Extremely interesting. What an amazing man. Just so you know it ends when he is VP and President McKinley dies and the kindle book is only about 80%. I was surprised but should have realized it's about the Early years and Rise of Theodore. Would recommend and want to read the next book about his presidency.

Well written and researched. This book is an easy read, filled with facts, not readily known. The book is for history buffs who enjoy a non academic exploration of historical figures. I gave this book a high rating because I think the author was conscious in balancing his obvious Republican love with a need to be historically correct. I thought it amazing that he includes the 1868 convention antidote on Lynch knowing the defection of dixiecrats en mass to the Republican party after the1968 Democratic convention.

A really great book by a really great historian. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading of this book. The picture of Theodore Roosevelt is one of a great man who enjoyed being president, enjoyed being a father, and just plain enjoyed life. In fact, he was bigger than life!

What was a classic when first published and awarded the Pulitzer Prize has stood the test of time. I recently re-read it and reviewed it for a book club and the consensus was "one of the best biographies ever written".
This thorougholy engaging historical giant emerges on the scene as a classic Greek hero. Edmund Morris has updated his original version with the mostg recent scholarship and research on TR to give it a fresh spin. I would recommend this book to anyone who shakes their heads overf todays political climate, loves to read history or just plain likes good literature. I read the next book THEODORE REX, and am looking forward to the third volume which was recently published.

Excellent book regarding Theodore Roosevelt. It was very well researched and well written. I learned a lot of things about him that I had not read previously. He has always been a favorite of mine. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves American history and Theodore Roosevelt.

The range of Theodore Roosevelt's interests and achievements as well as the almost brute force of his personality would make him unmanageable by most writers. Yet, this first book in Edmund Morris' definitive biographical trilogy on T. R., like the following two, is written with both a scholar's discipline in research and documentation and an adventure novelist's happy talent for savoring the chase by turning apt and witty phrases while bringing to life a larger-than-life character.

The only peccadillo is a bit too much emphasis on Teddy's teeth that becomes in itself long in the tooth after a while. I would have edited each book down by about 50 pages. Nevertheless, Thank You, Edmund Morris, for one of the most enjoyable reads ever for this lifelong bibliophile.

Very readable and well paced. Amazing how today's political events can be seen echoed 100+ years ago. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in TR and/or politics. Fascinating look at how TR was both a product of and counterpoint to Historical Republican policies.

Very well written and informative. This is an excellent, rather detailed account of TR's life up to his being elected President of the U.S.. This book kept me involved, even when I thought it was getting a bit long in detail. It all flowed so well that I was past those parts and engrossed as ever in the unusual life of the Roosevelt clan. I look forward to the next book in the series. Thanks

Holy moly, this book is long. Its fascinating, if a bit esoteric at times, but it definitely takes some time to read. Probably not well suited for someone looking for a more casual, relaxing book, but if you're looking at Teddy bio's I don't think casual read is what you had in mind.

President Roosevelt did all sorts of fun things from childhood through old age that really make him an interesting character to read about and learn from. This book covers his life from birth to his first day as POTUS and is sure to inspire you. At almost 800 pages some sections will be a little tedious to read but the majority of the book is very entertaining.

First started this book about 25 years ago and loved it, but it was a borrowed copy and I never got back to it until I found the digital copy. So glad I found it once again and loved every minute. I'll look for the next volume.

This book captures the character of Roosevelt and the experiences that shaped his personality and made him what he was. It also provides a clear look at the politics and politicians who shaped the Nation at a critical time in our history. I have read all three of the books on TR.

A fantastic book. I was so impressed with his honesty and his desire and ability to get things accomplished. A polished, sophisticated gentleman who was able to respect and care about others who were not in his financial circles.
Mr. Morris, gave much life and action to the book along with witty charm as to Mr. Roosevelt's personality.
He was well loved by his constituents and I wish I was around during his presidency.
A very well written book definitely about a wonderful man and president.

A wonderful in depth account of the life of Theodore Roosevelt with the intention of showing the details of his life style and the motives behind his actions using quotes from his letters and other accounts of conversations. It showed his humanity both the good and the bad. This book also provides a great education on how this man help shape the way America is today. I highly recommend the audio version of the book. Great audio book for travel.

There were parts of this book that were riveting and I devoured every word. However, there were also many overly long and tedious sections that made reading ponderous. As purported, this was about the rise of Theodore Roosevelt, but still, there were many family details that were simply not covered at all, including any mention of his brother Elliott's daughter, Eleanor. I appreciated the comprehensive coverage of many aspects of his "rise," but, there were simply too many verbose passages. In all, I found it to be a great book, just wish it had been edited more carefully

Simply wonderful and a tour de force. Biography really does not get any better than this. The character of Theodore Roosevelt is fascinating enough on its own, but Edmund Morris delves into that character deeply and shows you facets of it that the reader eventually assembles into a comprehensive whole. The author does not do your thinking for you, but his depth of research, respect for his subject and captivating writing style compel the reader to conclude that TR was one of the most fascinating people who have ever drawn breath. This has to be the definitive work of the man's life up to the moment he assumes the presidency. I cannot recommend this book enough.

“The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt” is the first volume in a three-volume series about the life of the 26th president, covering Roosevelt’s life up to his presidency. This masterpiece of biography is meticulously researched and fabulously detailed, yet is enjoyable to read. What lies within is an insightful examination of Teddy’s life and his character. And Roosevelt lived a life full to the brim. He was a published author, New York Assemblyman, North Dakota ranchman, U.S. Civil Service Commissioner, New York City Police Commissioner, Assistant Secretary of the Navy,
Colonel of the First U.S. Cavalry (the “Rough Riders”), Governor of New York, and Vice President of the United States—all by the age of 42. While this is a comprehensive and fascinating introduction to Teddy Roosevelt, it is both detailed and lengthy; this is not one of those effortless popular biographies.

Edmund Morris truly captures the spirit of Theodore Roosevelt, the political and natural environments in which he operated, the people who helped shape him as well as those who challenged him. In addition, the reader comes to understand that TR had a wide array of interests and wrote on a great many subjects from the War of 1812 to biographies, to the natural environment of his beloved Dakotas. You see how these interests helped shape the man who would pursue conservation, military victory, and government reform. It is a must read for anyone interested in American history and/or politics of the late 1800s.

Thought book was well written and quite interesting, Although the narrative of his earliest years got to be tedious and I found myself skimming quite a bit. Have gone on to purchase Theodore Rex and so far (about 1/4 into it) that book is equally excellent if not more so. Amazing individual!

Besides being one of my favorite presidents, Roosevelt was truly a man of many talents, abilities, and actions that Edmund Morris eloquently describes in this book. I found the chapter by chapter (in which each chapter represents a year of his life)description very interesting and unique. The amount of data given and how Morris ties it together is truly artful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the early years of Theodore Roosevelt.

Superb account of TR's life, challenges and triumphs, but disappointing in its abrupt end as he becomes President. Easy to follow his many interests and usually the confusion of NY politics. He is still hard to grasp as a person-- unreal in terms of his life and interests, including his family life.

A thorough and engaging look into the life of one of our greatest presidents. Morris has a knack for taking you out into the wilderness, as if you're right there, breathlessly following a man always on the move. This book might actually have inspired me to visit the Dakotas for the first time. Up next: Theodore Rex.

This biography of Theodore Roosevelt won a Pulitzer prize and when you read it you will see why. There are mountains of material available about Roosevelt's life, but Morris has distilled the essentials that bring to life the spirit of the man and his time. It's an exciting and uplifting tale. The prose carries you along - it's poetic, intellectually stimulating, as befits the visionary quality of the subject's life.

The Roosevelts fascinate and Theodore is the most intriguing of all. Despite having read a significant amount about this man, "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt," taught me so much more than I had expected. I'd recommended it for everyone interested in history, politics, and - above all - psychology.

Edmund Morris writes both a comprehensive, objective and engaging biography of Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt is presented both in terms of his remarkable accomplishments, failures, and the foibles that make him an engaging study both in terms of his office (such as NYC Police Commissioner, NY State Legislator, and New York Governor) and his remarkable character.

A GREAT read. Roosevelt himself was a good writer and Morris found so much of his writings that he needed to put it all in three books. He included material from Roosevelt's friends and adversaries that provide a great overview into those times. Its a genuine time machine!!!

All three of Morris' books on Roosevelt were excellent reads. An exhaustive record of one of the most remarkable men in our nation's history. This is not light reading; it's clearly more of a scholarly work and quite thorough and well referenced. However, the author paints a clear picture of a man our country was fortunate to have.

I thought it was very interesting and I found out a lot about the politics in the late 1800's which is very similar to our times.
History does repeat itself. I do need to read on about Roosevelt's presidency, this stopped at that point.

Well researched, entertaining chronicle of the developmental years of a remarkable man, of a sort we don't see today. I could hardly put it down. Morris is a superb writer, and captures the nature and personality of his subject intelligently and effectively. This book must be read in tandem with Theodore Rex, about which I would say the same things. One wishes for a world like this, and a man like this, today.

Good book. Really gave me some insights into not only the personality of Roosevelt (far beyond just charging up San Juan hill.) But more interesting still was the level of corruption both in society and especially politics.

A really good book, winner of a Pulitzer, and the first of a trilogy – Theodore Rex and Colonel Roosevelt are the other two. I didn’t know very much about TR, and, since he’s usually listed as one of our best Presidents, I thought I’d find something out about him. This book painted a good picture of him personally and professionally. He basically helped bring the US into the 20th century from a third rate to a first rate power. He built up our military, helped established our National Parks and the Forest Service, was the first to invite an African_American to dinner at the White House (Booker T. Washington), wrote a lot of books, established a treaty to build the Panama Canal and was basically what we’d call a Progressive Republican. Overall, I don’t think I would have liked him either personally or professionally – he was an egotist, a hawk, an imperialist and liked to relax mostly by killing things. His favorites were bear, bison, antelope and Spaniards. He founded the Boone and Crockett Club, which protects wildlife from extinction so there are enough animals around to be shot and killed. It’s long, around 800 pages, but a good read and I highly recommend it.

The most engrossing biography I've ever written. I have a new appreciation for both theodore Roosevelt, and Edmund Morris. Halfway through the second volume, Theodore Rex. I am enjoying the feeling of being dropped into the early 1900's as a "fly on the wall" during some of the most intriguing moments of history.

This biography takes you deeply into the private life of one of the most fascinating and brilliant leaders of our country. While it is completely fact based, the writing style is such that even a die-hard novel reader will appreciate and enjoy. So if you are someone who has shied away from historical biographies, treat yourself to a discovery of a great man and a colorful description of his times. I cannot wait to begin the second book in this series.

This book was recommended by my brother, and was well worth the time. Apparently Teddy Roosevelt was a special person - not just someone in the right place at the right time - but someone who changed the world by the force of his own energy.

Theodore Roosevelt was our most colorful and entertaining president ever and Mr. Morris is the biographer he deserves. This book is important, accurate, and extremely well written. It is also great fun. Morris has a wonderful writing style and a knack for letting TR speak for himself. All of this adds up to a book that is both important, absorbing, and a joy to read.

A very well written book about the political life of Roosevelt but I like a more family environment reading. It really told us that government runs the same today as it day in Roosevelt's time. Great History reading. Jo
