A believable alternate history and compelling characters that I could see in my head made this a great read. The stark reality of realized racism informed the entire book and made it hard to come back to the present.

This is a horrific view into an America that could have been, and I appreciated the way that world was portrayed, as a USA that couldn't get along with the rest of the world and suffered economically as a result. The plot has a few great twists in it.

Great read. The US resolves the slavery issue by allowing four states to be slave holding....skip into the future with the narrator, a micro chipped 'soul catcher' who works in the system and dares to try to save his own soul. Futuristic spy story, twists and turns, just plausible enough to send chills down your back.

Awesome book, well written, intriguing story line, conflicted characters...you were pulled in from the start, did not disappoint. As outlandish as it seems, the world was crafted such that I believed it could happen, modern day slavery.

One surprise after another, some more satisfying than the one before. One relationship after another, some more satisfying than others. One agent after another, a little like the rings of hell, but this book had none of the poetry or genuine dimension of a book like "All the Light You Cannot See" or "The Portable Veblen," both of which deal with subterfuge and a world where domination and greed play mammoth roles. Was there ANY humor? I missed it.
Certainly it points to some potentially horrific developments in our technical world and makes pertinent, insightful, and critical comments about the injustice and prejudice in America today.

This book was a compelling page turner. I found myself thinking about it long after idea finished it. It used the traditions of a detective story combined an alternative history. The only book I can compare it to is The Handmaid's Tale.

An excellent and provocative book, especially so as I read it at the same time I was watching The Man In The High Castle, just two weeks before the unfortunate inauguration of Der Donald. I feel as if my life is fully in alternate histories.

The novel was well written. Mr. Winters made this world disturbingly plausible, showing how slavery might have evolved and survived into the 21st century. His take on the Gulf War was quite a surprise.

Bought many books from the store. My first review. Personally, I give the intent (?) by the author, a plus. The laudatory comments on the book cover were overly generous. "Thriller?" No. I must give credit for trying to walk in another's shoes, but this attempt came up a bit short for me.

Courageous writing on a possible alternative outcome to the mid-1800s in the US in regards to slavery had Lincoln not been President. Reminds us perhaps in regards to the current political climate how Presidential/Congressional decisions have far reaching effects on future generations.

The premise was really interesting but I never really cared about the participants. I will admit I stopped reading at a bit over the halfway point. Nothing happens and the writing just plods along. Many other excellent books about African-American experience out now; this alternative history is not one of them.

I enjoy alternate histories and speculating on what might have happened had things gone differently. This book was not a disappointment. It's well written and held my interest through the septa crisis of 2016.

First three or four chapters seemed mixed with no direction. In some cases, it was hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys, which can be good in some cases, but in this case, seemed confused to me. Otherwise, good luck and much success to the author.

interesting premise. Enjoyed the story. A few times it seems the protagonist escapes from seemingly impossible dilemmas in ways that are a little too convenient.
But...I stayed up nights reading it, so I think the author did his job!!

Super interesting noir thriller about an alternative reality for the us. Sort of a thought experiment about an America that still had institutionalize slavery. Fascinating read and suspenseful story.
