What a great book, since the rebel flag is under attack I wanted to know more about the Civil War, which I am pleased to have learned. Robert E Lee was an amazing commander that listened to his staff

Book cam in excellent condition. I just started to read it recently though b/c my civil war class was reading "Killer Angels", a civil war novel written by this author's brother. I can't wait to finish it.

This book is different from most civil war books in that it shares an in depth look at the leaders on both sides of the battlefield. It gives the reader the feeling of "knowing" these men on a personal level. I was very moved by their private lives and thoughts. Even though they were aggressive in battle, they were sometimes fragile and sensitive in private.

very interesting It seems to me that the civil war was not necessary. what a waste of lives. I don't think the leaders of the both armies were necessarily good in their capacities as military leaders . but I enjoyed reading the story and the history

This book was a wonderful blend of history in fact combined with the probable thoughts, beliefs, and morals of those living at that time who were so closely involved with those events. It is a book that I could hardly put down. I felt like I was more than a spectator.

It's not a terrible read, however this author has trouble putting together a grammatically correct sentence. Where was his editor? You may call this his writing style, but I call it lazy and incoherent. My ninth grader's teacher would fail him if he wrote like this. I'm surprised she put it on his reading list. It's not just an occasional gaff; the author does it consistently. While the story line is interesting, this book is annoying to read.

My only complaint is about Jeff. I LOVE his other work but I keep getting distracted by the heavy use of "...." throughout the entire book. I assume that he is attempting to create a thoughtful pause but it isn't necessary and I have not seen it his other work. Otherwise it's fantastic.

I've just recently finished reading this Trilogy. I thought it the most moving
history of the Civil War. Taking history in school barely scratched the surface
compared to this trilogy. Hard to put down.

Excellent read. Similar style as Jeff's father's "The Killer Angels". A comfortable reading which enables the reader to feel a part of history. An excellent way to learn more of what happened in the early parts of the Civil War with several of the key players. Would be a good vehicle for high school students to learn a bit of history in a very enjoyable manner.
