Written in the traditional theme of the shipwrecked survivors who are forced to draw on their wits and knowledge to survive alone.
It's a far better read than The Mysterious Island, but less realistic than Robinson Crusoe.
It's also very dated with its heavy religious emphasis.
Set on a large but remote South American island, its quite inaccurate with the assortment of animals that pop up, which in reality are mostly only found in Africa and Asia.
But it's still a very good book and worth a place in anyone's electronic library.

I was looking for a shorter version of this great classic but his one fell since elements of good writing have been reduced to something more formulaic. It has been a good follow-up independent read for 2nd graders, however.

There were a few mistakes in this kindle editing of the classic tale. Never in the original was the ostrich's name, Hurricane ever shortened to, Hurry, as it was in this version. Kayak, was not referred to as cajack, as it was in this version, and other minor mistakes as well. Otherwise, it is more like the original, but there are not as many illustrations as an illustrated version should have.
Revised Edition - Who They Are and What They Teach :: I am Haunted: Living Life Through the Dead :: Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus :: Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living :: The Scarlet Pimpernel (Signet Classics)

I enjoyed the movie and upon starting this book, was surprised at how different it was from the movie! I quickly found out why: this book is meant to be read as a survivor's journal rather than a story. If you love to learn about nature and what to look for when trying to survive on an island, this is great. However, as an entertaining story book, it can easily become bland and monotonous.

This feels like someone took a public domain book and decided to sling out their own version. It wasn't a paperback format, the pages are standard 8.5*11. There's also little touches like they got the author's name wrong on the cover. I'm going to track down a copy from a real publisher.

I read The Swiss Family Robinson decades ago as a young father. It was great reading and the style and language is a stretch for a modern reader. It is a very good stretch, for youth and adults. It leaves a good impression as the reader will be transported to far away islands and will feel caught up in another time and.

There were so many editions of this book listed on the store I failed to understand it is a simplified Chapter Book. I think it would be appropriate for a 3rd grade reading level. I was hoping for a more sophisticated version for my 5th grader. Hits all the important parts, but very short, very simplified.

Loved this story as a child. Purchased for one of the novels I am having my daughter read for her 4th grade homeschool next year. Cannot wait to see her read this story that I loved as a child. Plus the story has nothing I need to worry about or give awkward explainations!!!

Swiss family Robinson is a traditional tale of adventure. Fantastic in the variety of species of both animals and crops found in the island. The story is especially pleasing to those desiring the happily-ever-after tale. Every need is met, every challenge attacked with a grand creativity and an abundance of resources with which to solve it.

I would not recommend buying this book by these publishers: First Rate Publishers. The print is so small I can hardly read it, and there are no illustrations in the book at all. Guess I should have gone to the book store for this one to make sure I was getting a good quality novel.

The book arrived on time for Christmas as promised. It was a gift for my grandson who LOVES it! It has been many a year since I read the book to his dad, but I enjoyed the book as much as my children did when I read it to them. I read it aloud while they had chickenpox! Took their minds off their misery!
The book was as promised and I would order from this shipper again.

A classic!

Adults should communicate with young readers, because of a few problematic issues. The world view is that of its day, it was originally published in 1812. Errors in taxonomy, botany, chemistry, phylogeny, biology, geography, medicine are plentiful. I believe there was some old-fashioned ideas about "races of men" also. Some words are used in their archaic form, such as "faggot", which need to be explained to young readers.

I would recommend this book to readers of all ages, children an parents alike. There is much that can be learned from this book: it teaches the values of resourcefulness, courage in the face of the unknown, resilience, tolerance, family values and moral values. Although the theme of the book is too biased towards Christianity as a medium of imparting all it contains, I wish to digress. It has its fair share of adventure and the world is beautifully described barring a few discrepancies in the geography, flora and fauna. The emotions are portrayed in a gratifying manner and the characters are enjoyable although there is a slight lack of detail. All in all, a thoroughly fantastic read.

This classic pits the family against the elements and provides an easy, relaxing read. There is a badly missed element of conflict throughout. No problem proves unsolvable. Every member of the family agrees with and respects the mother and father with none of the true-to-human-nature discord readers have come to expect.

The have read and reread the Swiss Family Robinson many times including my own hard copy from the late 19th century. They have all been more or less the same. The edition, apparently the first translation from the original Wyss german (into french) is similar, but has some notable differences, especially the ending. There are lengthy introductary segments which I found of great interest but will probably be of most interest to a Swiss Family Robinson aficionado like myself. If you are looking for the good old Swiss Family Robinson as you know it, then skip this one, but for a collector it is of great interest.

As someone else mentioned, this is the full unabridged edition, but if you're expecting illustrations that go along with the story, you'll have to look elsewhere. This was the only disappointing part of this digital product.

My son read this for homeschool. It was wonderful except for the racist remarks that were acceptable for the time period, like calling the native Americans "savages", and a few other unnecessary remarks.

Of the many 'classics' that are read because "teacher said so" this is an exception. It's engaging, interesting, and even if the language is occasionally a bit old-fashioned, it's still eminently readable and fun.

The story of this family is quite exciting with their many adventures. They are very resourceful with the natural resources on the island and it is interesting to see the uses of the materials they find. I gave the book 4 stars just because some of these explanations just seem to drag on and you keep hoping that they will move on soon. We read this for our homeschool book club and for the most part, really enjoyed it.

Interesting book, characters too. Family is stranded on an island with only their wits and what they can salvage from the destroyed ship and find on the island to help them survive. They do and prosper very well.

A great moral story of the importance of faith , family , and hard work producing quality adults .
There is the mystery of how the East African savanna ended up on a remote south PACIFIC island. Ignore the impossible and enjoy the story .

Admittedly, this book is a classic and will forever hold the distinction. I enjoyed the read with my son for a school book report. I would have scored 5 stars, but this version and the chapters did not coinside with the study guide. My advice if reading for school is to get a different version. If you are just reading to enjoy, then you have come to the right place.

This book was long and overly descriptive. If detail after detail of how to make or set up each thing on the island gets you excited, then read it. I grew up watching the Disney movie. This, in short, is not the same thing. Interesting, but it was a bit dull and you trudge through some chapters.

This version does contain all the scenes that I remember well from readings when I was a child (the snake, the second island, the extraordinary ending). It was a good conversion to kindle of a wonderful old story.

I am fairly certain that this is an abridged version, as I remember it being much longer the last time I read this book.

Still a good and entertaining story, just something to be aware of in case you need to be certain you are reading the full book.

The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I have not yet started reading it to my daughter but it is for preparation for our trip to Disney this year because I heard there is a Swiss Family Tree house attraction there.

I loved this classic when my third grade teacher read it to us; I loved it when I read it as a teen and I still love it. In our way too fast and busy world it is refreshing to pause, relax and visit a world of simplicity. No lack of moral compass or purpose, just clean cut basic survival and peace with one's maker.

Though this story was written with children in mind it still begs one simple question: If I found myself shipwrecked on a deserted island, would I be able to survive? My own honest answer would be: I don't know. But I would certainly recommend this classic tale to both the young and the young-at-heart =0)

This isn't the translation I remember from my childhood (no snake! And I don't remember anything about them going to another island.), but it was a fun read. I love survival stories, and this is a classic. The father is a little too perfect, and the stereotypes are a bit much, but it was still fun. You have to keep in mind the timeframe in which it was written, and the types of stories that were popular.
