Riveting historical account of a major NY health institution and its influence on the academic and medical communities. This is a must read for all New Yorkers, as well as anyone who enjoys a fascinating and educational book. I intend to follow it soon with Mr. Oshinsky's Pulitzer winner on polio.

As a medical professional, finding out the history of one of the largest and oldest hospitals in the nation was eye opening. Hat could be boring and numbers focused was kelp entertaining by the stories of the characters, physician and patient alike.

I am not a medical professional nor a medical historian but hisotries like this I find fascinating. I thought this book did a great job of covering the institution as well as grounding it into the laeger general historical context

Definitely everything you ever wanted to know about the first public hospital in the United States and the dedicated doctors, nurses, and scientists that have practiced there and that are practicing there. Gives you a real appreciation for the dedication of these medical and nursing professionals. Kept my interest throughout. This book also illustrates that for 3+ centuries how the public hospital system has taken care of everyone without consideration for their ability to pay. Some of the most skilled doctors and nurses are still found in these great institutions.

The history is interesting. A lot of history and information about NYC. Book is a little "dry", like reading a history book. Informative but doesn't move very easily. If you want to know about Bellevue's background and history, this is your book.

Fascinating!!! I "read" this book via Audible on my commute to and from work each day. It's normally a dreaded time of day for me, but this book had me wishing for traffic. If you work in healthcare or live in NY, I think you will be even more intrigued. I ended up buying it as a gift for a few people this Christmas too.
