I was sharply disappointed in this last book of the series-especially since I enjoyed the first two preceding books. The plot was boring-battles here, there, and everywhere. Kali was complaining to herself about how ill and cold she constantly felt but even in her weakened state was able to defeat the demon so that he had to flee the city. Ah, really? It just seemed so uninspired and trite.

I love Kalinda. She is a strong woman and committed to her country. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to free her people. At the same time, she’s a young woman—vulnerable and unsure. Just the kind of character I like to read. During the course of the story, Kalinda must continue to be the force that holds her country together, find support from other countries, fight a demon disguised as her dead husband, Rajah Tarek, and protect her friends and loved ones—all while trying to determine the correct course and who she can trust.

Kalinda is also caught up in a love triangle of sorts—she’s clear that she loves Deven, but to save her kingdom, she might need to marry Prince Ashwin, the Raja’s son. So who does she follow—her heart or her duty to her country?

The supporting characters are great. Both Deven and Prince Ashwin have strengths and weaknesses that make them very real. Some of the women who were once Kalinda’s competitors become her allies, and their motivations and loyalties are revealed.

There is a lot of travel, political intrigue, and plot turns throughout. We see much more of the political system and the Bhuta magic system. (I took a test and apparently I’m a Burner.) The story is fast-paced and kept me reading long hours into the night because I couldn’t put it down.

There is a story within the story early in the book, and I thought it was kind of weird that so much time was spent with it. If you feel that way too, just keep reading. There’s a reason.

Note: When I finished the book, I was in a panic because I thought this was a 3-book series. Oh, no! It just can’t end this way!!! It doesn’t. THE WARRIOR QUEEN is already up for pre-order on the store. It will be out August 14, 2018.

There is significant violence in this book (and the other two). It is a story of people at war. While I would be okay with older teens reading this, parents might want to read it first. There’s some kissing and sensuality, and mild language. I give this book 4 1/2 STARS.

Wow, Emily! I really enjoyed this third book in your series. The story remained true to the previous two books and was engaging. Alternating between Kali and Deven's perspectives have the plot depth and interest. The ending was an interesting surprise. How am I going to have the patience to wait for the next book? I want to read it now.

Notes and Opinions:
This book was beyond amazing! I can't wait for the fourth book in the series. When Jessica asked me to review this for her I thought na I am not going to like this one but man three books in and I am hooked!!! This is one series that grows on you as you read it. Kalinda is a kick-butt main character and I love her to bits. I can't wait to see what King does with her for the last book and I am really sad to see it all end.

Go Into This One Knowing: This one won't slow you down at all!

The story is ramming some bad theology down its readers. Fiction or not, there should be a moral compass that undergirds all stories. The Rogue Queen pontificates how "love" is all about feelings and sex, and are determinate of relationship. Yet marriage, the commitment that allows feelings and sex to flourish, is only an afterthought to be considered down the road if the relationship gets "serious". While some without life experience may embrace this view in their youth, this author seems to have a mission to force her readers to accept.

I keep wanting too like this series, but the distorted worldview, and pushy nature leaves me looking for another series.

Smash the patriarchy is right! In the thrilling third installment in The Hundredth Queen series, Kalinda must risk life and love in an attempt to banish the demon disguising itself as Rajah Tarek. This story is filled with action, adventure, and lots of swoony romance that will keep readers on the edge of their seats!

Just like the two previous The Hundredth Queen books before it, THE ROGUE QUEEN serves up some serious girl power! Reading these books is such an empowering and inspiring experience. These books are an amazing lesson in sisterhood and Kali is certainly a hero that young girls can look up to.

While the women are my favorite parts of these stories, King also writes some incredible male characters as well. Not only are the heroes in these stories strong and dreamy, they are also feminists themselves. I love the way these characters believe unfailingly in Kali's strength, capability, and leadership. They are always there to help Kali, but they don't feel the need to save and protect her, and I LOVE that.

I really enjoyed getting to see more of the world in this third novel in the series. It was really neat to get a better sense of the larger political picture and watch how the various countries allied themselves when it came time for the final showdown. It was also fascinating to see how different people from different regions valued the Bhuta magic.

The elemental-based magic system was beautifully crafted. King did a great job of establishing rules for the different powers, so that the magic never feels too easy or convenient, and while it was so much fun to see Kali wielding her power with greater strength than ever before, the limitations of her power also really served to add some fantastic tension to this story.

While the romance is certainly not the star of this story, it still plays a major role, and King did a great job of weaving it through the novel without allowing it to overpower the plot. There is a love triangle in this story, and it's so much fun! Not only are both of the love interests incredibly dreamy, but this love triangle is much more complex than it appears to be on the surface.

This is one very fast-paced story. There is so much action throughout the story and with the stakes at such a constant high, this book is unputdownable!

I would recommend these books to anyone! Not only is the story itself a lot of fun to read, but I feel that everyone, men and women alike, could take away so many great lessons on feminism from this series.

The ending is phenomenal and will leave readers wanting more! While the story felt largely resolved, there is one element that ends on a cliffhanger, and I'm absolutely dying to find out what happens next. I'm so glad we're going to be getting a fourth novel in this phenomenal series.

I am really loving this series! For some reason I was thinking that this was the last book, but no. Again I am left with my heart hanging because the ending? Ugh!!

Absolutely nothing comes easy for Kalinda. Her whole life has been one struggle after another. It seems like for Kalinda, along with her little band of friends, there is no break, no chance to relax and no time to breathe. Which is equally awesome and exhausting as a reader as well. The pacing is fast, things are always happening and I love that but by the end of the book I feel like I have to suck in big breath and relax myself!

Because this is book three, these characters are like old friends to me. I am invested in them and I care about them. I'm ready to see some conclusion and resolution for them. I hope the next book is the last book. ? And I wish I had it right now.

This is a series that must be read in order. It is on Kindle Unlimited if you have that!

Content: violence, kissing, a fade to black bedroom scene with no details other than the couple wakes up naked together.

The series continues with another great entry! The Rogue Queen is an excellent addition and greatly carries the story of Kalinda. While this is Kalinda’s story, Deven’s story is equally as important. Kalinda is infected with the cold fire from Udug which enables her to use her own power. Every time she tries to search for her own inner soul fire she just sees the blue sapphire light that is now inside of her. Her coldness causes her to seek warmth wherever she can, which leads her to Ashwin. Ashwin seems to be the only one to cause the cold to disappear. Once Mathura and Rohan appear without Brac and Opal, Deven knows he has to go find them. Unable to trust Hastin, he tries to convince Kalinda not to go back to Samiya for the meeting. Kalinda feels like this is the only way to beat Udug and put Ashwin on the throne. Disagreeing on this and the ever growing closeness of Kalinda and Ashwin, they take different paths. Kalinda and Deven taking different paths brought so much more depth to the story. Each path has issues and difficulties to overcome. I felt like I needed to know what was going to happen. Will Kalinda and Ashwin created the alliance in Samiya? Will Deven and the other be caught in the demon rajah’s camp? The suspense of not knowing if they will succeed and get to Tarachand in time was very well executed. Being able to read from both point of views really ties the story together.

New friendship and alliances are formed while old ones are tested. We get more of Indah and Pons who are great additions to the story. All of the new characters introduced in this story successfully balance the old characters we are already invested in. I found Kalinda's to be a little whiny in this book but that quickly resolves in the end! At some points I did find it hard to read her story and was waiting to get back to Deven. I kept reminding myself that she was infected with the cold fire and she’ll return back to her strong self. She has accepted her role as Kindred more and her confidence was higher than when we originally see her back in The Hundredth Queen. I really enjoy seeing her grow with each task and can only imagine how strong she will be in the final book! We get a lot from Deven’s point of view in this book, which makes me love his character ever more! His devotion is so admirable. He really would do anything for those he loves. I am really glad that we were able to get more of Deven in this book as his character brings more to the story than just a love interest. All of the characters create some sort of connection that I am truly interested and concerned with what happens next in the story.

Overall, The Rogue Queen was the perfect addition to this series. I enjoyed every minute of the story and did not want to put it down. The ending of the book is AMAZING. Once I started, I honestly could not stop. Each part that happens makes you want more. This whole series has been amazing, and this book did not disappoint. I cannot wait to continue the story and see what happens next

❝ "Dutiful men are all the same-- martyrs. You want for everything but take nothing for yourself. You sacrifice your own happiness for others and validate your ensuing misery with your magnanimous loyalty." ❞

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!

The Rogue Queen was another great continuation of the Hundredth Queen series. After surviving yet another tournament and facing one of her greatest enemies, Kalinda still isn't done. Not only does she have to deal with demon's effects on her powers, but she has to figure out what her heart wants: Devin or Ashwin, love or her throne. I also want to say that the book did a fantastic job of summarizing up the previous events in the beginning, which I could really appreciate since I can sometimes forget what happened if it's been a while.

As usual, I wasn't thrilled about the romance in this book. I haven't cared for it since the first book because it's all felt like insta-love for me (sorry Devin). And although we still had the love triangle with Kalinda, Devin, and Ashwin in this book I understood it better in The Rogue Queen. At first, it was very annoying reading from Kalinda's perspective because she was always swooning over Ashwin and wondering if her being attracted to him was the same as loving him. She was just very naive and lovestruck. I thought it was silly/annoying, but I was glad we were given an explanation later in the book where this all makes sense. I thought it was an interesting and logical approach to it, and I could accept it.

In book two it felt like Devin was being really petty and self-pitying so I wasn't a fan of his period and that didn't change with this book either. I still felt like Devin was prideful and too concerned with his rank. It's understandable that he felt lost for a while because that had been his whole life, but I felt it was time he showed some growth and started to move past it. To his credit, I guess you can say he did start moving past his rank in this book. I respected him more when he fought his jealousy and tried to understand that Kalinda was doing what was necessary to save her people/friends.

Ashwin was pretty much the same story. I didn't like him at first, but I did respect him more towards the end. My big problem with his character (which started in book two) was that he instantly fell in love with Kalinda. Seriously, it was love at first sight for him and he was super obvious. I have a problem with characters that instantly fall in love (which is why I don't care for any of the romances in this book) because it doesn't feel organic. If you don't care much about that then this book will be even more fun; it's still fun with the romance, but since I don't enjoy it that always knocks off a star for me.

Aside from that, my only other issue was that he tended to keep Kalinda out of the loop for big decisions (to be fair, Kalinda did the same thing sometimes). I think that was just due to his inexperience being a ruler, and he did better later on.

❝ Healer Baka once told me that peace is a choice. A decision not to be at odds with the world. I have been at odds with Tarek for so long, I know no other way. But we are not the same. I have to make a better choice than he did. I must let go, or I will earn a place with him. ❞

And the last character I'll talk about is Kalinda--because how could I not talk about her, haha! But yeah, Kalinda was still a great character in this book. She fought for those that couldn't defend themselves. Although, she did have some rough moments. Without spoiling anything, Kalinda's powers take a hit because of the events in the last book and she finds a temporary solution (a bad one) that she takes up a couple times in the book. I wasn't happy that she did it--and yes, she felt bad afterward. But still.

I think we saw a more vulnerable Kalinda in this book because she actually fell into temptation and made some bad/harmful decisions. She was also a bit childish when she went back to the temple and tried to do away with the whole Claiming aspect. She acted irrationally. It felt like "I'm the Queen so I can do whatever I want". I just think she could've been more tactful about it and that she should've told Ashwin her intentions since they were supposed to be working together.

And the last thing I'll say about Kalinda is that I enjoyed the character growth that came with her facing Rajah Tarek. I liked that this came back into play and that she was able to face her feelings and move past this. It felt too wrapped up in the first book and I'm glad that she actually addressed this.

Now, let's talk plot and pacing. Did I enjoy the plot of this book? Yes! But, it wasn't perfect. I felt like the whole series was building up to this big bad enemy and then... it was all over in a flash. This is actually an issue I had with every book. It's nice to have things move along but it's kind of right on the edge of being too fast? I just expected our big enemy to take more than one book to defeat is all. It's not terrible enough to say that I didn't like it, and maybe we'll still get to see more of him in the next book considering how this one ended.

And that ending! Intense and gripping! I was so worried about our characters, I wanted to see how everything would play out and when the big battle happened I was not disappointed. As always, I won't spoil things, but when the characters went underwater... nail-biting. Admittedly, I wasn't too surprised with the "reveal" at the end regarding that. And it totally left me eager to read the next book. I can't wait to see how Kalinda's journey progresses and how this series wraps up.

Overall, another great hit in the series! One that I recommend for fantasy lovers!

I had taken a break from this series but recently began reading it again. I was not disappointed at all! If anything, I loved The Rogue Queen more than the first two books. This surprised me because I loved The Hundredth Queen. The Rogue Queen begins right where the story left off with our heroes fleeing in order to live another day to fight the demon again. Kalinda is running out of time and the rest of the characters are tormented by their own thoughts and actions. I was happy to see that the world building and introductions to characters in the first two books paid off to deliver quite the story in this book. Characters we were introduced to join the fight and stories we were told about the gods come into play in the characters actions during the battle. The Rogue Queen was a nonstop action packed ride! There were moments that I felt were predictable but I still found this book thrilling!

The Rogue Queen is the third book in The Hundredth Queen series.

I was hoping that this was the last book in the series since my attraction to this series was starting to dwindle. But of course, the series will have another book coming out around August 2018.

The story is about Kalinda and her group trying to find a way to destroy the demon disguised as Rajah Tarek. New alliances are made and old dangers reappear. Add Kalinda's corrupted powers into the mix, and things get even more complicated.

Overall, I enjoyed the story.... but this series has lost some of the sparkle. The romance was a bit bland and the characters just became boring. Some of the scenes were just a drag to read, and I wanted to stop reading it entirely. I really hope The Warrior Queen turns things around.

It just keeps getting better and better! I can't wait to read the next and final book ( makes me sad too and I'll have a major book hangover cause the series will be done ?).

This book was action packed and very emotional. It had some reveals and the ending was very intense. I was all over the place reading this book and then I couldn't move or stop until I was done once I started reading the last few chapters or so.

Seriously if you haven't checked out or read these books yet then go check them out now! Especially if you like fantasy and adventure and the like all in an awesome story with clean language and no violence and such either.

Overall I did enjoy this book and the previous books in the series. I am disappointed that this was not actually the final book. I am getting very tired of researching a series, thinking I'm actually getting the complete series, being told it's "book 3 of 3" only to find out that no, there is a 4th (and god forbid a 5th or 6th) book yet to come. This has happened to me so many times. This series COULD have been wrapped up just fine in this book. A sequel series could still be written - there is enough foundation in these first three to allow for several different approaches to series that follow. I'll wait, and possibly remember to come back to it and read the 4th book when it comes out, but I may not even recall it by that time. I wish it just would have said "Book 3 of 4" so I at least knew going in that it wouldn't actually wrap up the story.

I'm not good at leaving a descriptive review. All I can say is I love to read and find a book that I love. I compare it to city of bones though it is obviously not the same. It drew me in a bit faster and I think I would actually read again which I never do. I love strong woman characters but still have flaws and emotions. Never a fan of the audio but thats me. I want to create in my own head what they sound like. You might not think you have time for a book let alone a series. But you do have time to go to another place and escape just a little each night. :)

I have really really enjoyed this series so far and I was very excited to get an ARC of this from the publisher via Netgalley.

I didn't find this installment to be as good as the last one and I'm not 100% sure why but I still really enjoyed it. Like the previous book, the story continues to be told from 2 points of view, Kali's and Deven's and their characters become more fleshed out as a result. Kali continues to be caught in the love triangle with Deven and Ashwin while also trying to deal with her own personal demons (quite literally). Old characters come out to play, new characters are introduced, some secrets are revealed, questions are raised...it's all part of the roller coaster of this novel.
This is a novel about love, life, spirituality, religion, freedom, magic, and finding ones self. The ending was the perfect set up for the next novel though and I am extremely curious to see how the series is going to end...if it's going to end. I would definitely recommend. Well done.

The Rougue Queen is the third story in The Hundredth Queen series. I loved the first book. The main character, Kalinda was strong and grew into herself and her powers. This book begins where the second left off, our main characters Kalinda, Ashwin, Devin and company are traveling to the south isles where they can regroup and plan an attack to take back their empire and get rid of the demon Udug. I felt this story dragged. It felt like one step forward and two steps back. It took too long to come to the point. This series was originally meant to be a trilogy book and I must say mid-book I was looking forward to the conclusion. Unfortunately, Emily R. King has decided to extend to at least a fourth book and left this third book unfinished at the end. I am unsure if I will read the next story.

I literally have no fingernails. I chewed them all off. Kalinda is in the thick of the turmoil. She's not well, her relationship with the general is on shaky ground and the Prince is manipulating his relationship with Kalinda. The demon Raja is making his move to destroy the world and the hero's of this book need to defend the living or be lost to the void. My heart is weary and I Ned the next book like now to bring my heart some relief.

Again I am pulled into Emily King’s descriptive tales of her heroine Kalinda.

The adventure heightens as Kalinda struggles to defeat a demon who threatens to wipe all life as she knows it away. But magic and heartbreak threaten her pursuit of alliances in her desire to defeat the demon who has mislead her people.

She must rise above the prejudice of her kind and place the empire first even at the expense of those she loves. .

Can she?

On to the next book for me!

The Hundredth Queen series gives the reader one cliff hanger after another. Just when you think Rani Kalinda and her friends have triumphed over warlords, tyrants and demons, they are caught off guard and thrust into new perils. This third installment introduces new characters, both friendly and evil, takes us through a war, and ALMOST gives us a happy ending. But then.....

To be continued in the next volume. I can hardly wait.

This is a good story. That narrative style was annoying to me and the ending was not quite enough to satisfy me. The author is talented and many may love these books, but I was disappointed in this last one, especially. Give it a try..you may totally love it.

It wasn't until this installment that I could finally stop seeing this series as a fanfiction of Avatar the Last Airbender. And it's not a bad thing.
I feel with this ending, there's a closure. There is only 2 loose ends with the conclusion of this story. I'm interested to see how it creates a full book.

I tore through this book! I couldn’t get enough of Kalinda and her path to get the empire back. It was nice to be able to see some events through Deven’s eyes so that the reader can jump around to different areas. So many parts of this tale were heart wrenching as more characters die but others finally get their love story.

I think what catches me the most about this series is the culture. I love that culture is becoming more diverse in YA because stereotypical Caucasian-descent MCs are really played out. The world isn't just that. Anyway, the culture is probably the only thing I could say I consistently liked because it is different, but at the same time Kali you have behaving like almost any other teenager in a YA. I feel like the love interest in this should have been negated completely. That always seems to be the issue with YA is that the female character HAS to have a male love interest, or a love interest at all which I'm not a fan of.

The breakout war is always fun because it's not the typical saves the world type war exactly. There's not the same kind of magical quest/journey trope, but it keeps on moving and the story at the very least keeps enough action that your attention stays to a degree. I don't know if it's just my mood with YA authors and stories, but this title wasn't the best thing since Harry Potter kind of good. It was pleasantly enjoyable. I'd recommend it, and say give it a try, but it's also on a very conservative scale of good. You'd either love it, or really hate it for most, but me it's just on the cusp of above average, so 3-3.25 stars.

This was the best book in the series. Filled with action, heartache, romance, suspense and twists and turns. I still don’t like the way the author just drops the endings without transitions. If you don’t like abrupt, unfinished, cliffhanger endings then this may not be for you.

As Kalinda continues her struggles against the demands of fate & responsibility, all the kingdoms strive to find their place in a world on the edge of everlasting night.
The climactic battle is reminiscent of Tolkien's Battle of 5 Armies. Another worthy read.
