This a wonderful historical novel of the fall of Germany in WWII and the beginning of the Cold War between the USSR and the Western Allies. Most of the setting in in Berlin with wonderful information concerning the airlift that saved the city. The US and British airmen performed at their highest hour during "peacetime"!

Iris made the Airlift real. The people were realistically portrayed and the communist thinking of the era was truly pictured as I remember it from the time. The question of Germany's thinking at the end of the war was covered well. I enjoyed the presentation of the characters they lived flaws and all. Berlin was the hero. Well done.

The book is filled with so much information and history about the events of World War II. Leon Uris brought his characters to life and let us experience the war as they did. The technical knowledge that he imparted about the various aircraft used in the Berlin Airlift was extensively researched. The behind the scenes negotiations between England, France, the US and Soviet Union was frustrating and he allowed the reader to feel that frustration and betrayal. It was a great read.

Typical Uris heroic characters and extensively researched setting are there. Unfortunately, the book is stylistically a far cry from Trinity, Exodus, etc. I was quite disappointed--barely able to finish it.

Read this one years ago too. Great story, shows both sides of the aftermath of Europe post WWII when the lines were being drawn between the US and Russia in Berlin. Personally I think we made a serious mistake in stopping Patton but there it is.

Page turner! Must read! Exceptional novel of Berlin just prior to the end of the war and during the initial division of the city between the four allies, the division of the city between east and west, the airlift and of course all the personal intrigue and stories of the characters. It's excellent historical fiction!

As always, his research is impeccable and he is able to place his charcters into a believable time line. Not many surprises, but the manner in which the conflicts of the real history are resolved keep the reader guessing.
As is usual in Uris' works, he weaves the personal tragedies into the eventual victory or success of the main character. This novel seemed to follow a more modern day similarity to 'Trinity'. The more I read, the more I saw Connor Larkin personified in Sean O'Sullivan.

A well-researched novel based on fact about post war Germany, our western allies, the Russians and the German people. It examines interpersonal relationships, defeats and wins in the setting of death and deprivation . Not my favorite Iris book but a great read none the less.

A very interesting story about post WWII Germany. The characters are very interesting as well as the circumstances they find themselves in throughout the story. War sometimes creates strange bedfellows and this story is no exception. Leon Uris always writes an interesting story revolving around historical fact and this is another excellent read.

This novel gives the reader a general understanding of the Cold War situation that the United States faced with the Soviet Union, concerning the occupation of the City of Berlin 1945-1949. It further illuminates Stalin's pernicious and nefarious foreign policy in dealing with its former allies and the defeated people of Germany. Also the author, Uris, pulls no punches as he recounts the odious misdeeds of Hitler's fallen Nazi regime. Reading "Armageddon" is an entertaining way of brushing up on the events surrounding the early days of The Cold War

i really enjoyed the book. The only difference from the description is that the dust cover was missing. Figuring how that does not have any merit as to the content of the book, I really do not care. This was a gift for my wife. She read the book and said there was not any defects to the pages or binding.
Thanks.
Thanks.

He captured the mood and history of the times, a true snapshot that underscores the change in the American character and morality from then to contemporary times.
This should be a "must read" for first-year college students!

Extremely well written historical fiction based on substantial research. I assume the characters are fictional but the events leading up to and during the Berlin Airlift at the end of WWII were factual.

While the story is fact-based the novel is plodding and the personal relationships predictable. If you are interested in the resurrection of Berlin after WWII, read it. If you want that combined with great literature, don't.

The book in set in the time immediately following WWII and the beginning stages of the Cold War. I'm not enough of an expert in the historical events to know how historically accurate the book is to actual event, but it was an enjoyable read about a time that effects us to this day.

Excellent story of the Berlin Airlift. The inguinity of the American people never ceases to amaze me. A wonderful job saving the Germans living in Berlin in spite of the hate of the German people that so many of those Americans involved had at that time.

This book gave me great insight to the Italian scope of WWII. I enjoyed every chapter and was pleased
to return to read more books by Leon Uris. The first I read was Exodus and stayed up all night finishing it.
This brought back a lot of memories about the plight of the Jewish people, from the Italian prospective.

Fascinating story revolving around the end of WWII and the interaction between the Western alliance and the Russians over Berlin. Loaded with historical facts mixed with strong characters and an easy read. Very hard to put this book down! Thoroughly enjoyed this as well as Leon Uris's other books.

Uris spends sufficient time to set the tone of his characters and the setting in Germany at the end of World War Two. The story of Berlin is amazing. Although I am not well versed on the topic, the book gives a vivid view of the life and times of ordinary and extraordinary people who endured the destruction and influenced the revival of modern Berlin.

Once again Leon Uris makes history come alive. His storytelling explains the intricacies of what happened after WWII was over. We see how the Cold War started and how the U.S. stepped up to become a world power. And his characters made the story personal by showing the sacrifices our soldiers made when they could have gone home.

Since this novel concerns the end and aftermath of World War II in Germany and specifically addresses the Berlin airlift, it is both heartbreaking in parts and very uplifting. Given the complexity of the subject matter and the number of story lines and characters, it is very easy to read. It gives the reader a better understanding of the Greatest Generation and of some of the political choices and complexities that followed the end of World War II.

Armageddon is my favorite Leon Uris, unless I just reread Exodus. The book is the story of one of three brothers serving as soldiers during World War II, each in different capacities. Sean O'Sullivan's war is not one of glory and flying but of thinking and strategizing how the United States will occupy Germany after the War. After his brothers are killed by the Germans he finds it hard to do his job and begin the rebuilding of this enemy state.
The story gradual turns to Berlin, the first front of the Cold War. The struggles of Sean O'Sullivan are set against the drama and escalation between the United States and the Soviet Union culminating in the Soviet blockade of Berlin in 1948 and the fledgling United States Air Force successful effort to supply Berlin by air. An air power buff will love this story of the logistics and planning it took to supply half of Berlin, by air, for almost a year.
The intermingling of the facts of rebuilding Germany, the political fight for Berlin and its eventual division into East and West, and the Berlin Airlift with the story of Sean O'Sullivan and Ernestine a young German woman he comes to love create a potent story that you don't want to end despite the long pages.

Enjoyed reading about history that I remember as a young boy. Made quite a few friends who came here from Germany and Eastern Europe as Displaced People. It was a miracle created by a group of dedicated people

Having just been in Berlin last year and having passed through Check Pont Charlie in 1963, it was great to learn the back story on East and West Berlin. After the war the devastation of Berlin was enormous and the Soviet rule left East Berlin in a very sad state. The Americans, British and French tenaciously battled with the Russians in board rooms and offices to help as many Berliners as possible to return to a more normal life. Today Berlin is a beautiful city and you can not tell which sector you are in as it has been restored throughout. The canals and city parks are enjoyed by all.

Well, it's Leon Uris!
Very "detail oriented" and with the sense of responsibility for the veracity of the subject and/or the way it is described, it does take you in "its grip"and doesn't drop you until the end.
I am particularly found of the kind of subject the author approaches because it is my "storm". It is the painful rebirth of my adulthood life.
Loved it!

Very good book -- surprisingly relevant today for issues related to Russian aggression. My only quibble is that there is a large number of characters who aren't as well developed as I would have enjoyed, even though book is long.

This novel lets you live in a complete environment---At the end of WWII and right after in Germany and mostly Berlin. At first, I thought the subject matter would be dull, but the writing is very exciting and the characters interesting. I recommend this; you won't be able to put it down.

Excellent story telling. Characters are well developed. However, would have liked an author's note at the end identifying real incidents and people versus the fictional ones. This would have been especially useful to those who are too young to remember the actual history.

Really well done novel about the end of World War II and the aggression of Russia. I was a child at the time and have memories of the Berlin Airlift, but the details as described in Armageddon make it all real again. And especially good was the description of the actions of Russia - Putin fits right into this group.

Excellent book. Exactly what I look for in historical fiction. A great story that provides accurate insight into the time/events it is written around. This book gave me a new understanding of the beginning of the Cold war and just how extraordinary the Berlin Airlift was.

I purchased the Kindle edition of ARMEGEDDON by Leon Uris, intending to re-read something I had read over 30 years ago. The book is every bit as timely today. I heartily recommend it to anyone who has yet to discover the depth and perspective of Leon Uris.
the store Kindle delivery was prompt and almost effortless.

I read this thirty years ago and found it fascinating. Love all Leon Uris's books. It's the best and most interesting account I have ever read of the Berlin airlift. I don't know how historically correct it is but it makes for a really good read and have not found any discrepancies yet.

Second time I read the book, great read, informative. Hard to realize what it took to rebuild Germany the in fighting the battle with the Russians, the air lift to supply the people in Berlin and a glimpse at possible personal lives and feelings towards the German people.

Brilliant and mesmerizing. Very long and keeps attention super focused. All characters are wonderfully developed, understood who they were and how they felt. Plus I learned About the Airlift and what a huge difference it made in Europe's future.

Fascinating story or the real problems between Russia and the Allies in solving the Berlin problem. I was in the USAF based in German shortly after the Airlift ended and many of the situations illustrated are familiar.

An elite in the area of historical fiction, Leon Uris does not disappoint in the Novel Armageddon. Written decades ago, the insights on the nationalistic tendencies of the characters and their countries is relevant today. "Those that forget history are bound to repeat it".
