I absolutely loved this little novella! The characters are engaging and the scene is set very well for such a small scene! Without spoiling anything, I will keep this review short because I feel it's worth talking about, but I want people to enjoy it for themselves! It is very hard to surprise me in a book, but this author managed to do it and do it in a way that made me smile while also feeling very strongly for the characters. This is very much worth the read and I look forward to more from Alex Lidell!

This book was absolutely phenomenal!
Every page of this book is better than the last with beautiful writing and lovely descriptions.
Alex Lidell is a fantastic author and really made me feel as if I was in the book. Throughout the book I experienced a full range of emotions, which by the end of the novella I wanted more, needed more and I don't know how I will survive without more. I am currently on the verge of just rereading it so i can experience it all over again.
This novella is pure greatness bottled up in 63 pages of pure artwork. That's right, yep, it was that fantastic. The writing in this book is fabulous with wonderful descriptions and and genius plot choices.
I highly recommend reading this book, It will definitely have you feeling all the feels.

Loved this prequel. I picked this book as from the cover it looked like it was set in the 18th - 19th century, a time period I really enjoy reading about. Turns out it has a fantasy setting, but that is still good, another genre I read from regularly.
Found it really entertaining, and did not see the plot twist until seconds before it was revealed.
My only complaint is that I got through it so fast, but that is probably as much to do with how much I enjoyed it as with it being so short.
And, with it ending as it did, I cannot wait to see what happens next

Brilliantly handled, this novella is a must read. I enjoyed it in the same way as I was thrilled by the Hornblower yarns, and for the same reasons. Tightly scripted, with credible, enjoyable characters, making war at sea with a young, royal lady captain in charge. Alex Liddell has brought me on board as a faithful reader.

Compelling story about someone in a position of command for the first time. I like that it shows her as not 100% sure she is doing the right thing, but still willing to make the decisions needed despite that. I can't wait to read future books to see how she settles and grows into her position.

Prequel book following the exploits of the teenage Princess Nile Greysik who is destined to command the Ashing Kingdom's fleet, as she undertakes her maiden command of a captured enemy ship. Enjoyable, exciting, action packed adventure.

A fast paced adventure with twists and turns that are unexpected! A quick read that leaves you wanting more and ready to dive into the next book in the series. The characters are quickly sketched, but sketched well.

I read this prequell novella after I read Air and Ash as is my preference with such.
I thoroughly enjoyed the well described nautical action and engaging characters. This installment adds to the series, without making it self crucial for those who don't care for novellas.

Well written, interesting story and characters; Sid Carley had a great idea. Going by physical descriptions, I don't see this woman sword-fighting with that man and chatting at the same time, she's not Errol Flynn, otherwise, believable story. This novella was given to me by the author for my review.

A rather decent, easy novella to fall into! The characters were easy to grasp, even though the action had to move along quickly to get to the end. Interesting and engaging! Doesn't take long to read and you have an immediate sense of what's happening. Easy to enjoy!

My first read from author Alex Lidell was well-written and entertaining. Since I'm a sea adventure fan the thought of a young, female lieutenant on her first command appealed to me. That's enough, no spoilers, but it was extremely good with unexpected plot twists.

I was a little hesitant at reading this book, even though it was a free offer. I have been burnt in situations like that before.
That being said, when I finally opened it, I couldn't. Stop. Reading!!!!! In a half hour, I fell into a beautiful world of canvas and wood and high waves. The world was crafted so seamlessly that the description guided without overwhelming.
I did see the twist at the end but it was a pleasant revelation and good insight to the feelings of this war without endless lectures of history. I cant wait to read more!!

With 'Tides,' Lidell continues growing her own fun 'YA/Action' blend, this time adding a healthy dose of ocean air and troubled seas to the muc. Nile, a younger child in the royal family, has to find herself as she takes her first command of a shop at sea.
Crisply and evocatively written, I look forwards to Nile's further adventures in 'Tides.'

Thoroughly enjoyed this. The main character was strong, knew her job, still over thought situations but in the moment made the correct decision. Look forward to reading the next chapter in her leadership. Well worth reading.

I got First Command for free on Instafreebie and was pleasantly surprised. The book is well written, the plot and characters are interesting and I am really looking forward to reading the sequel, which is supposed to come out on May 2017. Thank you, Ms. Lindell

My rating 4.8
The novelette First Command (TIDES 0.5) by Alex Lidell is the beginning of the story of Lieutenant Nile Greysik and is very well written. I read it in one breath. Lieutenant Nile Greysik gets the first job as a captain to take the captured ship. But it will eventually prove to be not just a simple task. I really liked the beginning of the sage and I believe that I will read in the foreseeable future and continue the series. The book would recommend fantasy lovers.

I enjoyed this book immensely and have just already pre-ordered "Air and Ash" -- I can not wait to read more of the adventures that await Lieutenant (Princess) Nile Greysik. This book was a pleasure to read and has a wonderful strong and intelligent female protagonist. Alex writes in the style of Tamara Pierce - easy to read book, a page turning adventure that you won't want to put down, a wonderful plot and always a hint of mystery yet to come. I'm really glad I read this book.

Please RateFirst Command: A TIDES novella
I definitely recommend it to fans of Tides or anyone interested in getting a taste of the series.
On another note: The hour I spent reading this was more enjoyable than watching a movie rental, so it is worth the $3.
