Purchased this (& several other) Golden Books for my kids (under 5 yrs old). The artwork is nice but the story is rather pointless. One of the redeeming qualities of these classic old books is a redemptive theme or underlying character message. The man essentially tips farm animals in his dump truck for fun. Given the great reviews, I suppose I had hoped for more.
Two alternatives from the same classic period I would recommend exponentially over this: The Fire Engine Book (heroism, courage) or Animal Orchestra (instrument recognition/introduction, teamwork).
p.s. - Kudos to the store for the 4-for-3 promotion.

All these Little Golden Books remind me of my childhood and love them all. However, I purchased this one for my 2yo daughter. It is just fine, but it describes putting the farm animals in the back of the truck then dumping it. Really not a problem to me as an adult, but I don't want my child to think that that type of play is acceptable as it is a touch aggressive/violent (for lack of better words). I am not usually this type of person obsessed with safety and being PC and all, but I tossed this book. Just my opinion.

Miryam, The Happy Man and His Dump Truck (Golden Press, 1950)
I have to admit, I am at a loss to explain the enduring popularity of this book at Goat Central. My wife, who originally had our copy when she was a toddler, tells me it was one of her younger brother's favorites when he was two or three years old, and now the Bean can't go more than two or three days without this one coming right back into rotation. It could be Tibor Gergely's illustrations, which have an interesting, kind of Asian feel to them at times (the dog sliding down the dump truck has a definite Chinese dragon feel to him). It could be Miryam's use of repetition, which effectively takes the place of the usual rhythm and rhyme one finds in Golden Books from the forties and fifties and does it one better, with more subtlety in diction (if not in content) than I'm used to. Whatever it is, the Bean adores this book. It may hold the current record for most times read. If not, it's in the top five. *** ½

This a such a cute and great classic. I remember being read this story by my Grandmother and Mother as a little girl. It was one of my favorites. Once I had a son of my own it quickly became one of his favorites too as I read it to him, over, and over, and over again. I love classic Little Golden Books like this, they truly are timeless and can be spread throughout the generations. The dump truck man is such a breath of fresh air in his cheery demeanor and how he treats everyone he meets, including farm animals, like they are friends of his. My son always liked how the animals got such a great ride from the man and got to have such a fun time.
Got to love the wonderful classics!
5/5 Stars by far!!!!
