I liked that I had something new and different to envision; however, I felt the gods were not powerful enough. They reminded me of the Greek and Roman gods with the plurality of gods and human emotions. The storyline was original and I certainly could not foretell what would happen.

Seriously, this author is a goddess. I love her writing style and storylines so freaking much. She's honestly at the top of my list of favorite authors. I'm not going to go on about why this book was great because, honestly, I hate writing reviews. Just know that it's a great read and I've enjoyed every page.

What begins as a mystery story turns into a powerful character study. This is an absolute page-turner, a book I finished in two sittings. The character of Sieh, a favorite from the first book, is further fleshed out, and new godlings are introduced to the mix. Once again Jemisin manages to address romance in a way that is never overwrought or unrealistic; it never smothers the plot under saccharine, gimmicky hookups or pining. The nature of light, truth, and justice feature heavily, in an interesting contrast to the first book's focus on Nahadoth's darkness. The world building continues to impress. A fascinating read, and a wonderful setup to the next entry in this series.

This is my first N.K. Jemisin book. I accidentally read this one before the first of the Inheritance Trilogy...but it wasn't a problem. the book stands alone fine. It was a great introduction to the author's books. I liked this book so much that I continued to read other books she's read.

The standard fantasy formula would get old one might think, and yet some authors can put their own unique spin on it and still create very entertaining stories in my humble opinion. This trilogy is a fine example of just that. Off hand I can't think of one aspect of this trilogy that I have not already encountered in other stories and yet I can't wait to start the final book.

This book was amazing. The main character was strong, funny and independent despite of the many difficulties in her life. It was also a story about love and mourning, which made it special in that adult way in which pleasure and pain exist simultaneously. Worth your time!

All 3 books were amazingly well written. The author has created such a rich world of fantasy and her characters are beautifully real and human and NOT human. Now that I have finished the trilogy I can not wait to read her next book. What an imagination this woman has. I highly recommend her books to anyone with an imagination.

While this book is clearly located in the fantasy genre, it manages to leap clear from it. Jemisin has continued the imaginative work of the first novel and taken it in new directions. Like the first it is also relatively self contained. I loved that leap from the norm and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Special mention goes to her writing about writing at the end, something I wish was more common.

After greatly enjoying the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, I was delighted to discover a sequel, and it is one that does not disappoint. If anything, I like it better. The Broken Kingdoms fleshes out aspects from the first book, such the godlings, and Itempas. It also has an incredibly enjoyable protagonist in blind artist Oree. Of the three books, this may very well be my favorite, though I greatly enjoyed them all.

Having been reading fantasy, scifi and horror books for such a long time, it takes something special to get through my jaded instincts and go, wow, yes, this is what brought me into the genre in the first place. The Broken Kingdoms is just such a book. I read it almost in one sitting over a weekend, and now intend to track down the rest of the author's works.
Brilliant, original work!

The hundred thousand kingdoms was an excellent fantasy novel. It was a fantasy novel that also included romance in it. However, the broken kingdoms was the typical romance novel disguised as a fantasy novel that one tends to expect from female fantasy authors. The change was quite disappointing to me. The protagonist was not as compelling as Yeine, although Yeine wasn't THAT compelling. I'd like to see a strong heroine in the third book of the trilogy. I'd also like the story to branch out further than focusing almost entirely on romance. It wasn't a bad book, but the author's style changed significantly to something more typical and to be expected.

I ordered this because the concept looked interesting and it had received a number of good reviews. It was a mistake. The book is poorly written and I would recommend skipping it. I will not be buying any further books by this author.
