The first few paragraphs I could not understand why the Division of the person who was speaking. Then two main characters joined forces. At that point it made some sense. Then it got even better. Then it. Got Amazing.

Pure escapism. This is a science fiction fantasy reminiscent of one of Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs". Hero gets the girl, bad guys are defeated (for now), two totally foreign cultures are brought together, in a fast moving fun story. It's a great trip just to get away.

I began reading this book knowing that it would be a strange tale, but the story I wound up reading wasn't at all the one I imagined. The Galactic Mage is a long book (the price is very low for such length) and for the first half of the book I had no idea how the two seemingly separate storylines would meet. At times it seemed like they never would, but I pressed on and knowing all of the differing histories really did make a huge difference. It was very enjoyable to read and I believe it would appeal to fans of fantasy as much as, if not more than, fans of science fiction.

Novels might focus on plot, setting, characters or the psychology that motivates them, but in "The Galactic Mage," author John Daulton gives the reader all of them. And he does it skillfully from two different worlds explored through two different genres: Fantasy and Science Fiction.

The story riffs on the "Common Man as Hero theme." Altin Meade--from the fantasy world--is a wizard, sure, but a lowly one with the ability of only a Six. Sixes have the unpleasant habit of dying in magic mishaps. Altin's predecessor's misfortunes are described hilarious fashion, and this tips the reader early to the occasional humor sprinkled throughout like so many sugar candies .

Ensign Orli Pewter--from the Science Fiction world--was born on a spaceship and is committed (she would say 'condemned') to live aboard ship until her late 20s, when the spaceship is scheduled to return to Earth. She is but a mere botanist, a skill that will become quite useful later in the story, but her true calling as a leader will also emerge.

Daultin's skillful prose paints a full picture of not only physical details, but intricacies of emotion and behavior. The writing is rich with subtle observations that lend texture and realism throughout the book. I most definitely recommend, "The Galactic Mage."

I loved reading about the depiction of the two worlds. In particular, I loved the descriptions of the planet Prosperion. The combining of science fiction and fantasy worked like a charm. The characters grabbed me immediately. Atlin was a joy to read about. His power of teleportation particularly intrigued. The best part was that this was a fun and easy read that captured my attention. Very entertaining! I am waiting anxiously for the sequel.

Very nice work. Very enjoyable and as other reviewers have said, wishing to have more of it. There are a lot of things to be explained like the origins of the Hostiles and what is going to happen next. So a sequel is required...

Mr Daulton has crafted a very rich universe with magic and technology co-existing, not easy to do. A little slow in spots, no that isn't right. It was meticously detailed with excellent character development and evocative imagery establishing a solid foundation for the readers to "see" Altin's and Orli's plight. To experience their frustrations and successes. I can't wait for the sequel, there will be a sequel, right? My divination isn't working. Read the book, well worth the monetary and time investment. Excellent first novel!

Not what I was expecting. Its two entirely different books until the point they meet, very clever. Good writing style, good dialog, and good characters, except for one. A pet peeve of mine if you will. Impulsive, overly emotional, trigger happy Captains do not exist. They are heavily screened just to weed out those types, in the past, present, and future. A convenience for the story to be sure, but an irritation to me none the less. A good read, more fantasy than sci-fi, but an enjoyable book.

Interesting tale of fantasy meets tech. More than a few characters within both realms, evolve and become part of the storyline with enough complexity and color to stand out in their own tales, while creating enough excitement to wonder what is in store as this adventure continues to unfold.....

This is a book that I found highly intriguing. It has a neat merging between fantasy and sci-fi that I've never really seen before. The principles of physics are discovered from a whole new point of few which makes for an interesting read. It's not the best book I've ever read, but I was drawn in and definitely enjoyed the book.

Pretty good book; fun and easy to read. Draws you in almost right from the start and keeps you interested. The author came up with a very interesting Universe for the story ... I hope there is a sequel.

Solid first book. It was an interesting concept of tech and magic. It took quite a while for the story to come together, then it ended almost abruptly. We will have to see if the following books can hold interest.

Aside from the saccharin ending, I loved every second of this book. There haven't been many books lately that I've read that have fully grasped my attention, but this was one. How can you go wrong with space exploration, sci-fi, fantasy, and magic all in the same book?

Really enjoyed this book.....looking forward to sequel. Well worth the money, you will not be disappointed. This story takes a unique view - a medieval planet discovers space travel via 'magic' and encounters a fleet from earth. High tech and 'magic' creates conflicts yet both need each other to survive.

The combining of space travel and Mage craft makes this a TRUE Science Fiction Fantasy novel. Although the first part of the book seems a little drawn out, the last half seems to make-up for it. I hope there is a sequel so that I can again witness the effective merger of science fiction and fantasy.

The way that John Daulton could explain very clearly both sides of Magic and Science and interweave them was lovely to read. Humour , personal relationships, all the sides of humanity made it a book that I read and couldn't put down. I have read both the Mage books,WHERE IS THE NEXT ONE! Thankyou John.

I really liked this book, though at times the characters actions did not make sense- for example, with ships exploding all around them, Orli never thinks about how her father may have died. Logically, you would think that would occur to her. However, the book in general is quite good.

Only just predictable enough to barely miss a 5th star. Plenty of interesting characters and potential to keep interest past the 2nd book....most innovative mix of magic and technology I've seen in a good while.
