I have great respect for the men and women involved in WWll. I have read many books about their bravery. This book reveals much of their personal feelings. It helps to humanize their sacrifices. That was my parents generation. I wish young people today could have the respect I have for this generation! This book might help!

The book was incredibly good. The brave vets and brave nurses gave first hand accounts of their experiences in the war. I learned a great deal about the war in the Pacific and the extent of the inhumanity demonstrated by the Japanese soldiers.

I have read so many books that cover the European theater. This book covers the PACIFIC theater. It should be required reading in all USA high schools. The author Mr Rowell wrote an excellent history.
One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer :: An Infantryman's Life after World War II - China Marine :: Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (A Puffin Book) :: Rebel's Blade (The Aermian Feuds Book 1) :: A Marine at War in the Pacific - Islands of the Damned

Greatly enjoyed reading this book. I gained a lot of insight into the reasons why the guys felt the way they did about the Naps. I think this book should be included in the American history classes of our country.

What a great, but humbling reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that these "kids" made for me, as well as future generations of Americans. It renews my faith in mankind, and makes me prouder than ever that I have the God-given privilege to be called an American. Thanks for all who have given their lives so that we live in freedom.

Awesome book! The personal accounts bring everything to a new level of what these heroes went through! The amount of research and interviewing that went into this book is incredible. Thank you for giving me a much better understanding of just what went on in the South Pacific and truly how brutal Japan was. I bet you are a magificent teacher! ??

Excellent book. I learned a lot of details about the battles in the Pacific that I had not heard before. From the personal stories I learned once again of the heart and bravery of true Americans that our nation needs to hear in these days more than ever.

Matt Rozell has an eye for making sure that history is not lost. His book pieces together the stories and accounts of those who lived through WWII. We tend to look back on these young men as heroes, which they are. We fail to realize that most of the men that fought in WWII were not born professional soldiers - they were predominantly boys who answered the nation's call during some of humanity's darkest hours. I pray that our country never again has to experience the fear, pain, and heartbreak that these men and their families felt. The modern-day student of history would be remiss to not explore the stories collected within this book.

How I love reading the personal stories of the everyday men and women who served our country in WWII. They teach us courage in horrific situations even when it means death. I am grateful for these stories to keep alive their memories. I hope we are never faced with what they were called to do.

Many accounts of the experience of dozens of servicemen who had a part in winning WWII ,some at great cost. Not as much blood and guts fighting as some eastern front accounts, but a good overview of the experiences of a variety of soldiers, sailors, and a female medical technician. Have read about this war for years but still learned about events new to me.

I'm so appreciative that the author dedicated himself to preserving these memories for future generations. These sacrifices for our freedom become so personal when recalled by those experiencing the moment.

This book was a great depiction of how a generation of Americans got thrown into the 2nd World War and how they persevered to save the world as we all know it. It always amazes me that the men who fought in this war were so young, but that didn't matter. They survived horrific situations and came back to the US to lead productive lives.

Not much is talked about involving the battle in the Pacific, but our fathers hold nothing back in recounting the terrible things that went on over there. A must read for any history buffs of WW II, that want to know what happened to some of the heroes of the war to end all wars. I would recommend it to anyone.

What a great project for young people- making it very personal for them. They really need to know the US history during this time. I am sure this was much more interesting than reading it in a book! Congratulations to Matthew Rozell- what a fabulous teacher- I enjoyed every page of this book! My dad is a WWll vet- still going strong at 91 (Battle of the Bulge survivor)- I am going to recommend it to him! Thanks!

Excellent work..My father was a Marine in WW2 , and mentioned some of the islands over the years that he was on, but would not talk about it at all , this book revealed a lot of history on what they went through... Looking forward to the next book...Thank You for a Great read!

For me, having so many voices speaking in the first person made the book read easier. Like the Bible, it is a compilation more than a single book and so many perspectives added color. I was sorry to reach the end, and that is a rarity
