I love the Joe Pickett novels ... they're always page turners
and he doesn't give away the "bad guy" until late in the
book. The description of his love for his kids and wife
is so real ... you feel his love and also his pain. I would
recommend this book.

I wish everyman was like Joe Pickett. His conscience and above average values transforms him into a hero of the world in which he lives. I like to think there is someone out in the West that truly cares for the land and its inhabitants. I plan on reading all the Joe Pickett novels.

A different angle of Government inte-ragency relationships. As the great grandson - both sides - homesteaded the area
it was fun letting my mind chose where Saddlestring would be, if it existed.. Who knows, it might not be too far from the Legendary Lost Cabin Gold Mine.

As always, very well written. By the time you get to the last page, you want another episode to start. Love the way he characterizes Wyoming and its people. I have lived here all my life and have seen most of the areas he covers in his books. Awesome.

Another taut well-written story about a good, down-to-earth man who is faced with impossible choices and does his best to find the lightest "grey" areas between black and white. As a voracious reader, I highly recommend all of Box's books.

While the best part of the latest Pickett tale may be the majestic scenery, there is no doubt that Box can spin a yarn. Melinda Strickland is so evil you can taste it. However, there's a fine edge separating evil and parody of evil. She, along with some of the rest of the cast, are put in situations that cross the line. My recommendation? If you find yourself among the skeptics as I did, just think about the scenery. You'll be too cold to worry about credulity.

Winterkill brings the same fine storytelling and excellent sense of character and place found in Box's previous Pickett novels. Kudos to Box, who has quickly become one of my favorites.
The only thing that prevents me from giving this book five stars is the unforgiveably sloppy editing. One character is christened both "Trey" and "Terry" - on the same page. A crucial event in the novel - the abandonment of April - is referred to as having happened three years ago, then in another mention, five years ago. The book is also filled with distracting typos, including several double words ("he saw that that the snow had melted" type things). Errors of this kind are unfortunate and distracting in a book of this caliber. I can only assume the publisher was overly eager to get the next book by this award-winning author on the shelves.

The Pickett mysteries/thrillers are remarkable stories! The author weaves a page turner every time. The characters show depth and the Wyoming geography is aptly described. Totally enjoy these books!
