided for the expedition. As a result TR and his son, and their crew, face imminent death at every turn and barely get out with their lives. Riveting, true and brilliantly written. Read more

Autobiography of Mark Twain, Vol. 1

Review:Autobiography of Mark Twain - 100th Anniversary Edition Buying what I thought was the new Mark Twain autobiography, this book arrived. Same title, looks authentic, but appears to be an outside instant publishing effort which slipped its product onto the Amazon catalog. Telltale evidence: printer's mark on back page: "24 March 2011" -- just a couple of days before I ordered the book.

The book itself is f... Read more

If You Ask Me: (And of Course You Won't)

Review:Betty, at her finest! I loved this book specifically because of the number of personal, previously unpublished pictures from Betty's personal life. Having read all of her other books I'd say this is definitely worth the purchase! Read more

A Ride Across America and How to Realize a More Enjoyable Old Age
A Ride Across America and How to Realize a More Enjoyable Old Age

Review:I agree, it is an admirable accomplishment, but as a cycling book it leaves a lot to be desired. The journal entries are monotonous, and the fact that the author knows almost nothing about the bike he rides and shows no inclination to learn even how to adjust a brake or a derailleur leaves me feeling like my money would have been better spent elsewhere. Motherless Brooklyn
Motherless Brooklyn

Review:The inimitable narrative voice of Lionel Essrog grabs the reader from page one and never lets go. We are moved to equal parts laughter and tears by this Tourette's afflicted orphan, who obsessively attacks the puzzle of his mentor's murder. Lionel's mountain of tics provides some hilarious moments, but other passages are so poignantly painful that I literally had to pause and look away as I read them. Unfortunately, odds are the reader will lose interest in the details of Lionel's case long befo... Read more
