Gruesome, creepy and gripping. C. J. Box is top notch at keeping the story flowing and believable. This is my first by him. Am working on my second. Will probably read all his work. He is right up there with my favorite writer of crime/suspense: Micheal Connelly.

This novel is finely crafted with a fast paced plot, super characterization, and so believable! I did not want to read it at night because I was afraid I would think about it so much that sleep would not come! If it wasn't so graphic, I would rate it five star!

The only thing that really bothered me was I spent half the book accepting Cody Hoyt as a flawed good guy and then the scenario completely changed. I'm certainly not an author, but I didn't see the reason for such a radical change. The story is very gripping and a real page turner.

I was surprised about halfway through the book, didn't expect that, and I will not give it away here. I expect another book from this series, and look forward to it. Thanks Mr. Box, I have read all your books, and enjoyed them all.

The Highway was another the store.com gift book to M.E.S.
M.E.S. says back to me in one of our "Go Fish" back and forth letters from Montana to California
"One of the books you sent me was to introduce me to the writer C.J. Box from Cheyenne, Wyoming. This particular novel included long hauler truckers, the detective character an alcoholic named Cody Hoyt, with a woman partner named Cassie Dewell. Cody has been dropped from the force for his drinking, but is trying to make a comeback by solving this case, however just when you start to like Cody, he gets shot and that's the end of him. I was absolutely disgusted with CJ Box as a writer by this time. Cassie Dewell keeps working on the case and the novel comes to an acceptable conclusion in the end, and I have to admit I did enjoy the book, so when I noticed a couple CJ Box books at a boy scout fund raiser, I bought them. These were along the same lines but in this case the main character is Joe Pickett the Game Warden for the Big Horn country of Wyoming. (I had driven over the same mountains at one time because I had a wrong map). The place names are all familiar to anyone who ever rode in the Bighorns. Joe is a very married guy, his wife Marybeth and his daughters Sheridan and Lucy who figure prominently in the novel. After reading three of those CJ Box books, I am interested in what the daughters are going to do next. I've red two of the Joe Pickett novels and also the Highway novel you sent. I'm hooked on C.J. Box. All of his books are Great! THANK YOU."
Due to his interest, I'm going to be sending M.E.S. the upcoming the store.com new release in March of 2014 by C.J. Box called "Stone Cold", another Joe Pickett novel for M.E.S.'s birthday. Go Fish

Have read & enjoyed all CJ Box's previous novels.
Was extremely disappointed with this "average' story.
It seems like a "fill in" book while the author actually comes up with a better plot for his next more creative narrative.
I think if CJ Box was not the author & readers read the story not knowing the author many would consider it pretty average with a plot that is very common.

I absolutely have always enjoyed every C.J. Box book I have ever read. NOT SO ON THIS ONE! He kills off a super character for no reason unless it is to create a female character hero for the next book. I was really disappointed that he did not work with a character that had flaws to improve them as he had done with the character in the past. The character had overcome severe adversity in the past and would have risen to the occasion to conquer his flaws again. To kill off a character the way he did absolutely in my view was wrong. The character should have had a better chance to redeem himself.
I lost all interest in following the story line afterwards and just wanted to finish and get on to another book.

I discovered C.J. Box while browsing at a Barnes & Noble. The first book was, "Cold Wind." This was the beginning of the "Joe Pickett" series. I have read every book out by C. J. Box and enjoyed all of them.
The Highway is about a villain who is a long-haul truck driver, He preys upon prostitutes and female runaways at truck stops. The victims are kidnapped, tortured, and subsequently killed. The reader will discover other "bad guys," however, I will not give that away. It is important for the reader to be totally surprised.
The Highway is not a "Joe Pickett" series. It is about Cody Hoyt (from Back & Beyond), an alcoholic cop.
I am a retired police officer in the Los Angeles area (31 yrs) and I spend many hours reading. I usually read crime novels, and I am very critical about the plots. I enjoy C.J. Box's novels. He is very good with his: Characters, plots. the "emotional rides," the scenes, and how to end his books.
I tried not to give out too much information on "The Highway." I want all readers to be completely surprised.

Could'nt hardly put this one down! Well written and covers a only a few days - actually closer to a day. The characters are believeable and not overdrawn. Interesting situations that could actually happen. CJBox has a hit

Good book. Joe Pickett is never mentioned at all. Cody Hoyt, another CJ Box character, is in the book, but as a supporting character only.
ATTENTION the store: THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING. I bought this book because I thought is was a Joe Pickett novel. I might have bought it anyway and it was a good read. You need to remove the Joe Pickett reference in your heading for this book.

CJ Box continues to surprise me...this is one that will make you uncomfortable in your easy chair even if you have an idea of what is coming. I look forward to his one-offs as much as the Joe Pickett series.

Intense story abut the dangers on the open road. Disturbing, yet engaging. New characters are developed that will be in CJ's next books. Loves the discription of the Yellowstone region and it's beauty. Good read and it will make you think twice about pissing off a trucker.

Could not put the book down.... Yet I kept closing the book to calm down my fears and picked it up to continue. I totally was invested with the characters and picturing the events as they occurred. Great read!

Joe Pickett is a great character. I loved the complex faults in Cody Hoyt's character development. BUT ! I am hopeful that we'll see more of the Cassandra Dewell character. Very interesting possibilities.

Very good, and some unpredictable events that make it not such a typical thriller. I recommend it if wanting something different, but the subject matter is the darkest Box has done yet. I was disturbed.

Not the usual cops and robbers or international spy stuff. Instead find the local game warden in a western U.S. setting dealing with bad guys and everyday life. I find his writings very easy to identify with and enjoy all he has written.
