Market Forces: A Novel
Market Forces: A Novel

Review:MARKET FORCES by Richard K. Morgan is brilliant and brutal, a near-future SF thriller about businessmen who manage wars (backing the side who they think will earn them the most profit if victorious) and climb the corporate ladder by killing off their competition in gladiatorial car duels.

This book is not only as good as his two previous novels, it's better; in fact, it's the best SF book of the 21st century so far, if you ask me. It reads as if it were written by Harlan Ellison channeli... Read more

A Modest Proposal
A Modest Proposal

Review:Swift was a satirist that defined the word. Before there was the Leftist cry of "Eat the Rich", this eighteenth century writer proposed a more practical solution to the problem of to many mouths to feed, and not enough to fill them. Cut out the middleman (pun intended) and "Eat the Poor". The young ones are the tenderest. Read more

A Valuable Guide to Knowing - and Loving Your Wife
A Valuable Guide to Knowing - and Loving Your Wife

Review:I'm desperate to improve my marriage and this book looked well-reviewed and seemingly solid at first glance. The caveat to my review is that I'm only half way done with the book AND I've yet to attempt it's methodologies (just got it today).

Here are my objective observations thus far:

1) VERY Christian-based. I guess I'm ok with that, but we'll see how that bears out.
2) VERY traditional/old school regarding sex roles. I guess I'm just a sensitive new-age guy, but I cook, I ... Read more

You Shall Know Our Velocity
You Shall Know Our Velocity

Review:I don't know what book other reviewers have read, but I'm inclined to think it wasn't this one. Or, at the very least, they didn't pay all that much attention.
YSKOV is about a world wide jaunt. But as with any great book, it's about so much more.
Let me ask, do you think Old Man and the Sea was solely about an old man on a fishing trip?
The main plot in YSKOV, the trip and the subsequent random acts of charity therein, are secondary elements.
This book is about a trip, that much i... Read more

Review:I have read and loved other books by Dave Eggers (i.e., What Is the What and Hologram for the King) and was anticipating a good, engaging read. Instead I found a saga of unappealing characters and creepy circumstances that I didn't want inside my head! (Lots of references to s***, for example: Carl's unruly bowels; the guy who liked to smell it on his finger; emptying out the waste from the RV...) I can sort of understand the larger theme(s) and was vaguely curious as to how it would end, and I... Read more

Review:Straczynski's second volume picks up nicely where the first leaves off, both humanizing and distancing the Kryptonian in such a unique fashion, it's almost stunning to think that is hasn't been down before now. Truly a great read. Kudos to Straczynski for making the Man of Steel relevant again. Read more

Review:I think it's obnoxious to require these sections in order to submit a review. If reviews are as important as they say, they would let us have the option of submitting our number of stars without forcing an explanation. They give us these things to fill out at the immediate end of a book when it takes time to think about a book to have anything relevant to say. Read more
