Preston is a genius when it comes to his writing. The demon in the freezer is extremely thought-provoking. Is one of those books that puts you on the edge of your seat and it is one you want to share with your friends. It would be awesome for book club.

I am currently reading this now and it is extremely good. Very hard to put down. Just like "The Hot Zone" you could easily stay up all night reading it. This will be a book in my permanent collection.

Highly readable. A chilling account of how smallpox kills, how quickly it spreads, and why it still exists, thirty years after being eradicated. The World Health Assembly just voted to keep the smallpox virus around until at least 2012--thanks to pressure from the U.S.! A must read.

This book was recommended to me by a fellow scientist. Normally I wouldn't go for this kind of reading but in this case I did, and I didn't regret it.
If you're interested in virology, mixed in with a little biochemistry and some thriller scenes, then this book is for you. No boring science here...
The time line in the book is a little bit jumpy, location wise the same thing. But once you get the hang of it, this book reads so smoothly.
The science mentioned in the book is sound and the information mentioned well researched.

Most of the time truth is stranger (and more interesting) than fiction. Preston details the research going on in the world of biological warfare and outlines how heroic men and women are finding ways to prevent outbreaks of disease.

I think this book completes my curiosity about biological wafare agent. I has known it very at shallow level because I couldn't experience it anywhere except text book. I believe this book could be a great guidance to whom fights the bioterrorism and biological war.

After reading The Hot Zone, picking up this book was a no-brainer. I finished this in less than a day. Richard Preston's writing is suspenseful and will keep your heart pounding.
Unfortunately, I didn't learn my lesson after reading The Hot Zone while on a flight. I read The Demon in the Freezer while flying as well. Every sneeze, every cough, every yawn made me suspicious of other travelers while I was reading this! :)

Having read the hot zone earlier, Richard Preston knows bio warfare's ins and outs. This novel stays to the truth in it's content. The question I see is if this really happened, would it really take that long or would it go much faster?

very easy to follow the science behind the story. it really gives the reader a better sense of how dangerous a state we are living in this world. I recommend this to anyone in Law enforcement with interest in bio attacks.

I'm a PhD candidate studying inflammation and this book kept me interested from open to close. It's an inspiring read that's made me yearn to have had a role in the Eradication of smallpox. Great explanations of scientific terminology for the lay reader without losing the technical correctness. Highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mr. Preston's latest book, and I finished it in less than a week's time which is saying something for a person with my schedule. Mr. Preston, as always, does an incredible job of captivating the reader as he recounts tales from the world of dark biology. Due to the current world situation, his information about smallpox is extremely valuable, and should help convince the few stalwarts left in America who mistakenly believe that Iraq does not have biological weapons. "Demon in the Freezer" is perhaps this year's best horror non-fiction title; you WILL have to read it with the light on. As a supplemental read, be sure to pick up Dr. Ken Alibek's book, "Biohazard."

Best science book ever! Takes you into a world you may think you know and shows you what reality really is. Your interest is kept with the simple explanations and the general great story telling of actual facts. A must read for the modern world.

Incredible, informative, heart wrenching and terrifying. To learn about the devastating effects that a simple virus could have on all of humanity is quite a wake up call. I sincerely hope the threat of a global pandemic is enough to deter even the most extreme terrorist nation from ever resorting to biological warfare.

As a retired medical professional, I've long suspected that the major threat to humanity are not atomic weapons but micro-organisms. The sheer number of incidents Preston documents will make any reader old enough to have a smallpox scar recognize that it's not unthinkable that we could easily have a "pox upon us."

I love Preston's research and coverage of horrific events. I read him initially in The Hot Zone, which I still think was wonderful. He has a grasp of science that wouldn't put a non-science reader off. I happen to be a scientist and a lawyer. I like his work.

I really liked the story and the information in this book. I love reading about various diseases, and this book had information about several. It is an interesting story, however, some of the information in there is very thought provoking, in that this could happen at any time and our country is not prepared for this.

Very, Very, Very good! This was recommend in a Teacher Education Seminar that I attend this summer as the one to read for a good "Biology" summer reading.
Everyone should take the time to check this one out. The story just grabs you and I couldn't put it down until finished.
Great research and very informational.
After it's read, you will realize, your just one good "sniff" away from turning into a "Blister".
My Grandfather born in 1891 had smallpox as a child, in fact all of his siblings did. (6) Total. All survived, all were scared but all lived. He as 1/2 Choctaw but being exposed to the farm animals in a rural setting must haved allowed the family genes to cope with the disease.

Captivating and authoritative. Relevant to the lives we live everyday and will take your sense of security away forever. I enjoy his writing, the seeming thoroughness of his research and his access to what really goes on in the world of potentially lethal microbes. I am a Richard Preston fan and this is a good one.

This is an intensely frightening account of the possibility of biowarfare using genetically engineered smallpox and anthrax. It is also an engaging history of the effort to eliminate smallpox in the natural world.

This book is excellent. Having read Preston's work before I expected a concise, clear story and it delivered. You really feel every moment of this book and may even find your palms sweating just thinking about the situation at hand. If you have any interest (or fear) in bio-terrorism or infectious diseases this is a must read.
