It should practically be monitored like the Anarchist Cookbook. Phenomenal read for the budding environmentalist though, really puts things in perspective. Personally I loved the bits about burning down billboards. I suppose this book push your brain a little closer to the fringe, but you'll be better for it. I promise.

Experience a new outlaw justice in this classic Abbey work. Although you may groan at the sometime sophomoric humor, the storytelling outs and the environmental questions are worth considering, even when voiced by terrorists.

This most excellent book brings back memories of my trips to these beautiful lands. Even though most folks don't cotton to Mr. Abbey's beliefs, his descriptive prose is a marvel to behold! The awe inspiring sunsets, the fragile, defenseless creatures of this forsaken wilderness, the beauty that once was is there for anyone to experience.

Hard to overstate how important this was when it first came out - essentially a pean to eco-terrorism that mobilized and energized many. Mostly, however, it is a love story with the object of desire being the southwest, specifically red rock country in Utah, Nevada and Arizona. Downsides: Sexism, fairly intolerable casual racism towards native Americans, and a writing style that veers toward pulp at times. His best known work, but not his best work (Desert Solitaire, a non-fiction,does much better.) Read it for its historical importance and if you love red rock country, its part of the lore.

Set in my favorite area, the southwest desert, the book's characters come to life under the artful words of Edward Abbey. These people are fully committed to saving this beautiful land. The book has it all adventure, suspense, love triangles and it draws you into cheering for the group of underdogs trying to save the last remains of true wilderness.

The Monkey Wrench Gang was very entertaining. The characters are all strong, although slightly looney and although slightly looney, you can't help but hope that they come through unscathed. The descriptive country side makes you believe that you are actually there.

Abbey was a crumudgeon and a contradiction. What is most important is that he loved the West passionately. This piece is where everyone should start and practically every American should be required to read this book.

Irreverent, illegal, profane and rowdy adventure in the great American West. Excellent descriptions of the majesty of the Utah desert country around the upper Colorado River. Reading is almost like being there on a rafting trip through Cataract Canyon.

I am certainly an environmentalist but this book is a bit silly. I am not sure how Abbey was thought to be leader of any movement based on this book. The characters are cartoonish and Abbey is a misogynist. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
