By the Great Horn Spoon was by far the most enjoyable social science book I have read. The book truly captures the the spirit of what life (Gold Rush life) was like in those days. The author tells this story with great enthusiasm and descriptive deatil; the reader automatically feels as if they are there traveling along with the main characters. I beleive that the use of this book in any classroom with help students gain a better understanding of what "gold rushers" went through to keep their dreams alive.

By the Great Horn Spoon! was a great adventure book full of unexpected turns and twists. Although I am older than the intended audience for the book, I still found it highly enjoyable and quite humorous.
The story: Jack is a twelve-year-old boy living in his Aunt Arabella's house. It's 1849. The Gold Rush fever is in high tide. As Jack finds out that Aunt Arabella's inheritance is running out, he and his butler, Praiseworthy formulate a bold plan: Go to California. Strike it rich. Come back. During their adventure, Jack and Praiseworthy meet exciting and fascinating characters, some of which have names such as Cut-Eye Higgins and Pitch-Pine Billy. Alas, not everything goes as planned, but things end up going well in the end anyway. Look for the surprise twist in the end!

I am a docent at the Marshall Gold Discovery Park in Coloma California as well as the president of the local Historical Society [...] . The Great Horn Spoon is one of the books school children have been reading around here for years and years. It is a great adventure story about a young boy and the family butler who come to California to strike it rich. I read the book as an adult and liked it but it realy for 10 to 13 year olds, they should just love it. It is a short easy to read book.

I definitely enjoyed reading By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman, and I think it would be a great supplementary source for teachers to use in the Gold Rush unit. This book is a ficitional story, but it is full of historical accounts related to the Gold Rush era. The main characters is Jack and Praiseworthy. They set out on a journey in search of striking rich when Jack's aunt became penniless. The two main characters went on a wild and exciting adventures where they encountered many life-learning lessons about themselves and the historical background of that time. This book is definitely a good resource to use in and outside of the classroom, because it provides historical information along with an inspiring story about friendships.

Sid Fleischman enriches his readers with an adventurous tale of a young man, Jack and his butler Praiseworthy, who embark overseas to the hot California Mountains in search of gold. Praiseworthy is a wise and clever man who guides young Jack to California. Along the way they encounter many obstacles from almost being thrown into the depths of the Pacific Ocean to making friends with the captain for survival. This book also offers historical accounts of the California's Gold Rush and those that came from different regions. This is a great book for students in the fourth grade to venture in the world of discovery.

I teach fourth grade in California and it is a perfect match to our history curriculum . The delightful book is unusual because of the butler's pride in his calling and the relationship with his 11 year old master, Jack. It discusses the trip around the horn and the disasters of trying to "mine a fortune." The best aspect of this book is as an example of the writing process. There is a lot of foreshadowing, so the entire book was thought out in advance. This is a process I am trying to teach my fourth graders when they write stories. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a kind of ridiculous children's gold rush book.
A boy and his English butler stow away of a steamer bound for California in 1849. If you can get past the English butler gag,
it is really pretty much the gold fields in California
like Mark Twain wrote about ( cleaned up some for kids maybe?).
The prices were what the market demanded and the enterprising took advantage of the gold seekers. There is adventure enough here for any young mind to enjoy.

I really enjoyed reading this book -- it is an easy read. I think that students can benefit from reading this book because they can picture themselves in the middle of the gold rush! Jack is the ideal character to use for students in the fourth grade because students can relate to him and can get excited about striking it rich! I couldn't wait to read the end of the book to see if Jack struck it rich!

I like this book. Jack and Praiseworthy try to find gold in California to save Jack's aunt's house. They travel from Boston to California by ship. The book had a lot of similes that made it more interesting. I like the book because it teaches you about the gold rush. If you want to find out about Jack and Praiseworthy's adventures. Read the book.

I teach Special Ed. in a mainstream class setting for fourth grade. Which is when California students study the CA gold Rush. This book is a great book for all 4th graders to read! There are not too many books out in the market to peak a boy's interest. Most main characters are girls. This book has it all, adventures on the high seas and at every stop along the way! It will captivate even the non-reader.

By the Great Horn Spoon is a great book for children. It gives them a look at how it was during the gold rush years. I like how the author adds real historical information. This allows the children to learn while enjoying a good book.

This book didn't hold my interest, the plot, the characters, or anything about it. This surprised me since I usually like this author, but I believe it was first published in 1963. Maybe that's why it wasn't very good.
