Maisie runs into big problems of domestic security when she investigates the death of a lowly, mentally challenged handy man. From the bottom of society, his mother wants to know the reason for his death. Maisie can report only the overt reasons. Other reasons of national security, revealed to her through James, she must keep to herself.

A well thought out British mystery. I enjoyed the plot and the character development was well done. The story takes place in the 1930's between the world wars. I've always enjoyed books set in that time period.

Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series was recommended to me by two friends, and I cannot thank them enough for the recommendation. I have been taking my time with each book, savoring the writing, the characters, and the stories. Can't wait for her next book to come out later this month.

This was a delightful, easy read. I finished it in 2 sittings. M's Winspear has set her Maisie Dobbs stories on the background of pre WW II background in England. So, you will learn a little history while trying to figure out "who done it"!

Another good book by Ms. Winspear.. Her character development is sooo good that you feel alot of empathy for them and hope for justice.
I also like the independence of Maisie.. She is a winner for me.

While I enjoy character information and development I do not think it should the majority of the story line. This book spends more time on what is going on with the main character, Maisie, than with the story.

Very interesting historical mystery series. The main character is interesting and unusual, but the character works. This book had a very unusual mystery about the murder of poor Eddie. Kept me guessing.

I have read the entire Masie Dobbs series from the beginning..what a well written and engrossing series. It is really one of those "can't put it down n stay up all nite to finish " book. In fact all of her books are like that ..well drawn characters and people you want to and do care about. Really makes you "feel" like you are in that period...the only other author who is as meticulous is Caleb Carr's Alienist book.

Have truly enjoyed this series of mysteries but find myself becoming increasingly more frustrated with Maisies inability to sort out her personal life. There are times I would like to grab her by the shoulders and tell her to stop being so selfish. Will I continue to read Maisie Dobbs? You betcha!

The is another good Maisie Dobbs novel. I've read them all, and have enjoyed every one of them! Would love to know how Maisie's life evolved through World War II. Hope Ms. Winspear will take us there!

Part of the series that I have avidly read. Could be read alone. this one is more of a true mystery novel with some side stories about Masie and other continuing characters. A lot about the "costs" to workers when industries boom.

Maisie Dobbs' mysteries are interesting to read to learn the customs and happenings during the time of the stories. Ms. Winspear shows in good detail what day to day living was like in the era of the novel.

Elegy is Winspear getting even better. It is multiplotted, and deals clearly with the dissolution kind of life that had lasted until WWI (horses, new industry, servants). At the same time, there is a whisper of the war to come. Winspear creats new characters, while building the known characters of Maisy Dobbs, Billy and others, who become even more real. A good read.

I very seldom get into serial writing by an author but the Maisie Dobbs series got me hooked from the very beginning. This, the latest in her series does not disappoint. The characters are etched in your mind by Windspear's ability to write with a philosophical touch. In many ways this style has reached me deeply as even the most eloquent historical writing has failed to do.

Windspear has hopefully set the stage for more to come in this series, maybe now reaching into the WW2 era! Her thorough research has brought the WW1 era to life for me and I am hoping for the same as her timeline reaches into WW2. Even though I was born in 1944 of parents whose lives were a part of the greatest generation, historical fiction done by a masterful author is sometimes the best way to personalize an era.

Please, Ms. Windspear, write another in this wonderful series.

I have read all the Maisie Dobbs books, and looked forward to this one....perhaps too much. Maisie is in a rut, and isn't using her considerable training and skills to climb out of it. Too depressing all around.

I was eagerly anticipating Maisie's next adventure and loved the idea that the events in Germany would be interwoven with the events surrounding Maisie's latest case. In that regard, I was not disappointed. Future Maisie books have certainly been given a springboard for delving into this chapter of history in even more detail. The part that was disappointing was the mystery itself.

Generally, Maisie makes deductions and discoveries that I'm astounded she can make. The plot twists and turns and draws upon chance meeetings and coinicidences that all come together to form an original and thought-provoking page-turner. This one was pretty simple and could be solved after Chapter 3. The majority of the book was dedicated to Maisie's angst about her place in society, her desire to control her world, and her current romantic relationship.

Honestly, after "seeing" Maisie toss aside 3 men who not only love her, but are not threatened by her intelligence and desire to be of use in the world, I wish the author would just stop getting Maisie involved and let her be a loner. Love James or free him! Hasn't he been through enough?

The author should concentrate on the mystery and leave the personal stuff out if it's just going to frustrate her readers.

Love Masie, some plots sadder more heart wrenching. Had I hard time with this one. But those years were difficult .Masie seems to have a softer touch dealing with the more vulnerable a is learning how to deal with hers' and there situations.

Jacqueline Winspear did it again. I have followed the Maise Dobbs series from from beginning and I'm always waiting for the next installment. They can be read individually and be much enjoyed, but I think there's more to glean when you have the previous stories in mind. I could read them again and I never reread a novel.

I love the Maisie Dobbs series by author Jacqueline Winspear and this mystery did not disappoint. When I finished it I picked up another Maisie Dobbs to read. Jacqueline Winspear writes a very good intelligent book that endears you to the main character.

I rated this a 5 star read. Jacqueline Winspear weaves her stories around several people and incidents in a wonderful way. I have read most of her works and am always pleased with her sensitive dealing with war injuries and their aftermath.

I have loved the entire series of Maisie Dobbs mysteries. They are both historically interesting and entertaining and they are intellectually challenging. No blood and gore, just sleuthing. Ms. Winspear, I hope you keep coming up with more stories.

The Maisie Dobbs novels are unique in telling the story of a woman, from child to adult, in the first third of the 20th century England. Maisie is a brilliant woman who is an investigator. How she got to be that is an amazing tale. This book is a continuation of her story and a reader really needs to begin with the first book, "Maisie Dobbs."
