Reads like your favorite spy thriller, but ends like a horror story. I can't imagine the courage it took for Mr. Carroll to gather the hard evidence and compelling interviews that make up this first-rate documentary.

You don't have to be a Lyme disease sufferer (as I am) to be enthralled with this book. It is my dearest wish that it will inspire others to discover the truth about Plum Island and hopefully a cure someday.

Thank you Mr Carroll for your extensive research and very well written book. I love our government but as responsible citizens, we need to know that truth so that we can learn from our mistakes and hopefully correct the situation, if that is still possible. This is indeed a disturbing tale from start to finish. I could hardly put the book down. Thank you for bringing this information to light. I hope it becomes common knowledge to the American people and creates a National outcry. It seems that only then will those in power begin the arduous task of recognizing and treating the many victims of this unintended but horrific "perfect storm" of secrecy, mismanagment and biowarfare. I am going to buy a few more copies of this book and give them to my friends.

Very interesting read. I had no idea this ****** island and the idiots aboard were responsible for West Nile here in the States. Nice job. Really makes you think twice about their vaccination recommendations. The book tells of yet another case where they accidentally mixed live virus within one.

The subject matter is absolutely fascinating. However, the book was not at all engaging. I found myself skipping through large sections and eventually abandoning the book altogether. Where Richard Preston or Marilyn McKenna bring the biology of viruses alive, Carroll's focus was more political, and for me, way too dry.

A fascinating look at some of the deadly and careless ways our government treats some of the most dangerous viruses known to man, when left alone on an island. You will not want a government Bio-3 lab anywhere near you after reading this book, not that being close matters with the stuff they work on. If you like Keystone comedies with tragic results and potentials, this is the one for you. I have been to the Plum Island Animal Research Facility on a tour, and this author was able to mentally transport me back again, which made me wonder, had I brought away from this place possibly more then just another experience. Time will tell.

I was referred to this book by someone whose granddaughter was diagnosed with Lyme Disease - and then later was told it was "all in her head". She continued to get worse and came very close to dying; all but one of their doctors tried to keep the family from seeking help for her - as though they were covering up her real problem! After reading this book, it's easy to see that many people in our government do NOT want us to know what is going on within the confines of Plum Island's labs.

The book arrived in excellent condition and is well worth every penny spent to purchase it. EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. You NEED to know the truth about what is causing various sicknesses and ailments among the people and why. The implications of this book are more far reaching today than when it was written. It is especially pertinent to the current problem of EBOLA. For a connection, read the Hot Zone. We NEED to be informed!

Plum island has been an ongoing nightmare as revealed by this author. Now, the powers that be would build a replacement in the middle of cattle country. This book reads like horror fiction. There is no other exposé of Plum Island that I know of that provides such a powerful, frightening window into the evil of that place....we don't need another one.

Very interesting and relevant information but, the author injects too much speculation, conjecture and often is repetitive in attempting to force his points about one of the mysteries perpetrated by our government. It's unfortunate that the majority of information is derived from anecdotal accounts by former staffers at Plumb Island. The subject matter was fairly proposed.

This is a good place to start in understanding why Lyme and the Lyme co-infections are epidemic on planet earth today in 2016 and why their existence as "chronic lyme" is being denied by those who know the origins and biological science. Was it negligence or something more?

This was a great book that should horrify everyone. I wish there was an updated addition. My only complaint is the timelines bounce around a little bit while following the individual threads of this history.

Well researched, and interesting info and history about the island, and how it formed, and all the mistakes that were made there (there were many.) If you didn't know where the awful epidemic Lyme's disease came from, sadly you do know now. The scariest part is when the hurricane hits and the power goes down, and there is only a few employees to tend to the biological sewage overflowing around them.

The author tends to assume causality when co-incidence might be explored more carefully. Hypotheses and stories that provide that basis for the hypotheses are not quite the same of the evidence. For an interesting parallel read about "trial by advocates in the news, etc" get "The Panic Virus".

Both books open mind to basically educated average man about criminality dishonesty and utter disrespect for existence of fellow humans. Would they be Americans or Russians It is brilliant work which should by in every school library in USA an Russia and any other country which plays "games" with this criminal activity

Since the Federal Government is looking at my hometown as a site for another biolab like this one, it made me afraid...very afraid! It details how lax and dysfunctional the government is because the process is so politicized.

VERY DISTURBING INFORMATION, BUT VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE KNOW WHAT OUR GOVERNMENT IS UP TO IN REGARDS TO CREATING AND TESTING/DISTRIBUTING BIOLOGICAL WARFARE. MANY HAVE BEEN SICKENED AND MANY HAVE DIED BECAUSE OF THIS SECRET TESTING!!!

After just one chapter, this book has the odor of conspiracy theory wafting off of it. An extra bit of research confirmed my suspicion. The book is full of half truths and maybe/could have statements that seem to pass as evidence. Skip this book if you want a serious book

Carroll has done his homework - he documents all the chilling incidents in the history of this "lab of terror." His speculations on the origins of Lyme Disease are thought-provoking, too. A good read with a lot of detail.

The operative word here is "disturbing." In this book, a journalist makes his case that the Plum Island (New York) germ laboratory has been responsible for outbreaks of everything from Lyme Disease to West Nile Disease.Writer Carroll has an axe to grind and he’s none too subtle about presenting his case. His breathless prose reminds us of muckraking books from an earlier era, and it’s almost nostalgic seeing the way he condemns the various bad guys in the saga. But just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you and in fact, the story he has to tell is pretty frightening.

Having contracted Lyme Disease in 1993 and since run the gauntlet of symptoms and disinformation that have come to
characterize the most political illness of the 20TH and thus far 21ST century, I have spent decades educating the public
in regard to the absolute horrors of this biological weapon; and the American medical community's attempts to conceal
Lyme Disease's biological weapons' roots, as they continue to destroy the careers of any American physician who
not only knows that Lyme Disease is a bio-weapon, but also attempts to treat chronically ill Lyme Disease patients
who were never properly diagnosed by other physicians.

Author Carroll does a superlative job of exposing this government cover up, which in reality is just the tip of the proverbial
iceberg, regarding how the hierarchy of the U.S. Military Industrial Intelligence complex secretly implements what can only be described as Project Paperclip/Nazi idealized protocols in the United States. And the ways in which this complex uses
an unwitting American public for non consensual human experimentation.

The Pentagon's electromagnetic warfare program is even more horrific since it operates by way of the electromagnetic
spectrum and tracks the human body by way of its own unique electromagnetic signatures. This is truly a horror that
is unprecedented, in that this Orwellian technology allows those who secretly utilize it to experiment upon, torture and
even murder American citizens with plausible deniability!

If you enjoy reading intriguing, scary investigative books about government secrets, government screw-ups and their associated cover-ups, Lab 257 is for you. Michael C. Carroll's book about the US government's biological research lab on Plum Island in Long Island Sound is a disturbingly pleasurable read. Like some of the critics of this book, I was raised in the Long Island area where Plum Island was more of an open secret than the super-secret facility suggested by this book. The eastern end of Long Island Sound is home to several "research islands" among other old military bases and government facilities from Napatree Point to Montauk. I remember as a child cruising in my father's boat near Plum Island and seeing the "Animal Disease" Bio-hazard warning signs. And as a USDA operation in its later incarnations, Plum Island was less sinister than this book would lead you to believe. But the storyline about the facility's structural problems and poor maintenance rings true to anyone who has ever worked in an old Cold War era defense facility. Always frightening. The theory about Lyme Disease ticks escaping Plum Island on the backs of waterfowl and deer to infest the Connecticut shoreline is a well-known local theory (and a plausible one given the facility's research focus and spotty maintenance in the early 70s when the first outbreak occurred). Students of conspiracy will love this book -- and knowingly nod when they recognize the early Cold War "logic" that led the US government to secretly test and store biological agents on a little known island in the middle of one of the most densely populated and trafficked areas in the US. Lab 257 is a good read; well written and compelling. Recommended.

Being an avid Bio-Thriller reader, I’ve known of or heard about Plum Island in numerous books. Lab 257 is a story about this island and the things that have (or may have) come from it. Michael C. Carroll spent years researching the history and speaking to people who were connected to Plum Island (and Lab 257) in some way, shape, or form to bring this book to life.

I’m not always a non-fiction fan. Some non-fiction books read like a story (Richard Preston) while others read like a school book that you just can’t get into. Lab 257 is a combination of both. Carroll is able to bring to life stories that were absolutely fascinating in one step and then bring me down a bit in another.

If I wasn’t a fan of books written about this subject I would steer clear of this because there is a lot going on in here that will just scare the living crap out of most people. Not because it’s meant to jump scare you, but because the things that Carroll describes are real. There are real bio-agents out there that can do incredibly disgusting things to a human body.

I’m not sure what Carroll hoped to bring to light with this book, but I felt like it was more information about a secret lab and maybe bring more investigation into Plum Island. I’m not 100% sure, but the book was a mix of really interesting stories and some more fact-based boring accounts and science.
