I listened to the book on tape as an adult and it not only inspired and moved me, it actually challeneged me to further explore Alaska and wolves in general. A well deserved "classic" status, along with The Hatchet and other gritty young adult novels.

This book is amazingly good. It is a tale about an Eskimo girl named Miyax, or Julie surviving in the wild. She meets a pack of wolves and learns how to talk to them. Thoughout the tale Miyax realizes that what she was looking for was all wrong and what she finds where she is is better than anything else.

Julie of the Wolves is a fantastic book if you want to learn about wilderness skills. In the begining Kapugen sent his daughter, Julie to live with her aunt. Julie began to grow tired of her aunt, so she flew to Barrow to get married to a boy named Daniel as she was told to do. She got very angry and decided to go visit her pen pal in San Franciso. To get to San Francisco, she came across many problems. She had to get across the tundra and take a boat to get there. When she started across the tundra she had trouble getting food. Then she met a wolf pack that helped her get food. When she got nearer to civilization, she met a family hunting that told her her dad was alive. We can't tell you anymore, you will have to find out for yourself.

It is very discriptive and fun to read anytime. This book tells about a young girl befriending a pack of wolves. At first, Julie just names the wolves. first, she names the leader of the pack Amaroq, then the other wolf Nails, then the mother of the pups, Zit, Zat, Zing, and Kapu, Silver, and finally the "outcast",Jello. She later finds out that her father, Kapugan, is alive after not returning home after a hunt many years ago, and sets off to find him after Amaroq is killed by gussaks, or Americans to find out that he has married a gussak and started to live like a gussak. At first Julie leaves him, but after her faithful pet bird dies, she realizes that she is alone and the eskimo tradition is dead and returnes to Kapugan.

I read this book about a year ago. I really didn't get this when I tried to read it back in 4th grade. There's more to it than the adventure but it's just not something young children find interesting. I had and still have an obsession with wolves and this may have led me to give it a second chance. It's the story of an Eskimo girl who flees a forced marrige, trying to get to her pen pal in San Francisco. The girl, Julie, gets stuck on the tundra with no food but befriends a pack of wolves. They let her in and she finally feels she will make it but when she grows attached to her adoptive family she realizes she could never travel with them once they move on. Julie toils with the idea of heading to San Francisco but can she leave her new friends? An excelent book I suggest for readers grades 6 or 7 through 8 depending on the maturity of that person. Although it will probably be found enjoyable to most readers of ages 13 and up.

This story is a heart-warming-and-breaking book, filled with memories, love, hatred, and life-changing choices. If you like stories of Eskimo girls named Miyax becoming a "wolf", the death of a majestic wolf (Ameroq), and finding a supposedly dead father, you'll LOVE this book! I did!

My class and I read this book in school and I LOVED it! It stays true to life and isn't all gushy sweet and happy. I do half to warn you though. There is a flashback part that kids need to be mature about. We had so much fun reading it and I would definitely recommend buying it. Perfect "girl power" book. :-)

This is an OK book, but it could have beenwritten a little better. I don't enjoy the topic of the story. My favorite character is Kapu. He is playful, funny for a wolf, and a good leader. The setting is in the tundra in Alaska. A girl named Miyax is lost in the tundra and lives with wolves. Then she goes out to find her father. Her conflict, finding her "dead" father, is solved. I would not reccomend this book to anyone.

Could you do it? Could you survive in the frozen waste of the Arctic tundra? That is exactly what Miyax must do after escaping a terrible marriage and running away into nowhere. To her Acrtic village she is Miyax, to her Californian friend, she is Julie. After building a hut on a frost heave, she has no food, only matches, her knife, and a pack of wolves to guide her. After awhile, the wolves lead her to a point near her old village. Now she must make a decision, she can rejoin her village OR stay with the wolves. What should she do, for she is Miyax of the eskimos, but Julie of the wolves.

I love this book because the theme is realistic. It's about a girl who finds a niche with a wolf pack. After studying them for a while at a distance, she becomes one of them. The story is heartwarming and,to me, shows that humans and animals can help and understand each other.

Julie of the Wolves is a novel about a girl and a wolf pack, fighting against nature to survive. It is an inspiering book of how Julie fights for her life, and learns to live with a pack of wolves. It is a good book to read if you love adventures and the outdoors. It explains how well people can connect with nature.

I really liked this book. I've read it before. I liked it because Julie is brave and kind. She and her wolves survive on a cold tundra which is amazing, I think. It also teaches the Eskimo ways and traditions. They are very interesting. All in all it was a pretty good book!

When I read the first part of the book i thought it would just be boring. When I got to the first part of the middle I started to read it I just started to fell in love with it. By the time I was done reading it, it felt like i wanted to read it 100 more times. Some of the parts in the book were very sad like when Jello died.

This is the story of Miyax, an Eskimo girl who is known to her pen pal in San Francisco as Julie. Julie leaves her home to go visit her pen pal because her father has gone, and she is married to a boy that does not treat her well. On the way, Julie gets lost and has to depend on a pack of wolves to survive. Using her father's words on how to befriend wolves, Julie, becomes one of the pack as she tries to find her way to San Francisco. There are some sad parts to this book, but I really love the great descriptions of the land and the wolves. Definitely a book that will warm your heart.

I think the book Julie of the Wolves was a good book. I liked the part when she became a wolf in the pack. Her leader was named Amaroq, and he had three pals. Their names are Silver,Jello, and Nails! I like Jello, because of his name. Silver, and Nails are cool names too.

Mayax was a girl who was taken to live in a city named Barrow (Alaska) to marry a man named Daniel. She wasn't happy; the jealousy of Daniel was strong. Being unhappy Mayax,or Julie as Amy, her penpal is San Francisco called her, left to live with Amy. It seemed now the hatred that she had for Daniel made her decide to leave Barrow. She got lost. She soon found herself living or trying to survive with a pack of wolves. She was now living like an Eskimo living with wolves. The leader,Armoroq, was trying to accept Julie as one of the wolves of the pack. She was shown how to live like an Eskimo by her father Kapugen, who she believed was dead. Would she survive or not? Would Armoroq accept her as one of the wolves?

The book I read was Julie of the Wolves. The author Jean Craighead George gave this book a lot of scary parts. It was a good story but I think she should have made it more exciting. There was a part of the story when she ran away from her husband because she didn't love him. Then she was on her own. If you want to know the end you should read it.

Uggh! I really disliked this book! After reading the authors' other books, I thought this book would be good also. I was totally wrong! I did learn just a tad bit of information about Arctic life, but I didn't really get into the book at all! I would give it below zero if I could. Being an animal lover,I was really depressed when my two favorite characters (animals) both died! There was also a very inappropriate part in the book that really made me disgusted! DO NOT READ THIS BOOK ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE AN ANIMAL LOVER! Humpf!

Great writing style, loveable wolves, and lots of action all make this a very good read. It is part of a series of three, however, and this one should be read first, however if you would rather have it from the wolves POV rather than the girls, I would suggest at least reading the third book (Julies Wolf Pack, and my favorite of the series.)

I hated "Julie of the Wolves." By the time I finished, 15,000,000 questions were swimming in my head, one which was, "How on earth did this win the Newbery?" Although Part 1 was good, Part 2 was confusing, and Part 3 was the sorriest excuse for a Newbery award winner I have ever read.
I was expecting some grand tale which ended with the sentence, "And with that, Julie pulled up the covers of her new bed in San Francisco, closed her eyes, and went to sleep." Instead it was, "Julie pointed her boots toward Kapugen."
If you like books with weak plots and confusing sentences you must read four times to understand, then you'll love "Julie of the Wolves."

She gains the trust of this pack and joins them as a pack member. She travels with the pack and lives and speaks by their language of movement, sound and touch. First let me say that the book was not that good over all. some parts of the story was very confusing. I didn't like it at all. For examble:when she talked about cliping off part of the birds wing so she could have a friend. I think that was wrong because birds should be free. One part that confused me was when she made a house. She said that she had i refregarater, but how could u get one if you in the middle of no where. i just thought the book was bad . That is my review for the book julie of the wolves.

This was a favorite book of my younger years. Whenever I think of wolves or the far North, I think of Julie and how she survived in a wolf pack. She intrigued me... able to understand the wolves. She became a member of the pack, a part of the hierarchy. Wonderfully imaginative and yet informative. Recommended for young teens as well as adults.

This book is in three parts. In the first part tells we meet Miyax on the Arctic tundra after running away from her marriage. We find that she is only thirteen years old, and is going to meet a friend in San Francisco. Miyax has run out of provisions for her trip, and realizes that she is lost. She decides to join a wolf pack to survive, so she studies their behavior and imitates it. She is accepted, and is able to care for herself. She also recognizes birds and, knowing their migration habits, is able to discern her location and direction.

The second part tells Miyax's life before part one. It tells of her father, Kapugen, and how he sent her to live with his aunt Martha and go to school, where she is called Julie. One day Aunt Martha told Miyax that her father had never returned from a hunting trip, and pieces of his kayak were found on the shore. Kapugen had arranged a marriage between Miyax and the son of one of his old friends. When she met Daniel, she was disappointed to realize that he was mentally slow. After she was married, she basically became a helper to Daniel's mother in her business of making parkas to sell to tourists. One day Daniel came home angry because others were taunting him with "having a wife and not knowing how to mate her." Miyax ran away in fear that night.

Part three goes back to being lost on the tundra. Miyax grows to love her wolf pack, and looks to the leader as her father. When she sees him killed for sport, she decides not to head to San Francisco where people do not recognize the value of the old Eskimo ways. She chooses to live alone in the wild, until she meets some people who tell her that her father is not dead. She goes to find him, but thinks that he has forsaken the Eskimo ways, and is part of the kind of people that would kill her wolf father for sport. In the end of the book, she sees that maybe the time of the Eskimos is past, and returns to her father.

I didn't care for this book too much, probably because it reminded me of Scott O'Dell's "The Island of the Blue Dolphins." Then I realized that the same author wrote "My Side of the Mountain" which is the same kind of survival story. It didn't seem to have all that much of a plot, and I didn't care for the part about Miyax's marriage, or the way she identified with the wolves. I think it's because we as people are social creatures, designed to live with each other, not alone in isolation from other people. We desire to have companions, and although dogs or other animals may be man's best friend, and solitude is necessary at times, it is hard for me to connect with a book like this.

Julie of the wolves has no descriptive, juicy, fun parts in it. I would rather have read an action-packed fantasy with good details. If you would like to read this book I would advise you to think twice. If you like boring, put-you-to-sleep books then go ahead but if you don't then keep away. It uis all about Miyax and her boring life as an eskimo. It is the would have been a little bit more interesting if we didn't have to do work on it.

This book is great if your a wolf lover like me. If you aren't, then you can try it, but most say that it was boring. If you say that its digusting, then your just not mature enough to handle it then. Not to give a wrong intention though, because even little toddlers can be mature enough to handle this book. Great to read. It gets exiting in the end-trust me. You should also read Julie, and Julies Wolf Pack, its a series and they're the next(and last) two.

Juile of the wolves is a gripping epic that explains the stuggles a young Eskimo girl endures. The adventure begins when Thirteen-year-old Juile, also known as Miyax, is lost in the Tundra after trying to escape a cruel marrige. She struggles with hunger, her eventual love for the wolves, death, surrvival, and the two worlds of the Gussaks and the Eskimo. Juilie of the Wolves is a must-read-two-thumbs-up book.

This book was enjoyable and was very nicely detailed in information about Eskimo ways and I think that the author must have researched a lot about Eskimo traditions.

I liked this book because Miyax has a very good sense of adventure and knows how to keep her Eskimo ways while lost on the Tundra of Alaska. I also think that Myax is

very resourceful. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and dogs or wolves.

This was a wonderful book with an excellent portrayal of the Alaskan tundra. As Miyax journeys to find her inner self, she also sturggles with the external conflicts of surviving the harsh winters of Alaska. I recommend this book to children of all ages, for its meaning should be an inspiration to all those who read it.

I found the ending of this book quite disturbing. For most of the novel, the author portrays the arctic environment in general and wolves specifically in a sensitive manner. However, in the final pages, Julie's father kills the hero wolf by shooting it from an airplane. The author concludes by essentially shrugging the whole thing off. Julie and her dad reunite, and what happened to the wolf (who had saved her life) is depicted as something that's too bad but cannot be helped. Further, it is suggested that this is the way things are going to be and that's that. A bad ending and a bad environmental message to send to young readers.

I had to read this book in 6th grade. My teacher explained how this book was so greatly described. Yeah, that's true, but what about the plot? The plot is so boring, a girl stuck on the tundra who can't deside whether to stay or leave. It shouldn't be a Newberry Award book. The kids should deside what is Newberry and what isn't. This book's plot sucks!!

The villains of this book are the hunters in planes that indiscriminately shoot wolves for sport, or to claim a bounty from the state. Alaska's Governor, Sarah Palin, tried to increase that bounty to $150 and broadly expanded the hunting of wolves from planes. She did this claiming that the wolves were competing against human hunters for caribou, without any basic understanding of the science of the wolf ecosystem, that helps keeps all species in balance. That sense of balance in the natural world is well communicated by this book, and is a valuable lesson for young teens. If only Sarah Palin had read this book when she was teen, then maybe she would have more respect for the natural world.

This is an interesting book, but it has confusing flashbacks. It's an adventure, though the parts about talking to wolves are true. Don't read this book!!!!! I had to read this for school and I could hardly get through the first chapter. Now what was the book about again? Oh yeah! You couldn't tell beacause it was so badly written! That's right! Just don't read this book, unless ofcourse you would like to read endless chapters of rambling and get bored out of your mind.

While this book gives many interesting details of Arctic life and the differences between the traditional and modernized lifestyles of the Eskimos, it is not worth the effort due to one inappropriate, unnecessary, gratuitous scene on p. 102. I was shocked when I discovered this scene of s*x*al assault between Daniel and Julie, especially considering the age of the target audience. I realize that this scene is the catalyst which drives Julie to go back to the wilderness, but my goodness! Couldn't the author have thought of something else? Due to this one scene, the entire book should be regarded with great caution, in my opinion.

I understand that this book is required reading by many elementary schools. As a parent, I would appreciate a forewarning, so that I could decide whether this book would be appropriate for my children. My 11-y-old daughter received this book as a gift, but I remembered something that I'd read about this book that was questionable. I did a little reading, a boy! am I glad I did. The scene of s*x*al assault would have been confusing and disturbing to my child. I will not be letting her read it. There are plenty of other wonderful books out there that have nothing inappropriate.

I really enjoyed the first two parts of this book, but toward the third I did not, as it was focused on racial hatred. The first two sections were mainly about her survival in the arctic tundra, and her eventual acceptance by a wolf pack.

However, in the third part of the book, the main character is consumed with hatred toward white people and their culture because of a wrong a white hunter did to her. She refuses even to see her white friends again because of her blind hatred and intolerance. She rejects her father as well, because of the fact that he incorporates aspects of white culture (such as technology) into his life. Definitely not my favorite heroine.

Julie of the wolves was not a very good book at all I loathed it.The reason is beacuse I hate survival stories they are very boring and they only think about survival because they are bums and can't afford to live in the city like normal people do. And the dumbest thing I thought about the book was she talks to wolves like they are humans and they do not understand one word that you are saying and they wolves get annoning because they always howl and you can not sleep.

julie of the wolves stinks! I montht might be a great book if you didn't read it in school over the course months

. but I'm doing a reveiw so here it goes. the book is about an eskimo girl who flees from here marriage and gets lost in the tundra. she then befriends the wolves and goes to here father that she formerly thought was dead. then she relizes that he has forsaken the old ways and flees to the tundra but after a short time she goes back and faces here new reality. the main conflict for here was trying to decide if she is going to face the new ways or stay in the old ways. again it may be a good book if you didn't read it as a school project.

I thought Julie of the Wolves was very bad. I loathed it. The reason why was because I hate survival stories because Julie doesn't have a brain. Because she talks to animals like they are human beings and they don't understand a word you are saying.

Jean Craghead-George is a gifted writer. Her novels have enchanted readers for years. She has an amazing ability to describe a scene! All of this, plus her general subject matter being about the outdoors, nature, adventure make for a teacher's (which I am) dream when looking for books to assign to their students. HOWEVER, do not allow your young children to read this violent book. Although it is marketed to 4th-8th graders it is in NO WAY appropriate for that young age. In addition to the graphic violence and animal abuse, 2/3 of the way into the book it has a well-described scene of r**e on page 102. This is very shocking and disturbing. If you want a good outdoors adventure book, read "My Side of the Mountain." Wait to read "Julie of the Wolves" until the kids are in high school...or perhaps never. Too much negative to put into young minds!!!

First off I read this book when I was In elamentary school. The reason Julie runs away is because dumb Daniel tries to force her to have sex with him at age 13. Not a subject I want a nine year old to deal with. Second she makes friends with wolves. Wild wolves are dangouous! They don't recomend you even keep a half wolf dog in your house because that predator instinct can kick in and they can kill you, but theese wolves don't see her as a snack they act more like a domestic dog pack. I'm sorry but I don't want my kids thinking wolves are safe. keep a respectfull distance please. I don't rember why my teacher made me read it so the point isn't memorable at all.

This is a horrible book!

Besides the rape issue, that other reviews have already brought up, there's so many other issues with this book that I would not recommend it to anyone. The ending was the worse. Stop reading if you don't want a spoiler.

The ending went from sad, when the pack of wolves were being hunted and Amaroq and Kapu gets shot, and Amaroq dies. To hopeful when Miyax meets a couple of hunters and tell her that her father is alive in a nearby village. To depressing when she sees her father and realizes that he's not the Eskimo that she remembers him as, but rather he's become an American and worse, when she realizes that she, too, must become an America rather than remain an Eskimo and true to her beliefs. Can she have no happiness? If I were to re-name the book, I would title it The Last Eskimo.

Mothers beware
This book is not suitable for children at all. The rape scene is incredibly graphic and awful. It wasn’t necessary to have it in the plot. Little girls need to stay little as long as possible. If I were a mother I would read this before your daughter does. I am a teacher and I make sure this book is taken out of libraries anytime I can. Not a child’s book

This might be a great book. It's a Newberry Medal winner after all and recommended by many people including teachers and librarians. So I trusted it should be good for my children. But when my 10-year-old daughter got this book from her teacher in her classroom and read the book upto page 102, she said, "Mom, this part is so gross!" She didn't even want to mention why it's so "gross." She looked just so disgusted and disturbed. When she went to sleep, I grabbed the book and read the page. I simply got shocked. How can this kind of book be recommended for children of this young age? Again, this might be a great book, but it's not for young children. It should be removed from any list of recommended books for children younger than maybe high schoolers.

This is an inappropriate book for young kids to read. I can't even guess at what age I would be "okay" with my children reading the rape of Julie by her husband! Thankfully I read that part before my child. If it made ME feel disgusting and repulsed, what would it have done to my 11 year old?!
The rape was the reason Julie ran away but it most certainly could have been written in a hundred other ways with a hundred other reasons for her leaving! Why this author chose to use this violent and filthy scene is beyond me.
Furthermore, I am sick and tired of books being rated for 9 year olds that are in no way appropriate for such an age!! Perhaps it's time to start rating books the way movies and music are rated with warnings for content and language.
Please RateJulie of the Wolves
