I really enjoyed this latest Maiden Lane story. I like how Hoyt is weaving these stories together through the Home and the exploits of the Ghost rather than the usual sibling connections. This might be one of my favorites of the series simply because it was so upbeat. There was not any contrived drama or misunderstandings. It was refreshing. Megs and Godric are both likeable and their relationship seemed fairly realistic. I would definitely recommend this book as a happy escape.

4.5 stars - another keeper from Elizabeth Hoyt in the Maiden Lane series. This series should be read in order to fully enjoy the stories. I will be sad when the tales of the Ghost(s) of St Giles ends. Ms. Hoyt creates a world of such wonderfully interesting characters, that you care about what happens to even the secondary or background people. That very efficient but young housekeeper must have a fascinating story, and I want to know what happens to young Alf.

Lord of Darness explores grief and it's sometimes long grip on two people's emotions. Godric St. John and his blackmail bride, Megs, have both lost the love of their lives. Yet life goes on and the human sprit re-awakens whether they want it or not, and love is not something, once had, to be lost forever I recommend reading the Maiden lane series from first to the last installment of Lord of Darkness, as the prior books set the scene and introduce the characters of Lord of Darkness and what has shaped their past inorder to understand Megs and Godric's present. Elizabeth Hoyt is one of my favorite authors and I can't wait for Duke of Midnight in October!

From the very first Maiden Lane series, I have been addicted to these wonderful characters. I love their names, I love how characters I have loved in other books are woven in now and again, I love the tug and pull of the love hate relationships, I love the unusual characters like no other books, and I love the intrigue and misunderstandings. I can't wait to continue this saga! Please, more! more! more!

Love that the author pulls you into this time and in London with all of her characters in this series. It keeps you wondering what will happen in the next book. Maiden Lane series I recommend too those who love period books with Acton, adventure, love and the unexpected.

Another "Maiden Lane" gem. Loved this story of loss, growth and renewed openness to life and love. This ghost of St Giles was broken, but saved by first, caring for the less fortunate (even if done recklessly) and second by allowing himself to be open to love again. Good read.

This is a fantastic read. Elizabeth Hoyt is an amazing author and this series is, quite simply, incredible. Truly amazing. The books seem to get better and better. I cannot wait to read where The Ghost will turn up next. Sigh. If you haven't read the Maiden Lane series yet... DO IT NOW!
While they can be read as stand alones, they are all wonderful and I would recommend reading them in order.

Delightful! Makes me want to visit 1700's England. A brooding, determined hero, a courageous heroine thrust into a life when she deserves so much more. An unlikely pairing that turns into a perfect match. Hooray to Hoyt for her wonderful storytelling, not a cliché or predictability in sight!

I'm a recent convert to the historical romance. I'm just getting to know the authors etc. I have to say from everything I've read so far, her books have the most humor. A really great, funny read.

Oh and the romance bit - toe curling.

I could do with a little less of the sub plots (solving whatever mystery) so there is more romance and humor, but that's just my opinion.

All in all a great book to lose yourself in.

I have just written a few reviews criticizing plot devices as not being believable. I don't know why, then, I really like the Maiden Lane series, but I do. The premise of these books is not very believable at all - sort of like Batman in early 19th century London. But, even so, Elizabeth Hoyt manages to make me care about the characters and love the romance. She does it again in this book.

Elizabeth Hoyt's Duke of Midnight is a grand slam in a series of winners. She continues to develop her Maiden Lane characters in such a way that you don't want the book to end. Artemis is an amazing hero--unique, strong, resourceful, intelligent. Maximus, the hero, has met his match and mate. Their love story is compelling. What I love about Hoyt's books is how she develops all her characters, both major and minor, to give you the feeling that you are a part of that world. It makes for engaging reading. I cannot wait to read what she writes next.

I have really enjoyed this series, but Have balked at the cost of electronic versions. I bit the bullet and bought them-but I stop here because I refuse to pay $8 for an electronic version for an "older" book; the paperback is only $5. The paperback requires typesetting, burning plates, and printing on paper. The electronic costs zero zip nada. Come on the store or author or whomever sets the prices- I'll go get the next book in the series at a second hand store for $.50.

Next to Mickey and Silence this is the best Maiden Lane ever! I love how strong she made Artemis, so often the female romantic lead starts strong but ends up wishy washy Artemis stays strong throughout the entire book. I loved the twist at the end I did not see that coming, also that selfish, vain ninny Penelope got her comeuppance, yippee.

Absolutely wonderful addition to the amazing Maiden Lane series! The pacing was well done with action, humor, heat and a good deal of heart (the kind that tugs at your heartstrings and the kind that makes your heart melt). The epilogue left me very anxious to see what is next and who will be featured! Well done Ms Hoyt!

Another fantastic entry in the series! I just loved this one. The characters were great and the story built upon earlier books but still works as a stand alone. The only negative is the Duke's reluctance to switch his choice of bride. It came across as a rather flimsy impediment and dragged on too long. I am curious about the next installment already.

Elizabeth Hoyt is such a great writer, and I love this series. This book can stand alone, but it's so much better if you start the series in order and go on from there. I recommend this book to any fan of historical romance.

Elizabeth Hoyt is an amazing writer. I have loved all of her books...especially the Prince Trilogy. Of the Maiden Lane series, this is my favorite so far. I can't wait to see which character will be the focus of her next book ...Phoebe ...Apollo??? Hate to have to wait until the next one comes out.

Again, Elizabeth Hoyt captured and held my attention from the first line. This series keeps me up late into the night. I'm a logical person and yet I seem to believe that I will miss something if I put one these novels down! Please keep the novels coming just like the others!

This was my first book dated in the centuries past. At first I wasn't interested, but it had great reviews of some respectable book readers online. So I purchased and fell head over heals in awe of the Duke and Diana. I will be reading the other Maiden Lane novels in hopes to be as satisfied.

I really enjoy the Maiden Lane series and after Thief of Shadows and Lord of Darkness; I think my expectations were too high. Don't get me wrong though, I still enjoyed the book. He was very much like Batman. I think they got close too quickly, I wanted a bit more between them before they went to the next level; maybe it's just me. I think I was expecting something a bit different. I still liked Artemis and the duke. I would reread this book again and I definitely look forward to a possible new book in the series! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys mystery and romance.

I love Maiden Lane and all the wonderful people who live there. I hope Asa's story gets told soon and I really hope he ends up with Penelope because that would make me laugh and now that I have read this story it would almost make sense that those two end up together. Great story, 2nd only to Silence's story.

Now first things first.
I did really enjoy reading this ebook.
This author's entire Maiden Lane series has been quite entertaining for me.

The only reason I did not give this book a 5 star review was because I felt like the chemistry between the two main characters lacked some passion.
That as well as the female character just seem too meek and weepy to me.

I was a little concerned through two chapters, then it picks up and takes off! The Maiden Lane series is fantastic and not one has been a disappointment, unlike some other series that get weaker as they go along. Hoyt just writes a great historical romance. They feel authentic and well deliberated. Can not wait to read the next one!

Honestly, I wish hadn't finished it. Maximus was fantastic, one of my more favorites hero's in a long time. The book was well-timed and paced. I never got bored and I really liked that everyone stayed in their characters. Can't wait for the next one.

Love her romances and this one delivers splendidly. British historical romance with intrigue and mystery. Fun and sexy and sweet with great dialogue. Hoyt never disappoints.
Warning: premarital sex with details. Profanity and mild vulgarity.

I love Elizabeth Hoyt's Maiden Lane Series. I find it very original, with rich characters, and great plots. She's created a whole world in and around St. Giles and London with a history of recurring characters. I feel as though I'm there when I read her books, they are that great!

Elizabeth Hoyt is one of my favorite authors and this end to the Maiden Lane series is great. A Georgian-era Batman and his Goddess of the Hunt make an amazing couple. Maximus faces his demons. Artemis fights to save her brother. A must read for anyone who loves romances.

I have eagerly awaited the Duke of Wakefield's book, and it did not disappoint. Artemis is the perfect mate for Maximus and the tale Ms. Hoyt spins is enthralling. I for one cannot not wait for the next installment (there will be one, right?!?). Asa and Apollo need to find their match, plus I'd love to see Phoebe find the one. Also, I'm interested in Penelope's fate :)

Fabulous series....but read them in order which I failed to do and was sorry. Ms Hoyt always polls me in with her unforgettable characters, compelling plots and sensual romances. Highly recommended series!

I love the Maiden Lane series. The hero and heroine are both very likable. I can't wait for the next installment. I'm also eagerly looking forward to the character Phoebe getting a book of her own.
I definitely recommend starting with the first book and going in order before reading this one.

Good characters and interesting plot. Maximus has many flaws but in the end we understand and forgive him. Artemis is a wonderful heroine! Intelligent and courageous.
Looking forward for Apollo book! And Asa's must be interesting too!

I really enjoy the Maiden Lane series and while " Charming Mickey" will alway be my favorite character Godric comes a close second. I like how Hoyt develops the characters and makes them seem like real people. I always preorder her Maiden Lane series as soon as I can

Elizabeth Hoyt has done it again. Great series and this lives up to the others. The Ghost of St. Giles is a captivating character. Megs desperately want a child. Both have lost their first loves and are hesitant to open their hearts to love again, yet they need each other desperately.
I would recommend this book to regency romance lovers, but would encourage reading the series in order.

I’m so tired of reading fanfic as published work. This is the third book in the last year, I’ve read that was based on another idea. Duke of Midnight was such a disappointment. It read like Wonder Woman/ Batman fanfiction based in the Georgian era. Even the author admits that she based Maximus’ character off of Bruce Wayne. Through the story the Hero refers to her as his “Warrior” and “his goddess” and literally calls her Diana countless times and ends with calling her his “wonderful Diana” despite her name being Artemis! Yes, I understand Diana is the name of a goddess, but so is Artemis. Why not refer to your future wife by her actual name?

Speaking of Artemis, she is one of the most selfish, ungrateful, and disloyal female heroines I have read since Wicked Intentions. I understand that her cousin was despicable, but she should have risen above that and not taken the man her cousin had planned to marry to bed. Also, Maximus was no hero. He was also selfish and had every intention of ruining her and installing her as his mistress when he MARRIED HER COUSIN. When intimate, he took no precautions and had no thought to the future she and their future illegitimate children would have suffered.

I’ve been so disappointed in her last three books that I think this will be my last Elizabeth Hoyt read.
