I really love the expanse books, but this short story is not worth the money. A fairly generic storyline, the only thing it has to do with the expanse series is that it is set on mars. I loved the other books but I can't help thinking that with this one he just wanted to make a quick buck.

I began reading The Expanse series when I saw promos for the television show & I loved it! I didn't want to rip through the entire book series as I know the source material exceeds the show but as the show will be returning soon, I figured reading a couple more wouldn't hurt. Gods of Risk was the next on my list & while it's a novella, I think it was a worthy entry in the series. My favorite aspect of The Expanse universe is what's going on politically and socially so I quite enjoyed this look in at Mars on a micro level with Bobbie's nephew, David. I won't spoil the details but let's just say he's good at chemistry and not too attendant to the news of the conflict between Mars and Earth. He rang true as a fifteen year old from beginning to end. I liked getting a look at the rest of Bobbie's family and while neither they nor she are the main story here, it was enough to also give more of a sense of her life and what she was going through since Book 2. LeeLee was such a thin character that she never came across as worth all the angst spent on her; I don't know if she was rendered that way on purpose but she was the weakest part of the story though she was a major catalyst. I'd recommend this to fans of the series. It's a good little detour in The Expanse universe.

For the love of everything good in the universe never let Eric Davies do another Expanse audio book or any other audio book I want to read. His voice is brutal, and his character voices are foolish. Listening to him makes me physically angry. Beyond that the short story is a waste of time. The only good character is Bobby, and she is not in it enough. The main character, David, is completely unsympathetic. However, I must admit I might be tainted by the droning voice of slow death which is Eric Davies.

Not sure how it will fit in with big story, so for now 4 stars, as I do not see it as significant. No chapters, one POV.
OK read, recommended but not necessary as far as I can see, but that may change when I read the other books in the series, currently reading Abaddon's Gate, Expanse #03.
Reasonably long read (took me too long) for the price, more than a shorty or novella, just not long enough to be counted as a novel, I think.

Hard to fathom the purpose of this novella. The characters were not sympathetic or really very interesting. I was pleased to see Bobbie make an appearance, but even she didn't come off very well except at the end. The rest of the characters and the plot line just didn't seem to fit into anything that would advance the storyline of the Expanse, and without that, there is nothing to this novella at all. I was overall very disappointed.

I love Bobbie Draper, but this wasn't her story. Her nephew was neither interesting nor likable.
The story was a retread, and the sci-fi was superficial. This is not at all at the level we have come to expect.
(And the title had nothing at all to do with the story.)

Possibly the most interesting character in the expanse saga gets his own bit of origin story. It's gritty and fascinating and outside of any normal set of relationships or character traits we're so well trained to understand.
I loved it.
I loved it.

I agree with most the other reviewers, a good short story. I read it in one sitting because I really enjoyed it. Well worth your time. It fleshed out what life on mars is like in the expanse universe (the third party kind of left out of the first two main books) with a cameo appearance from a character from Caliban's War. Great series, 5 Stars.

I enjoying this tangent, as it provides insight into the universe created in the series, showing Bobbie's family and developing the infrastructure of Mars. It's nice to have this short Romeo & Juliet-esque story to tide me over until June's release of the hird book in the series.

I do agree with some of the other reviewers - it's a short read (one sitting for me) and it focuses mostly on a new character not featured in any of the previous books. However, I'm still giving it 5 stars because - it's great for a $3 novella. I am also delighted with the way they are rolling out this series - major novels with some short stories sprinkled in between to keep your interest and tell some background stories that wouldn't necessarily fit in the main narratives.
So if you've ever read some sci-fi and can't help but notice that the space station setting really isn't THAT different than different than your local mall (but with aliens) - this is the series for you. It's a fun read in a solar system where getting from Earth to Saturn is not like taking your car down the block. Can't wait for the next story!
