This should not be categorized as historical fiction. Or literature, for that matter. What a colossal waste of time. Terrible story development, unbelievably bad writing. Do not waste your time - I'm so sorry that I did.

Good plot and horrendous editing which was distracting throughout the reading. The word 'bemused' is used 3 times in 2 short paragraphs - and incorrectly at least once. Awkward phrasing - 'she went and sat down' is used dozens of times (nobody does something unless they 'went' first. (I think we learned not to write like this in early high school.) This author should tell is/her story idea to someone who knows how to write or get an editor.

I would give this 2 1/1 stars if that were an option. Again, the story is good but a good editor could have made this book so much better.

Enjoyed reading The House. My only complaint is the sudden switch in the telling of the tale. I want to know more about Edward and Anna. We're there any repercussions to their relationship due to the child's parentage. There was a recap for Clara but not Anna. And did Partridge finally get her deserved downfall for the way she treated Clara? The descriptions of the Armstrong House are fantastic.

Loved reading about the Armstrongs and their ancestral home. The first part of this book was mostly sweet with the exception of Sinclair. The other two parts of this book were not quite as easy going but amazing none the less. A O'Connor has quite a knack for drawing readers into the story. Can't wait to read the next book.

This historical novel shows the cast systems of the Irish hierarchy vs the peasants who served them. It takes you thru the potato famine, WW I and the Irish fight for independence, thru the eyes of the aristocrats and how they fought against change. The family depicted, the Armstrongs, help to make this a pleasant read.

Absolutely thrilled with this book, it had me engrossed from the very first page and was unputdownable. Loved the storyline, the authors style of writing, in fact my ideal book. 5 * thoroughly deserved

I agree with other reviewers regarding grammar and editing.....both were appalling but no worse than some other books I’ve read. I would have given the book four stars except for that. The story was good and the characters likeable (or unlikeable). I am looking forward to Book Two.

I liked reading about the main character living in a loveless marriage with a hateful sister-in-law. She loved her husband but he was a jerk toward her. The details about the house were interesting. I found it hard to put the book done.

The Armstrong family being powerful and wealthy to being in dire need over the years kept me wondering what would happen next to save their family and Armstrong House. The background history of Ireland adds intrigue to this story.

This had a little bit of everything: suspense, history, greed, selfishness, love, hate, happy, sad, rich, poor, all wrapped up in a very easy to read novel. I'll be on the lookout for more A. O'Connor books.

This was a very good book. I especially loved the twists and turns in the plot - always something unexpected. I’ve already downloaded the second book in this series. I’m looking forward to reading it next.

This was poorly written. I can't find anything about the author and I wonder if it was written as a fifth grade class project! And I see that this is one of a series. I won't be reading the others. Historical fiction about Ireland is usually interesting to me but I suppose I demand a higher level of writing.
