The selection of stories allows the reader to experience Mr. Leonard's evolution as a writer of Western fiction. From his earliest books to wonderful stories like "Hombre" you can see the change. I highly recommend this compilation of Mr. Leonard's work.

I'm late to the bandwagon, first becoming aware of Mr. Leonard from the excellent Justified series on television. These stories grab you from the beginning. Richly detailed, with characters who come alive. His gift for dialogue is unmatched.

The stories are just amazing. I did not find one story that wasn't well worth the read. The main characters were in deadly situations but through clever thinking and action they overcame and triumphed.

There is nothing to dislike about the way his characters are brought to life. Leonard writes as if he has traveled back in time and observed first hand what he is bringing to life on the printed page.

Most stories are from 50s...pulp mags. Decent. Why I bought to read...Hombre is separate tale. Early Leonard and seems as well versed on Apache lore/western lore...not McMurtry but decent, when you figure genre into it. 3:10 to Yuma is not, as expected, like movie versions, but a gem. Should be more besides the few authors we have, considering out history.

The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard Exciting, fast paced short stories by a young writer who is destined to become famous. I'd recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys nitty gritty westerns with a twist.

These stories are the first efforts of a writer looking for a "voice." The dialogue for which Leonard would be known in his later years is nowhere apparent in these stories. And read back-to-back, they are repetitious.
There's barely a hint here of the writer that Leonard would become.

This volume would have been better titled "Selected Western Stories of Elmore Leonard". Had the description included a list of titles that this volume contained I probably would not have purchased it as it is hardly complete.

It works out to ~$1/new story and I consider it a bargain. If you have this book it makes no sense to obtain "Tonto Woman".
