Excellent Story! I loved it from beginning to end. I do hope the author, Mary Morony, creates more stories. This was her debut and it was well worth the read. This story is of older times past, so if you like reading books like that, here's one more to add to your collection.

Well written book that went no where. The story line is good, well written, but it just stops. At the end, you are left with so many questions...nothing is resolved...nothing Is finished...I was left wondering what was the point to the book.

Was a good and interesting book, but if your expecting The Help, it wasn't quite as interesting. The help had way more humor as far as I was concerned. Still it had good characters that you cared about and an interesting story line.

Mary Morony's superbly written, Apron Strings, brought back lost memories of Virginia's late 50's/early 60's...Especially rich is the storyline between seven year old Sallee and Ethel, the family's maid...So well written, I could actually "hear" their dialogue and I thanked the heavens for the safe haven Ethel tried to provide Sallee from the all too many dysfunctional adults...I smiled and laughed, frowned and cried...The perfect read....As Ina Garten would say, "who wouldn't like that!?!"

A southern family deals with life's problems while maintaining their distance from "the hired help." A story of class and racial differences that also proves the point that we are truly all the same. Wonderful characters.

Very interesting novel about the Civil Rights era and how it affected one family and their hired lady. Very poignant, bittersweet, yet interesting and humorous to read. I will probably keep this on my Kindle to read again.

"Apron Strings'" has an interesting theme although it's been used many times before and w/much better writing and grammar! I found it extremely disappointing, tedious, and poorly written! Don't waste your time or money!

Living in Richmond Va myself, and growing up during this time, I can relate to the social attitudes and cultural differences talked about in the book. I liked the two prospective. The book was well written and I enjoyed it.

I had such pleasure reading Mary Morony’s beautifully written book Apron Strings, that I will read it once again with the aid of an audible. You can listen to it 3 times faster that way and have time to read it again at top speed! It’s a saga of life written with pleasure, joy, sincerity and sophistication. She has such insight of life that there was no need for ugliness in the book ... just great story-telling and breathtaking interludes of pure living from birth all the way to death and from first love to divorce. Read it ... you’ll love it. Es

The story of children in the South being raised by a black nanny during the 1950's is so true to life. Brought tears to my eyes many times at the suffering on both sides of the fence. Loved the intertwining of stories from the past and current. Great book!

This is a well written book that explores the relationships in a family, including the servant. She was really the mother as the parents were weak damaged individuals. It is poignant and revealing of character and the damage caused by alcoholism. I would recommend this book to anyone interested I family dynamics and a good story.

Lots of tears and laughs with this book. Great characters and story. I wasn't ready for it to end. I did see a few different turns it could have taken and there was some build up that I wish could have been expanded upon, but over all I wasn't disappointed.

I would not recommend this book. I liked the characters, but the author never flushed them out. It was a frustrating read. Several storylines started, but not developed. Too bad. It started off promising. Ended disappointingly.

Pleasant read...black vernacular and speech patterns written to be easy to read. believable characters, however the book left me asking unanswered questions about the characters' futures. Story could have been more developed...will read again!

I enjoyed very much but felt some strings were left hanging..... Where was dad? Who was cute boy in locket? What about her feelings towards little Early? Did I miss something? But again, loved the premise and it read very well.....

This wasn't the most interesting book I have read but it wasn't the worst either. It does seem the author didn't have a complete idea of where they wanted this book to go. I felt like it was just piled together then BAM THE END

I could not put this down when I started reading. Such a great true read on that time of life. I remember these times. Grew up in small town and experienced some of these things. Beautifully written. Looking forward to next book.

It took a few chapters to start understanding the characters, but then there is a sweet innocence in Salle's telling of her story. She gives us a glimpse of life in the mid century with all it's prejudice and preconceptions of people. It was thought provoking and I would highly recommend the book to my friends

I really enjoyed this story although it was very sad at times. It shows how life was back in the 50's from a child's perspective in a southern state. And delves into alcoholism and how it affects a family.

Made me sad! Character development is pretty good but the adult characters devolve as the story progresses and leave you feeling really sad for the children. The plot line leaves a lot of things unexplained and some typos and other mistakes distract. Glad it was free - you get what you pay for!

I imagine for some families, this story is 100 percent true. It was still OK to be drunk. It was still OK to treat blacks as non-people. It was still OK to treat children as a burden (because you had little control over their arrival).

I went from laughter to sorrow in one fell swoop and back to good humor.
If you enjoy listening to stories told like your grandmother's memories, then you must read this.....
