While I didn't care for the heroine initially and was a little puzzled by Joe's attraction to her, Kleypas' writing drew me onward and about 15% of the way into the book, I was hooked. Joe was never one of the loud, extroverted Travises, so I didn't expect him to suddenly be the big, boisterous alpha male. Not to say he wasn't sexy. Personally, I prefer a more self-assured, restrained hero which is just what he is.
Avery took some time to like but once I knew her background, everything she did and said was completely in character.
As always, the secondary characters and subplots were as intriguing as the main plot & characters. I will definitely read it again and that's my definition of a 5 star.

Such a disappointment. I've loved so many of Lisa Kleypas's books, I accidentally preordered this one twice. With engaging characters, and excellent quips. This felt more like a quickly churned our harlequin romance. The first few of the Travis family books I loved, especially the first. If you're looking for a book because of that? This will be an utter disappointment, with no character development, or even really a believable love story.

Waited so many years for this book, could not wait to buy it!! But what a disappointment. Did not live up to the others books in the series, and the plot in the story was very thin. As if the author ran out of ideas.

I've been reading some reviews here and have been shocked at the ridiculous expectations fans of Lisa Kleypas had for this book. I can only ask: what the check did you expect and can you write it yourself?
I thought it was a great story and really enjoyed it. I laughed, I worried. I really liked the secondary characters and loved the main ones. It would've helped if Lisa had slipped into Joe's point of view once or twice as most writers do theses days so we readers could understand his feelings better. His development as a character would've benefited. But I'm not the least sorry that I spent $12 for a Lisa adventure. I would buy and read it again.

Lisa Kleypas brings back the Travis family one last time and I have to say I have been waiting a long time for this story. Sadly this story just wasn't something I felt connected to. I normally read books from start to finish without taking a break but I actually went to sleep in the middle of the book. I wish Lisa Kleypas would have provided a little more drama in the story line for us. I loved that we saw the rest of the family but we didn't hear enough about Churchill, I was disappointed in his death and thought we should have seen more of his relationship with Joe and how they worked everything out.

Very disappointed. We waited years for Joe's story. Flat, bland, boring. Did not have the same depth or character development that the majority of LK's books have. Steep asking price at $13, and had to force myself to finish it. Lisa Kleypas was once one of my favorite writers, so talented and articulate. So many writers these days self publish garbage with poor grammar, clichéd plots, and unbelievable characters. While this book has some great writing moments, overall it feels half hearted and without passion. Did not like the lead, and Joe was an underdeveloped afterthought. Read it if you must, to close the series, but lower your expectations and then go back and re-read the first 3 books to lift your spirits.

As the last Travis brother, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Joe & Avery. I read it very quickly, it kept me glued to the page. So very good. (Ella and jack are still my fave but!) this was a beautiful ending to the Travis family. It would be super cool to maybe later have like a reunion, like with their kids and have like a date night or something. Very good read. Sigh. The Travis men are always a sexy, hot, alpha treat you just can't resist.

Finally, Lisa Kleypas is back! I was actually worried that she was going through a divorce, health problems or a serious loss of her muse. So after waiting for a new release since Crystal Cove, I couldn't have been more excited when I heard Joe Travis's story would be up next.
Brown-Eyed Girl had all the things I love about a Lisa Kleypas contemporary. The charming story, the compellingly woven world around the heroine (after having put the San Juan islands on my travel bucket list, I almost started considering adopting an old chihuahua) and yes, the sensual hero.
My favourite part of the book may actually have been the scenes with Jack & Ella, the H&H in Smooth Talking Stranger. Loved their banter and how they lovingly made fun of each other. Hearing from them through an outsider's perspective really added something to their already brilliant story.
I would have given five stars if I'd understood what Joe saw in Avery better. It felt like he fell too fast, having given his heart before he learned a single positive thing about her. Would have been nice to see that grow a little more, to understand what distinguished her from the usual hordes of women chasing him. He seemed a little too understanding towards someone who could have treated him with more respect and his character could have used a little more depth overall.
Oh well, the poor guy made up for it in the romance department though ;-)

Lisa Kleypas has proven once again what a brilliant storyteller she is. I love Brown-Eyed Girl.....and I love the Travis'. Theses Travis men are men's men....yet gentlemen, tender, loyal and sincere. I love them and I love the story of Joe and Avery.

Brown- Eyed Girl started off on the wrong foot and got better and better...until it leveled out at ok to pretty good. Any fan of LK will consider this a must read but new readers may miss the depth of character building I've come to expect from this author.
