A fascinating series where each book stands alone and sheds some new light on its intelligent introspective chaplain/detective hero tackling the iterplay of religion, passion and crime surrounding a prison in a smalll town. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have found a new author to follow.

I truly enjoyed these stories. They were each a separate story but actually tied together. Have to say I wished Chaplain John's stories continued as I thought they were a lot of fun and am looking forward to his further adventures.

I was disappointed in this collection of Short Stories. I guess I missed that note when I bought them. I have never been a fan of short stories. The recent James Patterson Women's Murder Club book I bought was the same. I much more enjoy a story that lets you come to know the characters and has more depth to the book.
The Marriage Pact: A Novel :: The Girl Before :: The Nightmare Before Christmas - 20th Anniversary Edition :: Believe Me: A Novel :: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe v. Wade

I really like these mysteries; the author comes across as extremely intelligent & open minded. He does great character development & I really grew to like his John Jordan character as a very REAL person, which I often missing in our society. I felt I was being educated some too about prison life & what it would be like to be a chaplain in a prison environment. As another reviewer said there is quite a bit of religious & bible stuff in this as he's a chaplain & I usually don't like that either as I had too much shoved down my throat growing up, but he comes across as more open minded about all of that than those I've met in fundamentalist religions. I like Spiritual more than religious. Also I gave this review after only reading the 1st mystery & just starting the 2nd, which did have some violence & sexual content, which I initially indicated I didn't find. I do still like the author & would recommend him still so far. Well I just read the 3rd & now find it too far fetched & boring, so am not continuing on.

Have really enjoyed Michael's JJ character. Just finished the short stories. Wondered what happened to Laura; still waiting for Susan to resurface. And everyone needs a friend like Merrill. For the most part I know people like the characters he writes about. Looking forward to next chapter.

Very entertaining although I do find that the editing needs some attention as the grammar is poor in some instances in the use of the English language. It is very personable and certainly tackles the issue of the recovering alcoholic very well.

Spell binding. Shows all sides of Christianity. The first mystery was really good. Could not put the book down. But I would say adults only should read it., because of the violence, language, and situations described.

JJ is a unique individual whose introspection and humanity make him believable as most “detectives “ are not... The prison and small town setting provide interesting aspects to the stories. I found myself fully engrossed in them
