Another Joe Pickett novel, more of his charming and challenging characters. Pickett is real, he has flaws and limitations, but still manages to maintain his determination and love of family. Love the setting in Wyoming.

C J Box writes a different and compelling story this time out. The murder of Pickett's father-in-law (of sorts) is grisly. Anyone who follows the Pickett family saga knows that his mother-in-law would be tough to like in the best of circumstances. Box perfectly portrays Pickett's angst at searching for the truth in the midst of his tormentor's misfortune.
I could do with less of the "foster-daughter" storyline - it adds nothing to the ongoing story and makes for depressing reading.
The relationship between Pickett and his wife is always interesting and Box never settles for easy or trite.

This is an excellent Joe Pickett novel with murder and mystery and Joe's social climber mother-in-law Missy. It is a story that strains the Pickett family's relationships while they try to solve the mystery surrounding the death of Missy's husband. A very good read which I recommend to anyone.
