Cornwell is the standard for fantastic reasons. It has been fun being apart of Utred's journey. This is one of those turning points in his story that fans of this series are going to love. This tale is definitely worth the read and fans will love it.

The reader knows where all this is going from the first volume, Cornwell's writing still makes this last of the series a can't put down. Can't believe I how much money I spent finishing the series. That's how well done these are.

Typical of Cornwell on this series, a lot of fighting and gore but Uthred is such a great character and Cornwell's writing so entertaining that I could not wait to get to the next chapter, until I finished the book.

Another well-written segment of Cornwall's Saxon chronicles - a great view into 9th-10th century Britain, with compelling characters and fast-moving plot, as Uhtred finally realizes his dream of returning to Bebbanburg, his home fortress.

Another good installment in the series. I've enjoyed the Saxon Series as much as any I've ever read. When the last book is written and read, I'll be glad to have experienced them, but so sad that it has ended.

Utred finally achieves his life's ambition and must exercise all his guile and leftover luck to get there. A great story about a great character living in a time and place about which little is known. Good stuff.

If you have not read this entire series, then you must stop and go find the first book (The Last Kingdom, I believe). My only complaint about this series and this book is that they are to short! Mr. Cornwell always leaves me wanting more!

Mr. Cornwell is a fabulous writer. One actually misses the characters when a book is done. I have read every one and have never been disappointed. HIs grasp of history in all of its rich detail is pure genius and weaving these intricate stories is something all readers should experience. Thank you Bernard!

As usual this book , like the others in this series ,doesn't disappoint ! It kept me on the edge of my seat !it is full of action and a great conclusion to Utrech's story! It seems like the Saxon tales could go on for a few more books and I will buy every one of them !

Bernard Cornwell continues to keep the reader thoroughly engaged in the tale of this somewhat fictional development of England's unification. Only problem is that it reads so quickly, leaving you waiting for the next book!

Uhtred comes home. Fascinating story of 9th century England with the turbulent era having our hero trying to regain his birthright while fighting Norse, Scottish and Mercian foes. Heck of a good story

another awesome saxon installment, more of what you would expect from Uthred, it has continuity to the rest of the series and there were some unexpected twists. Is it the last in the series, maybe, could there be one more I think so.

Great book, but it seemed very rushed by Cornwell....it's not very long compared to other books in the series. Overall good story, but I was a bit disappointed. Seller was excellent and shipped extremely quickly.

These books never let me down. Loaded with realistic grit and historical authenticity these books transport the reader to a pivotal time in England's rich history. Uhtred as always is the embodiment of brains and brawn with a brutishly rye sense of humor. A robust warlord who uses his wits to outthink his adversaries before stomping them in to the afterlife with his battle skill. We could all learn a thing or two from Uhtred.

As engaging as Game of Thrones without the meandering loose threads and distracting side stories so prevalent in the works of Martin. Entertaining from beginning to end leaves you wanting more when you reach the last page.

Another excellent volume in the Uthred saga. Excellent writing and great twists to the story. The story of the battles for Bebbanbug may be mostly fiction, the information on the life in England during the 9th cenrury are incredible and then there are all those battles... What a read!

Maybe the best of the series! Mr. Cromwell always tells an exciting tale but after waiting for so long for Utred to finally regain his home it is particularly sweet to have shared his triumph in a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Mr. Cornwell remains one of my top favorites of historical fiction novels. His details of battle strategy and action never fails to entertain. My pulse quickens and I too, am a soldier in the shield wall.

Another excellent offering from Bernard Cornwell. My only "disappointment" was the admission in the Historical notes as to how little was actually borrowed from history but still a great read. And while I still have no need what so ever for a Seax, I find my self shopping for a reproduction.

Bernard Cornwell is very good at writing historical fiction, and this is book 10 of a very good series. Has been made into a TV Series which is also good. The action in his books moves along well, they are a quick read.

Great historical fiction. The books in the series can stand alone, but I highly recommend starting at the beginning. A great adventure, rooted in history, with well developed characters. I hope there are more books to follow.

Just finished the series and really enjoyed each story. Not a bad one in the bunch. string characters, believable storylines, consistent characters. Just a very good series for Viking fans or just historical fiction.
