Sorry, but this book was a disspointment. The characters remained shallow and not believable. The story itself was boring the ending reminded me of cheap romance novels. I am a fan of M. M. Kaye but this book is not something you need to read.

Love, love, LOVE this story. I have now become an M.M.Kaye fan and will read all her books. I had always heard about this writer but something always threw me off from starting to read her, until some authors on a writers' loop just raved about her writing and the subject of the Raj. I found this copy on a used book table at my library. It took me a few chapters to get into, but once the 'real' story started, I couldn't put it down. It had me up till the wee hours on more than one night.

I first read this story as a teenager, sneaking it off of my older cousin's bookshelf (since I was considered too young to be reading such things...probably was). I had never read anything like it. It is an epic story, from the story of the protagonists to the history of India during the British occupation. The story at times is brutal but so was that time. I highly recommend. It isn't a quick read. It is an intelligent and intense story. For me, it has proven to be one for the ages.

Always an MM kaye fan. She writes so evocatively and passionately about India and the Raj. A great insight into history and life in India during the Raj, told compassionately and with so much love for the Indian people. Sweeping and somehow poignant, Winter s story will have you relive the sepoy mutiny of 1857.

This is simply the best epic ever written. Kaye's writing is so beautiful and eloquent. It is a great piece of historical fiction as well as a love story. This is not the most intellectual book I have ever read, but it is the only one that I have read 5 times!
