Pleasant young women, Bobbi Anderson, at her backwoods retreat goes for a walk with her adorable, beloved and aging beagle. Now I love dogs, have two of them now, and one is a beagle. Absolutely marvelous dogs--most people think so.
So when Bobbi stumbles over something on her walk--a mysterious something--her curiosity is piqued. Fred (the beagle) doesn't like it one bit. Oh boy, I think, the beagle's gonna get it! Big time! Do I want to read this? King has a habit of creating interesting, fully realized characters, getting you to like them, and then killing them!
The main plot of the story owes a great deal to H.P. Lovecraft's subtle "Colour Out of Space." Certain cues in the story lead me to believe that King meant us to understand this. The other major thread of the story might be called "The anti-tragedy of Jim Gardner"--anti-tragedy because, contrary to classic tragedy, Bobbi's old friend and lover Jim is a truly dreadful character who, through a spark of essential decency buried deep within him, rises to redeem his soul by the end. He is "The Shining's" Jack Torrance written even larger--the classic obnoxious individual whose character flaws and alcoholism are in a deadly embrance to drive him ever lower. But unlike Jack Torrance, who is a decent but destructively self-centered person actively fighting his dark impulses, Jim Gardner self-pityingly wallows in them, so it is much harder to kindle the spark of sympathy for Jim that allows us to care whether he lives or dies until very late in the book. But, at the end, Jim's personal redemption resembles nothing so much as Sidney Carton's in "A Tale of Two Cities"--King's emotionally wrenching ending could only have been iced by having Jim quote "It is a far far better thing..."
I gave this book three stars. I could have cranked it up to four for the ultimately pulling together of the story line and especially for the truly novel aspects of the alien lifeform at the heart of the story, but I have to let it slip back to three because the book suffers from King's success. In short, he needs an editor--one who will not regard some hacking and sawing as desecration of a sainted writer. The book almost lost me several times in the middle. At 500 pages instead of 750 it might have moved along and been a far more compelling read.
Oh--like Mr. King I mentioned a major character at the beginning of the story and then (as in many an old English novel) let you almost forget about him until the end. The fate of Fred the Beagle. Yes, he dies. But were that it were that simple. Or kind.

Stephen king wrote this book with great imagination self moving coke machines etc... I mean how many people can actually imagine dying by a soda machine and it makes sense only in a way he wrote the book a higher intelligence buried in a ground who specialize in making off the wall type stuff and cowinceadently that intelligence is passed on the more the ship in the ground is uncovered.
I thought the characters were well explained and had no trouble imaganing what they looked like. The one thing I did not like was the ending I thought it was vague and kinda short sorta like he was in a hurry to finish it and just threw toghther a ending just to finish this already long book.
I feel he should have shortened the middle which I felt was to long and he should have worked harder on the ending but thats just my opinion

Wow, the wild differences in reviewers here is crazy! Personally, how anyone could not appreciate this book as one of his BEST is beyond me. This book creeped me out from the beginning and never let up. If he was on drugs at the time then maybe he should get back on them! Stephen King is a writer who has always been able to create atmosphere in his books but in this one he outdoes himself. I was dragged into this book and didn't come out until the writer spat me out at the end and boy was I frustrated! Why? Because I didn't want it to end. In my opinion, this is his best work ever. Must reading for all horror fans.

The Tommyknockers is one of the books Stephen King wrote when he was coked up and running out of ideas. It rolls along like a freight train, packed with classic B-movie ideas like: a town turning into zombies, a hidden flying saucer, and a flawed hero trying to save everyone. By the end, everything is on fire and the hero is stumbling through the woods with most of his bones broken, running on adrenaline and fear.
It's a lot of fun. Stephen King dropped all pretense to being a serious writer when he wrote this little epic of trashy suspense. Sure, the inside of the flying saucer is a let-down --- and the fire-bug at the end is pointless --- but Stephen King really knows how to keep you turning the pages.

The farther that Stephen King's books stray from plausible reality, the weaker they often are. In addition to being WAY too long, "The Tommyknockers" suffers from a second half that stretches believability to the breaking point. The setup is effective, of course at this point the reader has no idea what is causing the increasingly horrific events in the town. The answer, as it unfolds, is a bit of a disappointment. Also, few of the many characters engender any sympathy. This is not one of King's better novels.

If it was just electromagnetism then it wouldn't need to be unburied to have effects on its surroundings. And if it's gas then a metal plate in your head wouldn't help... and metal brackets on ones legs wouldn't help either! If they did then all those people in their cars would have been fine since they were surrounded my metal in their car.
This book was dumb and I think Stephen knew it was dumb SPOILER at the end when Gardner explains to Bobbi that they aren't smart they're intelligent workers at best but but not creative thinkers. Sorry if this review is harsh I'm upset I wasted so much time (I read 650 pages...) and wish I had picked a different novel for my first Stephen King read.

My least favorite S.K. novel. Slow, boring, and overall uninteresting. had to force myself to read i till the end only because i never leave a book unfinished.
BUT, i loved the last page of the book. SPOILERS BELOW:
The idea that the spaceship flew away, carrying one single half-dead man into a place unknown to us gave me chills. a captivating idea, and a creepy situation.
But then, to read more than 700 pages to enjoy the one last page is not a very good thing.

I finally finished reading this book after 5 months of on-and-off attention. A great story, very well written and... believe it or not... a pretty good ending too (I say this because although I love King's books, its the endings that normally let a good story down).
It a long, intertwinning story that will keep you entertained. I read Dreamcatcher prior and so had the similarities to contend with. It is, however, in its own way better than Dreamcatcher.
I do think the story could have been told in less pages but thats Stephen King for you!!!

This is one of Stephen kings most twisted works. It has a fantastic,well-written enviorment and atmosphere, it combines a bit of horror with an amazing story and a very twisted and bizzare ending. You'll really find out what the word tommyknocker means. This is really beautiful book it's all together one great story and shows you how far Stephen King can stretch his mind. This one of his best books if not already the best.Judging from other books of his I've read, it is a book you must read

I liked this novel and the characters introduced. A little science fiction mixed in with Stephen King's usual horror. I like the fact that the heroes of the story have the same hang ups and problems we all do and have to deal with them while trying to fix what is dug up in the backyard.

This is my favorite Stephen King novel. I love horror and I have read a ton of it, including every Stephen King book. I could just picture a lady, maybe like my Mom, digging around in her backyard and finding something interesting back there. So she keeps digging and changing. What she uncovers is something that will keep you fascinated until the end of the book. Don't miss this one, it is the best. Power Path to Love

Although others may disagree with me, I found the Tommyknockers to be my least favorite King book. Not because of the meat of the book which does its job of keeping you glued to the pages but the fact that the end kind of fizzled where usually King's books end with a bang. I find Stephen King to be the master of the imaginary monster and I suppose the reason why it didn't do well for me was because I was not expecting anything about aliens. I was under the impression that we were supposed to be looking under the bed for the monster and not the sky. Perhapes it is that fact which attributes the lowest grade I've ever given a King book. Nonetheless, had I known what to expect, I probably would have enjoyed it more. Either way, I'm glad I read it.

There's a lot of people that don't like this book, and there's a lot that do. I'm one of the latter. In fact, I loved it! This was the first Stephen King book I ever read at the age of 13, and it instantly made me a Constant Reader.
I'm 27 now and have completed 27 of his books, and after recently rereading this one, I can still say it's one of his best. The Tommyknockers has a deliciously campy B-movie story line that is packed with A+ characters. Jim Gardner is da man, even if he is a drunk. The story is really a metaphor for addiction of all kinds. The Tommyknockers grant you the power to turn your vaccum cleaner into a flying weapon, but in turn they take away your soul. King makes subtle comparisons to the government and the military industrial complex with this; super brains that can create all kinds of wonderful gadgets but lack any real humanity or compassion. It is also a metaphor for drug addiction itself, giving you a sense of power and creativity but eating you away at the same time. King has said that he wrote the book when his cocaine addiction was at its worst.
In the thrilling climax, it is the poet Gardner's sense of humanity that saves the day, even though he must make many sacrifices in doing so. The power of love and friendship is his motivating force, as well as his desire to save the very world that he could never find a way to live in. A beautiful story with many weird, funny, warm, terrifying, and exciting moments. I highly reccomend it.

But I think we would all get a little tired of reading various iterations of 'Salem's Lot, or The Stand every time Mr. King wrote a book. The Tommyknockers is solid writing, a bit disorganized and rambling, yes, but solid. I also found the book the be full of the same elements that made Mr. King famous--the horror is here, but in a different context. All in all, its a great read--and an interesting look into King's work as a whole. I think, by now, we have all realized that each of his work is just a piece in the grand scheme of things, and The Tommyknockers provides a few pieces to that puzzle.

Although this book starts out with a very interesting 50 pages or so, it quickly degenerates into what, I suppose, is Mr, King's writing technique: rambling dialogue which focuses on characters who have no significance......stilted descriptions of things which are assumed to be frightening or disgusting......and depictions of bloody violence which seem out of place when assuming that this book has a "theme."
Eventually, King returns to development of the central theme: the discovery of an alien artifact and its effects upon human beings. And the book again takes on life. But anyone who manages to read this work will soon come to the conclusion that it really did not take 700 pages to convey the messages within this non-classic. I believe that the book would have been a much better book if King had eliminated all the blood & gore and maintained some sense of continuity by eliminating all the extraneous characters which he put in (obviously, just to make the book longer).......but I don't believe that King is capable of writing any style other than the one which he has "perfected."
Good start.......poor finish......most thinking readers will be disappointed with the anomalies which are not considered in the seemingly "thrown together" ending. The ending is the most unlikely event which happens......and it destroys any credence which a reader might have given to King up to that point. I would recommend this book for those "die-hard King fans" who delight in nonsensical blood and violence.........I would not recommend it for anyone who believes that writing is a creative mode of sending messages of import........from one human being to another.

Let's suppose that you live in a quiet town in Maine. It's a peaceful life, and the only thing bad that happens around there's an occasional drunken rampage. Then, after someone uncovers some sort of spaceship hidden in the ground, this quiet town that you call your home is taken over by alien life-forms. This is precisely what happens in The Tommyknockers, a book by the great author Stephen King. I will not lie by saying that this is my favorite Stephen King novel, but I truly loved the book. I believe that King did a fantastic job of describing the characters. Bobbi Anderson was not one that I liked, or the country folks of Haven, but my favorite character was Jim Gardener, or better known as "Gard". Gard is an awesome main character, with real-life problems such as alcoholism. Gard spends most of his time getting drunk and having ponderings about stuff like flying tractors and such. Most people see Stephen King as a horror writer, but next to that, I think that his best attribute is his ability to describe his characters as normal people that live in small hick towns, not people like forensics experts or the top-notch detectives.
The only thing that I don't like is that The Tommyknockers has many little side stories, like the life story of Haven constable Ruth McCausland, and how she was eventually ran out of town, or the beginning where it pretty much has Gard sitting in a bar, listening to the leader of his poetry group, Patricia Mcardle, try and hit on some guy in the bar. Other than that, this is one of my favorite books. In conclusion, I think that if you are looking for a good Stephen King novel, read The Tommyknockers.

This is a scary book.
Simply, it's about aliens taking over a small Maine town...mentally.
Many people feel that this is one of King's worst novels, basically one of the worst sci-fi novels, but this was my first novel of Stephen King's that I read and I thought it was very scary and it was very gripping and entertaining and real; the reason why I turned into not only a voracious reader of King's books, but in general, books(and before I absolutely hated and dreaded books. Maybe this book will change your ways. Who knows. It did for me. Doesn't mean it can't do the same for you.) I highly recommend you to read this book. Whether or not, there will inevitably be people who like this book a lot or hate this book a lot. I guess it just depends on the person itself and I can't control that, but either way you should still read this book.
It tells one great, creepy story, and the same with many of King's other books which explains why he is so popular and well-liked.

I'm not really sure as to why there are so many bad reviews in here about The Tommy Knockers! Lately I have been on this Stephen King kick that don't look like it is about to end and I just finished Tommyknockers. I have to say that the book memorized me! The way the whole town was swept up into this corrupt poisoning of what is burried in Bobby Anderson's back yard. I loved the character of Jim Gardner as he had a serious problem of alcoholism, yet was somehow comical. The characters that you were meant to hate, you hated with a passion, and the same with the ones that you loved! I felt that the whole story within the town of Haven resembles our own society with technology going further and further, it seems that we have gone back to the survival of the fittest...or richest, whatever you prefer... I loved this book! So, if you havnt read it, try it! You may just be suprised...

People who are panning this book, I must ask you, what is your problem? The main critique seems to be that the book has no direction. I assume that is because it shifts the focus from the main characters for a huge chunk in the middle, to focus on what's going on in town (the fictional villiage of Haven, ME). But I contend that this is where the book really takes off. I found this novel to be very satisfying, and so far I've read it twice. It's a unique science fiction story, with extremely interesting characters, plot twists, imaginitive situations, genuinely creepy scenes, and not a small amount of humor. I also thought the ending was pretty cool. I really don't understand the negative reviews. What were you people looking for? This one has it all.

Tommyknockers isn't considered one of Stephen Kings best. It does have it's moments. I have read nearly all his books and this one fits in with the whole Stephen King world he has created. If you are observant, you'll catch a glimps of an old favorite clown in the book. And the childs rhyme of the Tommyknockers is clever too. I rate this book with 4 stars cause it's one of the books I'd like to sit down and read through again if i ever get the time.

Well, it is a huge book indeed. I was worried about it keeping my interest, but other than some parts in the middle, the book had me on the edge of my seat. I thought the beginning was very interesting, probably because it's when you are wondering what is going on, how it's going to play out, one of the most suspenseful parts of the book, i think.
This is the first "classic" King book i have read & am looking forward to more!

King has always been impressive. He has taken us on many a scary ride. Dare I say that there is no man, no matter how manly, who wasn't scared when we all knew Danny was going into the hotel room in "The Shining." But Jack Torrance be damned, King has went on a mission to give us a tale of brilliant description, where the town comes alive, and I want to be dead only so that I may put down the book without breaking my heart as I watch the only author to ever scare me fail in an attempt at this horror/sci-fi mishap.
Perhaps I am being to hard on King. So many of his books and novellas have been breathtaking to the point that my expectations have been placed a little too hight. But I doubt that there is a person who has encountered this book who even found the premise the least bit scary. I imagine that this is our own faults for reading this as if it was going to scare us when in reality its point was merely to entertain us.
At its core, the work is a story of a lost man who is trying to put his life back together, and the breakdown of the only woman who could ever help him. The character of Gard is well written and quite funny to follow as he goes through the hurricane nights that land him without a job and penniless on a beach. It is a story of his redemption, of his hope, and of our hope to follow him to the end before the sleepiness sets in.
It is easy to target this book because it is woefully bad if one is expecting a horror story. However, if you merely want something to entertain, a small tail of hope that ends well, then this is the book, just try to imagine it is someone else that King writing it.

Compared to one of his later alien books (*ahem* Dream catcher *ahem*), this book is a masterpiece. Compared to other alien books, written by writers who specialize in it, it's prety standard.
But the aliens aren't the focus of the book - the relationships between the people, with the spaceship as an accelerator of issues that already exist under the surface. This is S. King's specialty, and he does it very well in this book.

I am a huge Stephen King fan, and believe me that I know what I'm talking about. Tommyknockers is one of the poorest stories I read by SK. Why? Well, it is too long, and its lenght does not make up to the mediocre plot. There is little action on those long pages, and when reading it it seems as if you are not going forward, but stuck on the story. I put two stars and not one (or cero) because there are some exciting moments, but very few for an 800 page novel. I do not recommend it at all.
But, still, mine is only a recommendation - with the credit of being a great King fan - that can be not agreed with. When I read a review, I pay attention to what it says, but I never make a decision on it. I don't expect people not to read Tommyknockers because I say I didn't like it. Everyone should read it so they can see if I am right, only after reading it people will be able to decide if I'm saying nonsense or not. I think most people won't like it either. This review has the only aim to help someone who is trying to decide what to read by King. This should be your 15th SK book, and by no means read it as your first SK book. Besides, it is hardly scary, some parts are if you pushed me, but I wouldn't agree much. For those looking for a scary book from "The master of horror", go first for 'SALEM'S LOT, THE DARK HALF, THE SHINING, BAG OF BONES, and for just GREAT stories, THE GREEN MILE, THE DEAD ZONE and oh... so many others!!!

This isn't his worst bookbut it certainly isn't his best. If your looking for his best go read his earlier works like The Shining or Salem's Lot. This book first of all was much too long and not much happens in the first half but once you get to that point it really picks up there. I will give this one four stars.

This was my second King novel and I hope it's not a portent of things to come, because this novel really does suck. It is overly drawn out, long-winded, _____________ (insert any word that conveys a sense of boredom & time slipping away). The great moments are too few and far between. The last 200 pages, as the story picks up, are exciting and humorous in places, but the mid-section of the book is a dreadful bore.
I'd pass this one up, unless you are a die hard Stephen King fan.

This was the first King novel I read. I was about ten or so and as the book's very long I was mighty proud when i was finished, although I didn't like the story that much. When I read it again five years later I could hardly put it down. This is a great novel, enchanting, exciting and very scary. Perhaps his second best novel ("Misery" is my favourite) and a step in the right direction. Read it and see for yourself.

Having reread this book as I have nothing to do but lay sick in bed I thought I'd expose some thoughts.
This is an interesting book with a cool concept that fails in its execution. King has some problems with endings, lately all the King books I have read start flat out great and end terribly bad. It also has some plot holes the size of its shiny flying saucer. As in: If metal protected you from the whatever influence of the ship, why no one thought of using a helmet? I mean, the people trying to enter the town, and the same tommyknockers that were so interested in the excavation but that couldn't stand working on it for two days in a row. They bothered burying Anne's car, instead of simply sending it to Altair-4. Also, the dolls that spoke to Ruth were AGAINST the ship (they wanted to send a signal to the other towns) so that didn't make sense at all. The story about the reporters was completely unnecessary (in fact the second time I read that book I just skipped it). They never quite explain why they were using Peter and the rest of the guys in the shed. Human batteries? Why didn't they use the rest of the guys they killed like that too? And why was Bobbi put in the shed, in one of the shower cubicles, after she was shot? In short, too many questions unanswered or making no sense at all. A good ending and a good editing could have saved this book.

There is no real way to describe this book . . . except for incredible. Although it has no social meaning, it still means something . . . something . . . incredible. The ending is great, and although is sags in the middle, the final chapter is riveting. King masterfully wrote this; when the action gets intense, and something BIG is happening, he ends the chapter. You turn the page, unimaginably excited, your eyes glued to the paper, and, as if he did it on purpose JUST to enrage you, he changes the scene. I had never picked up a book, thrown it on the floor, and shouted at the top of my lungs before until I read this. The first part makes you care, the second part makes you wonder, and the third part--I won't ruin it for you. I am a VERY light reader, and it typically takes me tow or three days to finish 100 pages, but I finished the last part-300 pages-in four hours. It's that good. One bit of caution to light readers out there like me: IT IS LONG. VERY LONG. 750 pages is not my idea of an enjoyable experience (I'm only (...)), but, middle part aside, you will never want to put this book down. Ever. Buy it now.
*I did not reveal any of the story to you because it is a) too complex to tell in one or two sentences, and b) I don't want to ruin it for you. Just get it.

King creates a gripping tale of an unusual invasion in a small Maine town. He provides backgrounds for nearly every character introduced while still maintaining a nail-biting, page-turning, completely enthralling quality book. Our main character stumbles(literally) over a metal object buried in the woods on her property. She is called to it and begins to unearth it while undergoing physical and mental mutations. Soon the rest of the town becomes effected with startling and terrifying results. Excellent book.

I have been a lover of Stephen King for years, and with Tommyknockers he was able to take what began with a childish rhyme and end it with a horror that hit you deep in the gut. Terrifying and yet deeply personal, the book gets you into the ordinary lives of the main characters and then exposes the extraordinary horror that seems to always exists literally just below the surface.
This goes on my list of top 20 King books, and if you give it a fair chance, I think you will definitely agree.

I am an avid fan of King. I can't say that I've read every single work of his, but I've read many of them. I seriously doubt that I will ever again be as absolutely creeped out as I was during the 3 weeks I spent reading this story. It remains the only story to consistently carry over into my dreams night after night while I was reading it, and for a short while after.
I read one review that puts down the story for the 'depressing' outcomes for the characters. I agree that things don't necessarily turn out the way most people would hope they do, but I don't believe that to be a negative aspect of the story. Thats part of what made this book have such an effect on me! The utterly diabolical force that infected the townspeople, and anyone else who came near, was terrifying. I felt like this book started out somewhat eerie, and just slowly kept creeping and creeping on me until I was completely appalled at what was happening. Because of Kings unique writing style, even the imagery of seemingly 'tame' scenes comes through as wickedly disturbing (ie. scenes when the 'leaders' of Haven get together in a room for a meeting and not a single word is spoken aloud). In addition, I really felt sympathy for the characters who were so helplessly corrupted by this force.
Although a few parts seemed to drag a bit, at the end I realized these to be a vital contribution to the overall effectiveness of the story. The climax is spectacular, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to become engulfed in a truly fascinating tale.

I've always loved Stephen King's style of writing because he gets you a little bit used to the characters before he starts putting them into difficult situations. However, this particular piece is not his normal set up. He starts off with one of the main characters stumbling over a conflict right away, and he paints a broad vista of her (and other people's) characters as they encounter situations and you begin to see their human-ness. You keep reading not only because of the plot itself, but because you want to know more about this character or that one, and you want to identify with them. Although not one of King's characteristic works, definitely one of his good ones.

Tommyknockers was a great book, I really enjoyed it. Here, I'll tell ya about it.
When Bobbi finds a strange object in the woods, she gets a little obsessed about digging it up. Like forgetting to eat or sleep, when her friend, Jim or Gard as she calls him, comes to see here, she is really sick. He takes care of her, but after a while he notices that strange things are starting to happen to the rest of the town.

I did not like this book. I thought it was very long winded writing and probably should have been half the length that it was. Stephan King for some reason has a fascination with women's menstrual cycles and it seemed out of place in this book. I absolutely loved The Shining and The Long Walk, but this book was very boring.

I am such a huge fan of SK that it even bothers me to write this review. If I could give it 0 stars I would. How sad that SK had to write something so incredibly bad. I have been reading his books since High School, and I'm 34 now, I actually read this book when it was first published and I have shunned it ever since. If you are thinking of reading SK for the first time go to The Stand, IT or if you want something a little less in length go with Firestarter. Just stay away from this meaningless book.

Tommyknockers has to be one of Kings GREATEST Books of all time. Where do I even begin? I love Bobbi and especially the endearing alcholic writer "Gard". The townspeople are great. The alien takeover is realistic and so so creepy. A spooky "discovery" in the woods, mysterious inventions, and a talking plastic Jesus combine to make this absolutley AWESOME. I can't say enough great things about it!

Bobbi Anderson has stumbled onto something big. What she has discovered is a spaceship. This spaceship ends up changing and killing every one in the town she lives in and would have destroyes the world if her dear friend (who she had tried to kill) had not stoped it. This book shows how Bobbi Anderson goes from being a shy author to a sick and twisted alien. This book is a must read for everyone!

ok, first off I will begin by saying that i could not manage to force myself to finish this book, as i did for The Stand and The Shining. So if by chance the story took a magical upturn in style, coehisiveness, plot developing that actually makes sense, and even better use of language then I give the benefit of a doubt that it deserves 1 1/2 star, so that is why i give it 2 stars in my review. Basically if you have never read ANY of this book i would say it should be placed in the 0 - 1 catagory, the 1 being that King actually did try to write a story.
I confess that i have an inner hatred for horror fiction that spawns from the depths of my soul, so it is very hard for me to open my mind to anything that trys to be 'scary' of 'freaky'. infact only H.P. Lovecraft can be credited as an actual author in my opinion when it comes to these types of books, where as i think that stephen king still needs to practice his writting in order to win an young authors award of some sort, a 6th grader could write better and i had the same vocabulary presented in this book at the latest of 5th grade.
let's see... this book is comprised of chopped up sentences, a great deal of them being fragments, alot of swear words are used and i find that most of them are not even neccessary for any character development of thought (swearing is not the only way to make a book 'darker' god damnit!), one of the only times real avid descriptions are used is during the randomly placed cut scene where a guy shoots his dad because of really detailed disturbing memories of incest (king has to have at least one rape, fornication, or incest action in his stories...)
i dont only condemn the book because of that for we all know that editors can not be perfrect, nor can authors. but what king could of done to actually of made a good story was to try and tie everything together better, for example what does a talking picture of jesus and a man shooting his dad for incest memories have to do with a spaceship being dug up by a mind controlled woman in a forest? and with the parts he does describe such as the dogs actions and developments, he cuts to a scene of a poet reading a half assed poem (does king not like poetry?) and when we go back to the scene with the dog we find that its been dead for quite sometime and no real further details are made to any explenations onto why the author felt he had to rush the time for these scenes. he definently could of taken his time because the book was heading nowhere. but then again maybe with an extra 400 pages or so there would still be alot of unanswered questions to ask yourself, like "why did i waste my money on this book?". i bought this at a retail shop, another reason why not to look for good literature in 2nd hand stores

This is a nice throwback to 50s style "Big Bug" horror shows: some unknown technology alters the natural order. Some of the paranoia of Body Snatchers picks at you as everyone really seems to be a bit different. The scenes where outsiders try to deal with the mutating natives are great. Science fiction, in that old, the aliens are out to kill us all, tradition. Good pulp fiction.

There's a lot of filler in this book, but the meat of it is King at 80% his best. That of course is still wonderful and worth giving this a read, but I would not consider reading through it again like I do The Shining or Needful Things or a few other of his novels. A bright spot is the rewarding ending. If you're a fan of King and want to read all his stuff then there is no reason to skip out on this but you probably won't find it to be your favorite.

THis book is truly intriguing. A woman stumbles upon a metal object while walking her dog, and out of curiosity, digs it up, not knowing that it's a giant ancient ship. Then, something happens. the townspeople of haven start to become geniuses, and gain power beyond mortals, making the town a deathtrap. the townspeople start transforming. transforming into a long lost race of aliens. into The tommyknockers. This book is a Must Read!

This a very original book, but it just plain sucks. If you awnt good Stephen King you read "Desperation" or "Christine". They just are better books. I just hope it wasn't ment to be scary because it wasn't. It took me a long time to finnish this, because it was so boring. My recomendations are Desperation, Christine, the Shining, or the Dark Tower Books.

You either love this book or you hate it. If you are looking for classic Stephen King, I suggest you read this book with caution. It is more sci-fi than horror. His description give it horror qualities but his storyline give it sci-fi qualities. I did like this book because it was a change of pace for him. The Tommyknockers knock on!

The Tommyknockers is not your typical horror novel. Stephen King goes above and beyond our expectations, bringing us mystery, suspense, and an incredible twist at the end that leaves us begging for more. You'll never look at small towns the same after visiting the seemingly innocent community of Haven, Maine, where the story takes place. The superhuman powers and horror that follows after Bobbi Andersons shocking discovery on her property will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire novel. Though the length of the book may seem intimidating at first, do not be deterred; it's an easy read, a constant page turner, and worth every minute! Much like the outsiders around the town of Haven, once you get in to explore the Tommyknockers, there will be no turning back.

The Tommyknockers was a pretty good book. I think, though, that this would be a bad book for someone reading King for the first time. It wasn't scary, but was more creepy. In fact, I consider it to be more of a sci-fi novel than a horror story. If you want a scary King read, choose something more like The Shining.

This wasn't my favorite Stephen King novel. While it kept me interested, it was not riveting and I actually quit reading halfway through to read something else only to come back to it a month or so later.
The story begins following two characters more or less to about halfway through, then these characters are dropped and a bunch of new characters are introduced who I had not developed a relationship with or cared about. This sudden change in POV seemed rather abrupt.
The ending was disappointing for me because *spoiler alert* the aliens were all dead and never resurrected.
For Stephen King's writing ability I give it two stars because he is a bestselling author and I expected more from him. If this was a first novel, I probably would have given it three stars.

It took me two attempts to finish this book...I wish I had given up the first time. Everything is so over written here that it could easily fit into a novella if King didn't have dierhea of the word processor. To his credit there are some neat sci-fi things in the book, like the inventions and powers that people get from being in contact with the space-ship, but there is little else worth reading.
There are many frustrating scenes of buildups to scares that just fail to be scary. More than once, this book hooked me with the promise of earth shattering revelations or unberable horror around the corner, and then just fizzled out and started building the next scene. To clairify, in this story SK tells you "there's something scary out there," then leaves it up to you to creep yourself out about it. However, once you get to that "scary thing out there," it's just a trick of light. He offers no real horrors here.
It's also really strange to me how he has to put so many possible reasons for the supernatural in his books. This one has the obvious UFO, but he also mentions an indian burial ground, ghosts from mines, all he needed to do to cover all the basses would be to add vampires and telepathy. Odd. Most of these explainations have nothing to do with the story that is going on. So, they just make it longer and more boring.
The worst is the ending. King doesn't have the best record with endings, but this one takes the cake. It is definately not worth reading a novel this long to get to this crappy ending. In fact it's not worth reading at all, because there is little on the way to the ending that is enjoyable.
Had I not read this after some of King's better works (The Stand, It, The Shining, Green Mile..) I would've stopped right away. From his other, better works, I assumed that this long buildup of characters was going to pay-off at some point. At his best King can make enjoyable epics with a large cast of characters. This is not his best, skip it. Don't make my mistake...just walk away.

Stephen King has done it for the 30-something-ith time. The Tommyknockers is not only one of my favorite Stephen King books--it's one of my favorite books. The first 100 pages are among the most boring things I've ever read, but once past that, I couldn't put it down. Stephen King took what I consider a boring and over-used premise (aliens) and turned it into a masterpiece. He is in the elite group of novelists who can do that.

I could go on to explain why I don't like this book and save you from having to read it, but I don't know where to begin. I loved Carrie, but this is a huge let down. I don't know why people think this is one of King's best works. My god this this is one of the worst books I have ever read in my life. On the plus side, the novel does start out nicely, but sadly it all goes downhill into a spiral of aliens and random; pointless events. The plot makes no sense when one closely examines it and that is what is the biggest let down. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

I know I will probably take some shots for this, but as a huge Stephen King fan I found this book to be the worst he ever wrote and the only one I didn't finish. Simply put, what a great book this was. I just finished ittoday. It was my 7th complete Stephen King book. I can't believe howfast I went through it. I went through all 747 pages in a little less than 3 weeks. It was so intense to read. The description was great. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. For those who think that all of Stephen King's books are completely horror books and that's why you don't read them, well, you're wrong. This was hardly scary at all. To start off I have read many of Stephen King's books and till this day none of them have ever ever let me down: The Shining, Carrie, It, Pet Semetaty, 'Salem's Lot, Bag of Bones, Dreamcatcher,Dead Zone, Green Mile, etc. I've read all of those and more. Never have I disliked a King novel until this one.
Unlike most people people I found the first 200-300 pages the most intriguing. After that I just felt like he was droning on, and I've never felt that with his writing. Even with "It", which was a full 1,080 pages long, I was never bored. Tommyknockers was boring.
A major problem I had was TOO many characters. IT was really hard to keep track of all of them. Also, I felt like he was keeping us in the "blue" about many things. I didn't like it. For instance, the people's "becoming". He kept referring to it, but for the longest time he doesn't tell us what in the world he means. Also, the green in the shed. He was keeping the reader hidden from things and it wasn't fun.
For the only time ever I felt as if Stephen King was really wordy. I mean, "It" is very long, but never ever really too wordy. It was always interesting. This time around King hiy a sour note. To sum this novel up...Don't waste your time with this nonsense, ever.

After reading Insomnia, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and Bag of Bones, I was jonesing for the next SK book to read. I picked up Tommyknockers. This book took me a while longer to read. I just couldn't get into the plot. All of the digging, and the high-tech machinery detail kindof curbed my interest. Not to mention the lack of likeable characters. Gardner was the most likeable, but I do not care to read about him again. The conclusion was entertaining. But, this is one of those that I may pass along rather than keep for my collection.

This has to be one of the best books I have ever Read, from the part where Gard is attacking the Nuclear Technician to where he is thrown out of the house-party. I just love Stephen King's graphic description of everything, he has a way with words alright...... One of my other favorite parts is where That lady (mind slip) was in the Clocktower/bell-tower and the bats attacked her and threw her down the steps and building exploded..... they also repaired it with a Hologram!
From the Storage-Space Altair-4 to the Excavation of the Space-Ship, This was the best book I have ever read!

I really thought this was a pretty good book. I am a Stephen King fan, and this is a good one. I won't go on about how great it is, or how much better he could have done (I think thats for people who don't have good taste) But if you like supernatural, great exitement, I seriously reccomend this book to you. The suspense, action, and mystery starts early in the book, wich kept me reading until the wee hours. And whats more, you think there is absolutely no hope for a good ending as you get deeper into the book, so it's a real surprise (As with all of his stupendous novels) I personally loved it, and I hope you do too if you buy it.

Like a lot of King novels, this book starts out interestingly enough. Bobbi Anderson ( like most of King's characters)is an author from King's home state. I find it hilarious that he never seems to deviate from this! For once I'd like to see King write about someone different than himself.
Aside from this pattern, the story begins with said character walking her dog to discover a UFO sticking out of the ground. It quickly causes problems with her dog and her own health, and she begins to dig in a frenzied effort to unearth the mysterious craft. Not long after, we transition to Gard, a strung out poet/alcoholic who is obsessed with (if I remember correctly) nuclear plants. After a strange scene at a party, he finally finds his way to his long lost friend and former lover Bobbi, because he senses something is wrong. No real reason, just sensed it.
He arrives at her home to find she has become a genius, capable of building contraptions that can type what she thinks, and soon the entire town is full of such genius. Oh yeah, and everyone seems to be losing their teeth...strange.
I stopped reading this book with about 250 pages to go because I felt like it was going in circles. As always the characters were interesting, but that only lasted so long. Once they were under the influence of the strange UFO powers, they became drones.
Not one of his best, I am still waiting to be into one of his books the way I was into the Shining....

I read this book in the seventh grade...my first of Stephen's (a close neighbor of mine at the time). Since then I must have read a hundred of his other works, but this one is the best: fantasy, sci-fi, horror and genius imagination not woven, rather melted together. Yeah, it's long, yeah, they dig for a long time, but the drudgingness of the couple's labor just adds to the physical experience of the reading. It actually makes you exhausted (to be even more virtually worn out read "the long walk"). It's best read on a HOT summer day with nothing on your mind.

Well... what can I say? There were some technical matters in the book that put me off. There was the place when they were talking about a garden tractor and mentioned the "husky 4 cc engine. 4cc is about the size of a model airplane engine. And a not very big one either. Then there was the old man's gun. It seemed to flip-flop between being a revolver and an automatic. But i think this might have just been a slip of the pen. He mentioned there being 4 rounds in the chamber. I think he meant in the clip. However, King's made mistakes like this before - lack of continuity. Then too there is the matter of the saucer. He kept reiterating how huge it was. However he said the circumfrence was about 300 yards (estimated). Thats only about 100 yards in diameter. Thats only about the length of a football field - hardly titanic. Later on in the book I think the size was estimated up to about 200 yards across. Twice as big but still not in the titanic range. Also when Bobbi was making the sketch to estimate the size, I think it would have been impossible to draw it to scale on a pad of paper and compute the size. At that time I think they only had a chord of 20 or 30 feet. the drop would have been only a couple of inches for a circumference of 300 yards. I guess King must have been asleep in geometry class when they were talking about the circle. Well anyway - the book was OK. I think King should stick with horrer & leave the science fiction to people that know science.

A great book, interesting (desipite the plot holes); But I'll echo what the fellow said about King's endings needing work. My biggest complaint is that it should have been about 50 to 100 pages shorter at the end. Every thought and nuance of movement was described in the climatic scene. Let it end already!

I enjoyed the book. But I'll have to admit that in some parts it just drags on, and on. In other words it goes into too much detail. I really liked the characters in this book also. The book is also a little confusing though. (In my opinion)

The book was good. It was the first King novel I have ever read and it got me totally addicted to his novels. The story totally lets your imagination run wild. Who cares if he doesn't tell you where the aliens came from. Thats what makes the novel mysterious. The little side stories were part of the big picture. A big part of this story is the effect that the ship had on the towns people since the begining. It seams like the people who talk bad about this book don't know how to appreciate anything but the tail end of the story and they get annoyed at having to understand the whole thing.

It starts kind of slow, but when it picks up (around pg. 20) you can really get hooked on it. If you are in the mood to read a great book, and have already read The Stand,IT,and The Eyes of the Dragon, then I strongly recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book. While it was long, and a bit slow at parts, there were always plenty of interesting things going on. All the characters were well written, as is usually the case with King, and the plot was interesting.

I really loved this book so I guess that makes me a true 'KING' fan but the only part I didn't like about the book was when Gardner pulled out one of his teeth just so he could have Billie ( ??) that was sooooo stupid !!

This novel is so abstract it is amazing. I read it down at the beach a few summers ago, and have read it twice since then. King, as usual, creates a town and then abruptly destroys it, though before destroying it he develops a relationship between you and the town. A relationship between you and the characters. It has the struggling alcoholic poet, the struggling isolated author, and a mysterious "gem" that lurks in the forest. For some it may be too "Stephen Kingish" such as Pet Semetary (remember the baby?), but to anybody out there who enjoys an otherworldly horror/science fiction story, this one is for you.

This is a story of a great tradegy with really no bad guys. It was one of the most saddest books I have ever read. This book has made me into a die hard Stephen King fan and I am definately glad I bought this book!

Stephen King's fame is such that he could slap his name on the cover of the New York City phone directory and people would read it from cover to cover, then give it rave reviews. The fact that the Tommyknockers has managed to find an audience proves my point. The Tommyknockers is a bloated, horrible novel lacking in just about everything you look for in a great read.
The worst part about reading this book is knowing that King is capable of so much more. It's hard to grasp the fact that this meandering drivel was written by the same author who can write the kind of tense, economical, finely crafted prose you'll find in stories like "Rage." King's best work is also his most believable, and unfortunately The Tommyknockers strays just about as far from believability as you can get.
If you're new to King, do yourself a favor and begin with something like the Bachmann Books. This one will leave an awful taste in your mouth. If you're a rabid King fan and want to be able to say that you've read everything he's ever written, well, go ahead and read it. But don't say you weren't warned.

I'm clearly behind in my reading when I pick up a King book from the 80's that I haven't read. This was a great book and while it reads like a King book the story has a bit of a sci-fi slant that I have not really read in him much before. The characters, while a lot of them, were really well developed and engrossing. I'm sorry that it took me this long to finally read it.

In Tommyknockers King has brought two old friends together at a time when they can truly love one another. But as they begin to fall in love Bobby is getting drawn deeper into obsession with a miraculous find.
Soon the entire town is drawn into the obsession, building contraptions that work by unknown means and using normal batteries to run them.
This book grabs hold of you and pulls you into it, making you unable to let it go until you have finished the very last word.
The title of my review says it all: definately one of Stephen King's best.

If you're looking for a book to hook you in, keep you turning the pages, emotionally connecting to the characters, read "Harry Potter". A friend suggested I start reading King with this book. Oy...what the hell was he on? It wasn't awful, just so disappointing. I appreciated the writing, but I wasn't enjoying this book on any level. It's in bad need of editing, but that's too late. Should have been half the length. Read something else.

I read this book long ago and i didn't like it too much mainly cuz it was boring for the first 150 pages or so. And the story had a bad ending that was just blah. Not a typical King ending.
There are better King's reading than this lame excuse.

This is a good book, Stephen King is an amazing author who writes amazing books and this is no exception. It's not his best or most famous work but 'good' from King is head and shoulders above most other authors. The book is a little slow starting out but a few chapters in I was hooked and reading it whenever I could. I recommend it highly.

I am a big King fan, and have read many of his books. They are usually great but this is poor. Bobby Anderson, a quiet women living on a farm in the peaceful town of Haven, stumbles over an object in the woods. Curious, she begins to dig it up, and it begins to change a town of good-natured people into slave-like zombies. Stupidly overlong and sleep-inducingly dull at points, this ridiculous tale about (among other things) aliens, flying tractors, guns that warp people to other planets and battery powered water heaters is daft as hell. King normally gets around this problem by developing great characters, but the book skitters between them far too much to allow you to start caring about them. There are some compelling points (such as the first stages of the chaos that erupts in the town, and Gards first look at the inside of the shed) but they are quickly forgotten thanks to a silly, over-the-top sci-fi sequence or a dull sub-plot. Kings attempt at doing a dated 60's B-movie has not worked, and the result is a tedious read that pushes you through the pages more often than it sucks you in.

Tommyknockers was truly (and still is) an interesting horror for me. I like the way Stephen King took each character and described what was happening with them. I felt like I was there. As a matter of fact, I started reading this book in 1994 or 95 and I still have a good 150-200 pages to read....not that's its slow to read because its a very good book, it just plain scared me and I put it down and haven't picked it back up....I plan to do so soon ~ keep them coming stephen!

Ever wondered what happens when you drive through a town
and you get violently sick and your teeth come out when
you puke because you breathe the air, unknowingly, killing
yourself? Ever think why that woman you just passed didn't
have the two shapely lumps of normal breasts, but one big
bulge? Why did she have no teeth? How come pilots avoid the
area of Haven, Maine. Why did that clocktower's hands look
drawn on? The mysteries of aliens are faithfully represented
in King's great novel, The Tommyknockers!

As you will see in the other reviews of this book, you either love or hate this novel. Personally I think it's the best king book i've read, actually I can't decide if I like IT better or not. If your not a sci-fi person you won't like this title. But if your into it, this is by far as good as you can get. I don't reccomend the movie version though, it was really really bad.

How anyone can call this garbage is beyond me. King has succeeded in blowing me away again.
With such believable characters (Bobby Anderson and Jim Gardner, aka 'Gard'), and with scenery set up in such a lively fashion, it is beyond me how a King fan could not enjoy this book.
Granted things appear to build a bit slowly, but that just keeps you hooked untl the last page!
Overall an amazing book that I think any King fan would absolutely adore.

I am about the same age as Stephen King and have read his works throughout my adult life. I think most readers are too young to appreciate this book.
Stephen King's early works, assembelled in chronological order, are all symbolic stories of stages in his own life. "Carrie" is about high school, "Salem's Lot" about love and loss in early adulthood, "The Shining" about the anxieties of fatherhood. "It" is about the reworking of childhood issues in mid-life. All great fiction talks to us on a subconcious level.
"Tommy Knockers" is about aging and death. Time possesses and mutates all of us, makes our teeth and hair fall out, truncates our dreams, makes us unrecognizable from our youthful selves. This is a sad book, and unlike King's earlier works the protagonists have no power to fight such an enemy. Affirming the value of love, however futile, in the face of death is the point of the book.

I love all of King's books and always get so involved in the stories and characters that I think about them long after I finish reading them, like they are real people. Jim Gardener, Bobby and especially her sister will stay on my mind for a long time. I'm not even sure why, but these people seemed more real than the ones I know in real life. The story enthralled me, even though I am not into anything si-fi or relating to outer space. But that is King for you. He will draw you in, no matter what the subject matter, and make you a believer. This is his best book, and I have read all his books. It doesn't get any better than this.

This book is Ok. However, it is silly to consider it as a creepy horror novell. This book is a composition of Dostoevskiy's ability to keep story events developing pretty slow, whlie filling the pages with a tremendous amount of text, and a few drops of 2nd freshness horror. I have read the whole book although sometimes it got really boring.

Stephen King keeps amazing me with every book. His writing style shows what he is all about. He can develop many characters and ideas on hundreds of pages until finally reaching the main point. The Tommyknockers is an outstandingly written book which even though doesn't arrive at the main point for a long time, keeps you reading. At times I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it!

This book got boring after a while. Sure, it's exciting in the starting with the digging up of the spaceship and the end also, but in between King just goes on about little side stories about things happening to the people of the town, which were mostly boring and time-consuming. If you want to read this book, read a shortened edition without all the useless information in the middle.

King's worst book ever--and I am a huge fan. THis one is long, slow, unbelievable (and unbelievably boring). Not at all scary. Filled with images of the "Stephen King Green" kind- - - an eerie fluorescent green glow---that wears thin almost immediately. Read something else: QUICK!!!

The Tommyknockers is worth all 747 pages of reading. Of the work of King's that I've read, it was easily the most enjoyable and terrifying. There's something about fashioning highly advanced technology out of household items that I just can't get enough of. --JM at maxpages.com/LINKCONNECTION

I thought this book was good but a little out of this world. I might only be 15 but i have read alot of science fiction novels. This one takes the cake for wierdness. Tommyknockers is a strange change of pace for King. This book is science-fiction, but King is obviously known for horror. Nevertheless, this is a great book. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors, and his Dark Tower series is some of the most amazing fiction I've ever read. But this book should have been about 200 pages shorter, and the concept needed a lot of work. ...but this book made me give up King for life. I just didn't wanna invest so much of my time into a bad book ever again.
It would have been nice if the editor had caught the fact that King lost track of whether the aliens control people with radio waves or a gas. As it is, either a metal plate in your head or a gas mask will protect you. Maybe it's radio gas?

I am questioning if Stephen King even wrote this book. Humm its not bad if you can look past the lack of direction,...poor character development, and waste of human life it would take to give this standstill a read. I made it through 450 pages. Then my
teeth started to fall out and I had a compulsion
to go out in the yard and start digging!!!! This was
pretty silly and redundant. Same, same, same, page
after page after page after page. Probably could have
boiled away all of the excess and ended up with a decent
book of about ?? 200 ?? pages or so. This book should
have been beamed to ALTAIR-4.
