Classic civil war battle novel. The language is fairly poetic and written after the civil war, but I thought it brought the war to life. It tells a story about a man's personal journey as a soldier in the civil war. It's his fears, his passions, his courage, selfishness, and all from one man's viewpoint.

Everyone should read this story. In fact, many of us are required to in school. It's a great, accessible story told by a narrator you really root for. This edition is nice, with a few of those typos common to scanned books. It isn't abridged, which is key.

I received this book with no complaints. It was in excellent condition and arrived before I expected it. Anyone interested in United States history and has not read this book, I think, will find it interesting. My brother served and was wounded in the Vietnam War. He died not too long ago and didn't talk to me about his experiences in the war. I feel this book gave me some insight into his feelings.

An amazing and no frills account of an individual's heart wrenching experience in a war on the battlefield and within himself. The prose is not something I was accustomed to, so it took a while for my brain to get any traction, but once it did, the road was a smooth, albeit an occasionally morose sojourn. The protagonist's internal deliberations are uniquely and astonishingly honest. I recommend this to every individual who currently wears the uniform or is contemplating serving in the armed forces.

I have never faced combat, but this book seemed to deal with the feelings I would think I would face in that type of situation. Not considering myself to be overly courageous, it showed what a normal person would go through in times when courage is needed. I would recommend it and it was an easy read.

Crane strips away pretensious 19th century narrative rosettas and lays bare the essential elements of story and character. The prose is minimilist in denouements and blossoms during emotional moments into a bizarre macabre poetry creating a vivid and disturbing experience that lasts long after reading it. You wont find many novels with this caliber of narrative mastery!

It was kind of interesting to read due to different perspective than anything I've experienced but I could not really relate. Maybe young males can relate better to this book. From the beginning, I did not relate to this young man's desire to go to war.

Classic tale of civil war; but generally a story of war in general. The novel is neither pro or against any of the issues that caused the war. It is a tale as to how cowardness can change to bravery and that a youth became a man during the course of battles.

I found many parts of this book interesting but the intolerable part was the descriptiveness. There would paragraphs upon paragraphs of words that I felt were useless and boring. I would recommend skipping over such paragraphs after a short skim for main points. I wouldn't recommend the book.

The story was fascinating. It explained the circumstances of the Civil War really well, and was a story of growth and courage for the main character. With that being said there was too much swearing and taking the name of the Lord in vain for my liking.

Excellent for its day but very dated.
Dialogue lengthy and made the reading difficult.
The descriptions of war were done with beautiful similes and metaphors.
I struggled with this young man as he Grew to overcome his cowardice and become a hero of sorts.
This is a classic that should be read.

This is an American Civil War story about a young man who ran from a battle, but later was grazed by a bullet as he faced his fears. It is full of emotion. It is not a history lesson at all, but shows what goes through the mind of a soldier in battle.

Explores the front lines close and personal, from the standpoint of a young man in doubt of himself and the war at hand. He navigates through the emotions of fear, overbearing self-assurance and rage, all of which guide him to be the soldier he needs to be. We as readers see the battlefield through Henry's eyes and discover what men think and why they go on at a time when they are not even sure they should. As much a classic as when it was first printed.

This a wonderful travel to the past. The human spirit has remain unchanged over the past one hundred years. However, some of the way people react to situations has changed. Good view of how people live during the Civil War.

Although this book deals with a youth's introduction and experience in american civil war, the message is also a metaphor of real life.. imagine yourself newly graduated from school or university and not knowing how you will fare in battle of life..will you become a hero or will you run away...the style of writing makes you feel like you are in the thick of things... it is a kindle classic

This recording is perfect to accompany the novel. I used it to get my students started with the novel, and then again periodically as we continued to read the book. The recording is also helpful for students who are a little below reading grade level or who need assistance with focusing while they are reading.

This book is not very entertaining, only describing the internal conflict of Henry. It has a weak story plot, not traveling the heroes journey. If you like to read southern dialogue that doesn't make sense unless you read it out loud to yourself, then it's the book for you.

The language is tough at times, yet the message Crane delivers is true and formidable. It's practically free VIA kindle and was definitely worth the read and study- take it in chunks and highlight/ use references to make it more enjoyable/realavent

We had to purchase a copy for a class assignment. I love the kindle version. So easy for my son to keep track of where they are in the book. Convenient since I will need it for all 3 of my kids. He enjoys reading and taking a classic and putting it on kindle somehow makes it easier for him.

The book we ordered was "The Red Badge of Courage". We ordered a book that was supposed to have extras like a bullet hole, pictures and something to do with a rifle. It was a little nicer than just the plain book. We did not get the book with any of these little extras. What came was just a plain book. Would be very careful before I order any more books.
