Corpies (Super Powereds Spinoff Book 1)

There are other novelists who write about Superheroes . Hayes does it better . His characters have some depth . His plots aren't too thin . Books aren't too short . Pace is cannot put it down .
Try his other books , NPCs or Superpowered , for variety or more of the same if you enjoy this one . Worth every penny .
Drew , I would like to see a novel about someone in the DVA as a satire on SJWs' extremes .

I have read all of the Hayes' Super Powereds series, starting with Corpies and then starting from Year 1. I must say that this book is his best effort thus far. The main character "Titan" and the eponymous Corpies he is working with are the most developed and engaging in the series and there is far more world building in this novel than the last two of the Super Powereds books. Its a character study of a group of a very flawed man in a heroic profession attempting to put his life back together after a self-imposed exile, while shepherding a group of younger professionals with interesting motives and goals.
While the Powereds books seems to have stalled via excessive track laying during book 2. Corpies doesn't suffer the baggage of being set in a sometimes claustrophobic pseudo-academic setting of the main branch, which allows the author to play and build with the setting. A case in point being the introduction of a 10 story tall fire breathing plush toy.

A unique universe with great characters. I love the idea of lesser supers with media savvy using corporate sponsorship to fulfill their goal of helping others. I even more love the idea of how they interact with their 'hero liaison', the hero assigned to keep the Corpie team safe during their high publicized rescue operations. The gap between normal and supers and supers and heroes is well explored and the lesson of everyone's ability to contribute is gently hammered in (sly reference).

I had a very visceral connection to the characters and felt nervous for them, but generally the read was smooth and without excessive tension. Now, that said, regarding the climax which I can't discuss for spoilers, I can say I jumped up and down in my car seat when it happened. It's not expected, but the author sets it up well enough that it's not Deus Ex Machina (Hayes always seems to keep these outlandish concepts very believable within the universe). I'll never look at stuffed animal eyes the same way.

There were a lot of elements that are comparable to the D-List Supervillain series (a guilty pleasure), in that Corpies and the Super Powered series in general finds a unique angle on the superhero genre. It looks at the consequences of a world filled with people who have powers that they strive to control, can't control, or turn to evil. That said, Corpies is a more sweeping take on the idea from the perspective of a tainted idol (who means to rise above his past) and those around him.

A side note. A few reviewers commented on the main character being gay. Frankly, while it's a relevant point to establish the plot, you don't really notice, and I thought it odd that it was mentioned so often, especially since there is never even a hint of a love scene. This is not a book about a gay person, it's a book about a very uniquely awesome person and his sexuality doesn't drive the tone. Unless you have hangups, you'll love Owen for Owen, the BAMF that he is. And lord is he a BAMF. Go Titan!

You can read Corpies without the Super Powereds background. But, once you get a taste, you'll want to complete the entire series. If you came here from the Super Powereds series, you will NOT be disappointed, but the tone is slightly different due to the change in setting.

A different view of the world of Super Powereds. I just love Titan and how caring and awesome he is.
Titan used to be a hero, but left his work and his family and went into hiding after his affair was discovered, his affair being with another man just made everything worse. Years later, after his son told him he was a coward, he went back to being a hero and is trying to make up from his past mistakes.
After going back to the hero world, he starts working with a group of corpies, and even if at first he isn't too happy about it, he learns to like it. Not everyone is happy with him being back, but he shows them just how devoted he is to his work, and reminds him just how strong and capable he is. He shows them all that the world is safer with him in it.
He grows through the book and makes people around him grow too. And just like with Drew's other books, it's not only a good character, all of them are awesome, the story is awesome and the only thing I didn't like is that it ended, I just wanted more!

I'm looking forward to reading the edited version, I read Corpies as it was being posted as a serial novel originally. Titan is a powerhouse superhero with a heart of glass. Shattered by scandal years ago, his family broken apart by his own actions, he finally is taking steps towards becoming a hero again, and in doing so, redefines for himself, and those under him, what a hero is. The superhero action is rocking, but the character growth and philosophy is what keeps me rereading the archives again and again. You will not regret reading this book, even if you aren't normally a superhero genre fan, as it is so much more than just a superhero novel.

I found Drew Hayes through his NPCs series (which is also 5 star worthy), and grudgingly picked up his Powered Series ( I’m usually not a fan of superhero novels). I’m glad to say it was one of the best decisions book wise I’ve made in a while. Corpses is a wonderful addition to that universe, following the return of a Disgraced Hero back to the Supers world. The characters show good growth, and the book touches on some interesting issues. A very strong showing by Mr. Hayes, and I hope we get more like this.

I have been reading this online and am "super" excited to own it now! Drew writes a rich believable world of well developed well rounded characters. Titan, a Superman of super men, has lived in the shadows after being the subject of hige scandal thst tore his family and career apart. He decided to re enter the world of superheroes, and has to come to grips with himsef and his super life all over again His character as well as allthe others we meet are well defined and well rounded, and not driven or focused on just one aspect of their personality. A great read !

I became addicted.to the works of Drew Hayes from the moment I cracked the virtual spine on my free kindle edition of Superpowereds Year 1. I have read his collected works to date and am always anticipating the next regardless of series. Drew is fantastic at blending humor, realistic dialogue and and flawed characters with highly imaginative worlds to create a story that gets the reader invested. Of course, on his web serial, Superpowereds, he is also known for his painful cliffhangers that seemingly exist in every chapter. Corpies is a fantastic offshoot of the Superpowereds web serial and books with quite the original main character. I highly recommend the works of Drew Hayes.

This is another great addition to the super powereds world. It can stand alone. I'm ecstatic that the author decided to include Titan as the focus - his power and character have a real tangibility that is immediately present in the superpowered series but fleshed out in Corpies. I don't know why Drew Hayes isn't more popular.

I highly recommend this book. After finishing the Super Powereds series this was a great way to get back into that same world. Following Titan on his journey to being a full time Hero again was heart warming and exciting and I hope Drew Hayes keeps expanding the Hero world. I love every book!

A hell of a good read. The character arcs throughout this book make it well worth the read. Even thought it is set in the world of Drew's other book series, Super Powereds, it is not necessary to have read those books to enjoy Corpies (however, you should anyway. Obviously it helps flesh out the story more). There is no where else you can find a book this long (again, same with Super Powereds) with this much awesome stuff in it, for this price. Holy Mother of God, Drew Hayes is a BRILLIANT author. Once I finished the Super Powereds series, I needed MORE. I picked up Corpies and it was as good as, if not better than Super Powereds. Oh my, a "realistic" gay character. Thank you! You can't help but adore all of the characters in these stories and they will leave you with a desire for more. I look forward to reading other stories from the author because if they are anything like this, I will enjoy them.

I've been reading Drew's stuff for years. Started at the beginning of Super Powered, Fred the Vampire Accountant, etc.
Wasn't going to read Corpies until a friend I turned on to Drew's other stuff told me I "had" to read it.
And boy was he right. I could not stop "turning" to the next e-page.
I like how he explored things seldom touched at in the super hero worlds: commercialism in powers, corporate sponsorship, inter power politics, government regulation, sexuality choice as a career killer, etc.
A well thought out and fleshed out story and world. Can't wait for more. Get cracking Drew!

groan . . . groan . . . not near the best book of the last fifty I've read. I felt like I was ( off and on ) being preached at. And who likes that ? Over swears to shock... hmmm... and why do that ?
In the book, much is about bigotry and the aftermath of it . . . so well I've always been a "live and let live // God creates all types // we all got to get along" person . . . yeah . . .

Drew Hayes has created a world filled with superheroes that is believable and different from the mainstream. Corpies is his take on those heroes that are less powerful than the ones that fight super villians. Into this world, we are introduced to a flawed hero, who after years away returns to the superhero world as a corporate sponsored hero. He must adapt and change his methods to succeed. Related to his Super Powered Universe this is a great way to get into this universe. Pick it up now and you will not be disappointed.

Found superpowereds on audible. Listened to the first one in like 3 days. Bought the second. Proceeded to destroy that one and the next as well. Relistened to them before realizing Corpies was a thing. Also plowed through that one. Then found out Drew was writing fourth year and another EU book. Now I wait for those every week. Drew you're awesome. Keep it up. Literally giving them another go around right now too.

Excellent addition to the series. It has everything enjoyable from the Super Powered universe going for it, but focuses on more of what the life of an everyday superhero has to go through. Would definitely recommend.

Drew Hayes is a wonder with character development. I'd already read a number of his novels, including Superpowereds Years 1-3. Knowing who the main character was in this book left me a bit hesitant. However, because I love his style I took a flier on this spin-off. In short - I am very glad I did. I'm hoping for a sequel (but not until Superpowereds is wrapped up).

I have been reading everything that Mr. Hayes has written for some time. He has a history of writing fun and believable stories - and I highly recommend you seek his other work. In Corpies he has produced his best work yet - a spin off of the Super Powered series. (And no, you don't have to read that series first for this to make sense, but it would not be a bad idea to do so as it fills in what will be questions. Or you can read this first and then that series. His characterization is excellent in Corpies, and you can really understand and relate to the characters. In places its funny, in others it makes you think. Have you ever considered what it would be like in a world where some people had super powers? While this is set in such a place, its really about the people that drives the story. And does he drive it - like he's in a Ferrari! I think this is the best thing he has written to date, and hope that this series is cointued.

I really did love listening to this book The narrator did a great job and the book gave depth to Titan which made me like him more as a character. I really loved learning how powerful titan actually is and seeing him so powerful yet vulnerable at the same time. Drew Hayes is in the top 5 of my favorite authors and the fact he is self published is great as well.

Seeing this listed as a spinoff almost made me miss this one. This may be the best book in the serries. Titan is a legendary super hero who is also a flawed human. But he is working hard to fix his problems. That storyline alone makes the book worth reading but it also has a LOT of action and great fight scenes. You need to read this one if you like the rest of the serries.
