Collects Superman: Red Son issues #1-3

There is so much more to this story than this brief synopsis, but here's something to whet your appetite: What if Superman's ship had originally landed in Russian instead of America? What if he had grown up under a Communist regime? Would he still grow up to be a hero, or would he become something else?

After years of having this book hyped up to me, you would think that it wouldn't be able to live up the hype, but it more than did.

At first I was thinking that it wasn't as good as everyone was saying it was, but once I got into the book a little more, I fell in love with it too.

Like many alternate reality stories, it puts familiar people in unusual roles, but this book has some deeper things to say about philosophy and politics. The world isn't black and white, and Mark Millar does a good job of writing a gray world with realistic stakes and unlikely heroes.

There have already been very detailed reviews of this product and I fully support them. This is one great book and is great for a long time DC fan or anyone who has even heard of Superman before. It does not require the reader to have any further knowledge on the existing characters. Great art and wonderful story.

When asked about what story to read from a someone who never read a Superman story a lot of people suggested Red Son. So I decided to pick up a copy. It's a good story but not great. It's also an alternate universe Superman. For my money, if your looking for a great Superman story you should read "A Superman For All Seasons."
Forged in Ash (A Red-Hot SEALs Novel Book 2) :: Forged in Smoke (A Red-Hot SEALs Novel Book 3) :: Forged in Ember (A Red-Hot SEALs Novel Book 4) :: Red Badge of Courage: Novel-Ties Study Guide :: Red Gold: A Novel (Night Soldiers Book 5)

Like many other reviewers of this paperback collection, I have never been a big Superman fan (just too darn powerful). But this is awesome and I intend to buy the hardcover. A truly daring Superman deconstruction-- landing in the Ukraine instead of Smallville, raised in Stalinist Russia, etc.Alternative history at its best.

The story is amazing and worth a read. Hopefully they'll do an animated movie from this source it was that good. Marvel stories are good for fun and entertainment. DC stories are more character driven and engaging. This is one of this stories but well worth reading you'll enjoy it all the way through.

Always heard this was a great read, but just never got around to it. What a treat! Great reimagined story of all our favorite characters, and I mean GOOD reimagining not your typical "change a shade of black in their costume". Anyways...stop reading this review and read the book. Seriously, why are you still reading this? Go away. Read the book!!!!

One of the all time best Elsewhere stories. While I'm not a huge fan of Millar's, this may be his best in my opinion. Essentially a What If? story, Red Son asks the question of what would have happened to the DC universe if Superman's rocket had landed in the Soviet Union instead of the American Midwest. Instead of growing up the embodiment of the "American way" Supes becomes the champion of Stalin-era Marxism. With other creative re-imaginings of DC characters like Batman and a perfect study of the conflict between Supes and Lex Luthor (here the best hope of capitalist American to halt the spread of communism) the book is near perfect and features an amazing ending. A must own for DC and Superman fans.

WOW, what a spin on history; Luther and Superman at it again. Must read by all whether you are a Superman fan or not. Perception is an excellent tool to determine who is right and who is misguided...this is one of the most suspenseful and fun stories I have ever read.

Excellent take on a classic pop culture icon. It subverts the traditional narrative while staying true to what makes Superman..... Superman. It would be pretty cool if this was made into a movie but it's too much of a niche story green lit by a major film studio.

I have always enjoyed credible alternative tales of mainstream characters, and this is one of the best. It not only exemplifies the very traditions that first brought Superman to life, but implements some very fine, and creative science fiction that is not only believable, but quite enjoyable.
Well worth a read.

A very enjoyable read, especially because of the way they don't make Superman that much different despite his upbringing. He has a different vision, but at the core of things he believes he's doing things for the good of humanity. I like the takes on other heroes as well, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern all have a turn in the book. Good read for all sorts of readers and fans.

Interesting! and awesome! Love the alternate portrayals of the characters. Vastly different and yet somehow true to the character's core. A bit loose in the narrative though, hence why a 4/5 not a 5/5.

Mark Millar is a genius. His deconstruction of the DC universe is fascinating and brilliant. His depictions of Superman, Lex, Batman, and Wonder Woman show the depth's of Millar's understanding of the comic world.

One of the best Superman stories ever written. The ending blew my mind and literally gave meaning to the name Kal El (Or should I say Kal L). Good art, amazing story and iconic moments.. You won't regret reading this. Give it to someone who thinks Superman is a panzy and watch them recant their statement.
