Jim Knighthorse is searching for Elvis. Well, not really, but close – he has been hired to determine if recent sightings of Freddie Calgary, a former child star, are legitimate. They shouldn’t be valid since Freddie was found dead two years ago. However, no autopsy was performed, the body was cremated prior to family being allowed to view the body and the pronouncing doctor has died in a mysterious auto accident. Therefore, the possibility that Freddie is still alive exists, at least in the mind of Freddie’s agent.

One day after the agent hires Knighthorse, the agent is brutally murdered. Even though Jim accepted a retainer, he legally has no case to pursue now that his client is dead. But because Jim accepted that retainer, he feels morally obligated to finish the job.

J. R. Rain writes a complex character doing a complex job. Knighthorse is physically large, physically fit and has a keen intelligence. He also has one leg held together by six pins and, if he is not an alcoholic already, he is teetering so close to that edge that the barest breath could push him over. And he has good reason to believe that Jack, the homeless man who has coffee with him at McDonald’s, is the physical incarnation of God.

If Rain had just stuck to action suspense with supernatural overtones, this would have been a 5-star entry – and about 30 pages shorter. As written, however, this story is a hodgepodge of current events, memories of past events from previous novels, tie-ins to events written into other Rain novels and series, and general emotional bloodletting. Details of some of the past events are repeated multiple times and several psychological issues are pursued repeatedly.

In the end, it felt as if Rain was using these previously published events and the repetitive browbeating to fill space and add length. Rain has recently, and publically, announced that he will cease writing his series and will concentrate on writing short stories. Perhaps, if he can dispense with the flashbacks and the repetitions, he will succeed.

I quickly devoured the latest in the Jim Knighthorse series, Clean Slate. I absolutely love this character. Jim Knighthorse is a narcissistic bad ass, smart ass, and sometimes just an ass. The kind of guy you could picture your self having a beer, or 9, with. Jim works fast and solves mysteries fast. J.R. Rain's writing is the same, quick and to the point, no beating around the bush here. I have read other of Rain's works, but this series is definitely my favorite. Keep up the great work, can't wait for the next one.

I thought I would like the book because the characters and theme seemed interesting. The main character Jim Knighthorse has such a big EGO and it resonated all throughout the book. This was irritating to me. Some comments were humorous but the other comments were overdone. I would have given the book more stars but the EGO trait brought the rating down.

J.R. Rain brings Jim Knighthorse to life again in what is the fastest moving and hardest hitting story in this series. Jim battles his alcoholism, disbelief and rage, while still putting together clues leading to another case solved. Jack makes a wonderful reappearance and does much to comfort Jim, all while performing miracles. Although we see a rougher side to Knighthorse in this story, he remains a loving and caring companion to Cindy and Junior. Definitely a must-read for anyone who enjoys skillful story lines, carefully crafted characters and fast-paced action.

Jim Knighthorse lives in my hometown and it is wonderful to read about all the old stomping grounds and be able to picture everything perfectly. I especially love the conversations with Jack. Can't wait for the next one!

In this book Knighthorse is hired by a Hollywood agent. The agent thinks one of his client who died of an overdose and died is back from the living. Jim looks into the case and tries to figure if the clues he has is really from the missing client. Another good book in the series. I just his humor and wit in this series

This was one of the best Jim Knighthorse stories. Don't get me wrong. They have all been good. In this case, Jim is hired to see if a famous actor who was presumed dead is really alive. People around the case are dying. What the heck is going on?

Love this guy! Love his sense of right and wrong, his relationships with his girlfriend, his friends and his dog and of course, with Jack. This is not your average detective! I appreciate his (mostly) positive relationship with the boys in blue and the way they trade insults. Its so fun when he distracts his enemies with wisecracks and puts the beat down on them! Way to go Knighthorse!

Jim Knighthorse, the ace private investigator, has a witty, masculine, yet humble personality. He's a good person, but will take care of "bad" people when necessary. There's always a mystery to solve. The secondary characters and their influences are some of the best parts of the story. I especially love Jack, the homeless bum that may be "God". Also, the author's sense of humor shows up. An example is toward the end of the story with the detective named Christian Gray. Loved it! Give us more Jim Knighthorse!

This is the third of the Knighthorse mystery series and is the usual fair for the group.
Defective man, performs equally as questionable acts in the line of his work. Yet has redeeming qualities. He is honest, true, loves his Mamma and all things downtrodden (see book before this one)
I am going to read the next book just so I can say I finished the bunch but I feel Mr. Knighthorse should tone down some on his bravado or God might take back his miracle.
This is a good read for late teens or someone who needs some light reading on the plane or at the beach.

Another great couple of hours spent with Jim Knighthorse! He's a smart, caring, irreverent P.I. committed to the cases he takes on - and oh the complexity of those cases. He's self-deprecating, irreverent and cocksure of himself . . . all at the same time. He has philosophical talks at MacDonald's with a friend, a "bum", who just may be God, and, on this case, certainly seems to be.

I can't wait for the next Jim Knighthorse book. I need another fix!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed clean slate. It was a really interesting twist on this type of story. While continuing to solve the case he was hired for he also solved a missing person and a death that was supposed to be an accident but really wasn't. He also saved a young girls life in the process. I also like Jack's involvement in the case and other aspects. I won't give anything away, but it was really good. The ending was also really good too. If you've read the other Jim Knighthorse stories, I think you'll really enjoy this one.

If you have never read the Knighthorse series by J.R. Rain then you are missing out on dry humor and suspense. He makes me think Magnum PI, Rockford Files, and Inspector Clousseau decided to collaborate on a book together about their cases. Just read it and enjoy the egotiscal private eye in all his investigating glory.

This latest in the series does not disappoint! Jim Knighthorse is as conceited, gritty and loveable as ever. Fast paced and focused, with enough plot twists to keep you turning the pages until the end, J.R. Rain tells the tale like only he can. And then there is Jack - what a guy!

Ack! This book lets us experience the drawback of self publishing. No respectable publisher in a developed country would have published this drivel. The storyline is convoluted and laughable; suspend belief, ignore any police procedural you've read, and wait for the occult. Yep, the self admitted thuggish, former linebacker PI is befriended by a local seemingly homeless person who can peer deep into the PI's persona and is also prescient, sharing his wisdom as he and the PI drive around.
The PI kills two evil thinking, but not yet acting thugs because he hates them. He then confesses to the police who agree those bad guys needed killing. "It's ok, we just won't bring it up again"
The perp is found dancing naked with a stinking year old rotting corpse held together with latex tape.
C'mon, any HS sophomore can write better than this.

The fourth book in Rain's Knighthorse series is well worth the wait! Knighthorse is a cocky as ever and encounters some very profound experiences in this installment. Set aside an afternoon/evening, pop some corn, and enjoy the entertainment!

I really like the Knighthorse series - as with all of JR Rain's other characters. I especially like how the author weaves other characters from different series into the books - it really pulls me into the characters!
Love this author!
