Great lessons to be learned from Mark's anecdotes of his lifelong experience of working with horses. He is not only a great horseman that truly understands animal psychology, but also a gifted writer that captivates his audience with often humorous accounts of lessons he learned through interactions with both horses and people. I can truly relate to his passive style of gaining a horse's confidence, as I acquired a rescue horse that feared everyone and everything, and using a similar approach I have not only gained this horse's trust, but have forged a strong bond that is impossible to describe in words.

A good read that made me think about leadership a little differently. I found his take on herd leadership very interesting when comparing leaders that the herd is afraid of versus leaders that the herd wants to follow and be with. Some good insight given from his experiences with horses. A worthwhile read and I think all levels of horse lovers could learn something from this book.

Mark was concerned about the label of 'passive leadership' being misinterpreted. A better term might be Anchor Horse. Irrespective of the label (again) there is lots of great information in this book.

I had great difficulty putting this book down. The personal stories Mark writes about pulls you right in. And I finally understood how to be
quiet and find the slightest try. It just clicked with me. I highly
recommend this book and can't wait to read his others!

This book will open your eyes and help you understand how horses think. If you are looking for an exact how-to guide, this is not the book but is nevertheless a wonderful and informative read and a beautiful story. Mark Rashid has become one of my favorite trainers and has helped my relationship with my horses tremendously.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had some real good examples of good horsemanship with out forcing training methods down your throat. You take from this book what you want and at the same time enjoy some good reading & good stories. It also gives you training ideas that are so easy and practical. Recommend reading.

I really enjoyed this book. Aside from being rather entertaining, I thought it had really valuable lessons on how to be open to the nuances of how horses communicate. I am currently having a lot of trouble with one of my horses and can totally relate to clients who had stories of how their horses were written off by trainers. There is a lot of insight on herd dynamics and learning how to see the world from the horse's point of view. I especially like Mark's counter argument for making yourself the so-called alpha horse. I agree that it's all fine if you want to dominate your horse, I'm looking for a partner and am more interested on how to build a relationship that puts my horse at ease and I found a lot of guidance here on how to take that path. Don't get me wrong, this is not a cookbook on how to fix your problem horse. There are no lesson plans, methods or tricks - it is just a lot of wisdom, observation and suggestion on what else could possibly cause your horse to not cooperate as you expect. If you are willing to listen, then I believe this is a great start to put a rider in his or her right frame of mind to go to the next level of horsemanship and allow your horse a voice in how you go about it. Also, I think the lessons in this book perfectly transfer to relationships with people and valuable lessons on leadership in a corporate setting. It'a all about being self aware, how to focus and truly listen and practice that art of silent communication.

I love this book. I highly recommend it. The book is easy to read and the author tells wonderful stories that supports his equine theories in such a way that makes sense. The author gives much insight in to herd mentality from the horses view.

I've read most of the "natural horsemanship" literature, and this book adds another dimension to my understanding. Reading it was like being in the company of this gentle man who has a true heart for horses. Rashid sees horses as individuals, and he teaches his readers to do the same. I will reread it more than once, I am sure. Highly recommended!

Mark Rashid offers great insight to the way horses respond to other horses and humans. This man has spent years observing horse behavior and you will be surprised to know what kind of leadership horses really desire.

The book is big and heavy and looks impressive. But . . . the print is big and widely spaced and Rashid has little to say aside from some hokey anecdotes. He is apparently stretching what he knows into a large number of books instead of consolidating it into one book, where it would probably fit.

The book, as stated on the invoice, was used but was to appear essentialy "clean and near new". Not so! There were dirty smudges, two underlined pages and a dogearred page. I was disappointed that it was not as advertised.

This book is indispensable for anyone who works with or just loves horses. Rashid delivers a different, but nonetheless compelling reason to put down the sticks, whips and whatever "tools" they have and think differently about what they need to do and why. He offers thoughts on issues such as submission vs a willing partnership and not in some new age way. It is practical, purposeful and chock full of common sense. If you think this is a book eschewing other methods, it is not- far from it. It does allow you to see things perhaps from an unfamiliar viewpoint than you have before and will open up better communication with your horse no matter your skill level. Rashid's ever inquisitive mind and easy going nature is a good foundation for getting his point of view across. I am so happy I found this author and am busy devouring every book he has written.
