Graphic writing. It was like you were there. I got a real understanding of the fighting these young men did and the bond that lives with them forever. I can almost understand why they don't talk about what happened, it was just too much for any human to dwell upon.

I became aware of this book when it was referenced as a good book to read by Marcus Luttrell in his book entitled 'Service-A Navy Seal at War'. It proved to be a good reference by Mr Luttrell.
It was a heart-felt description of how the Pacific theatre must have been. It showed how every day events on the battlefield went without glorification of any person.
An easy book to read and I was sad when it ended. I too would highly recommend this book.

Very detailed and thorough account. R.V. and the rest of the Marines in the pacific experienced some of the most ferocious fighting in the war.
R.V. was an excellent soldier who went above and beyond his call to duty in the most dreadful circumstances. R.V. and fellow Marines are heroes.

Sgt. Burgin has produced a very readable account of the reality of fighting in the south pacific in WWII.
His personal memories are priceless.
As he leads us through the battles, victories and painful losses - we are reminded of how much was sacrificed by so many to secure freedom for generations to come.
Thank you Sgt Burgin for your service.

Having read "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge, it is difficult to compare "Islands" with that book--a classic of WWII. I think overall, the book is well written and gives a foxhole view of what conditions were like for the average combat soldier fighting in the Pacific.

I thought "with the old breed" and "helmet for my pillow" provided more detail. R.V. Burgin's story is less detailed, but it is his story, which should be read. I found the last chapter a fascinating insight into PTSD. Overall a good read.
