Engaging story of a youngster who assumes a man's responsibilities on the New England frontier in colonial days. Befriended by indians, the protaganist comes to understand how the arrival of the white settlers spells the end of the indians' way of life.

Wasn't crazy about the forward. Read this book with 5th grade class before everything was politically correct and we discussed any issues as we read it or after we finished the book. Think the forward should be at the end of the book!

While I can understand the criticisms of this book being a bit stereotypical, its not a horrible book and most targeted readers would enjoy it. Rather than denounce a book because its paints a portrait that you disagree with, use it as a discussion tool. I think the author did a fine job portraying life during this time period. The quality writing and storyline make it a solid four-star children's book. Recommended.

A well-written book with historical facts built in and presented in a way a 10 year old child will understand. Children will be able to develop an understanding of not only the life of settlers, but also the feeling evoked by the Native Indians as they were being pushed off their land. Great book.

this book has definitely exceeded my expectations, which were it being a boring book, but it is a interesting and engaging read. I really liked that the book had lots of little twists and how much emotion is put through it. the plot is excellent too!

This book gets better and better every time I read it. I feel that the details may put you in the setting and Paul you in to the time and story line of this book. Anyone looking to read this book should because it changes the way you think about times then and now this book shows you how to live without all the high-tech stuff we have today.
