This was my introduction to the Bad Kitty series and I was disappointed. I did not feel it was appropriate for an early elementary student. It is illustrated in black and white and very 'busy' drawings. There is a bunny in the story who 'rants' in diatribes that no elementary child would comprehend. I bought this for my 2nd grade granddaughter, but feel her older sister who is in 7th grade might understand some of the innuendos.

Bad Kitty and Puppy have crossed the line! With Kitty's grumpiness and Puppy's drooling problem, (and their constant fighting) it's no surprise that they are sent to Diabla Von Gloom's School for Wayward Pets. There, the dueling duo meet Miss Dee, a very kind teacher, Petunia, a very tough bull-dog who HATES!!! cats, and DR. LAGOMORPH, a diabolical mutant supervillian bunny whose arch-enemies are Captain Fantasticat and Power Mouse (A.K.A. Weird Kitty and the little mouse). Kitty and Puppy go through events at school, like Arts & Crafts and Story time. Puppy seems to be trying his best but Kitty is not cooperating (plus she is really scared Petunia will figure out she's really a cat and not a cow ;) ). Miss Dee likes Kitty and tries to help her be good, but Kitty is not sure she wants to be friends with the other pets in obedience school.

First I have to say I am a HUGE fan of Mr. Bruel's books. I have met Mr. Bruel a couple of times at book signings I went to and he is a very nice person and is always very kind and takes time to talk to me. My favorite Bad Kitty adventure so far is "Bad Kitty Vs. Uncle Murray" and I have to say - this one is my new favorite! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I love the humor! Mr Bruel seemed to have packed even more humor into this Bad Kitty adventure. I love the pictures and Uncle Murray's fun facts (Uncle Murray is the school bus driver)! I love the awesome characters of Dr. Lagomorph and Petunia, they are hysterical! I think Dr. Lagomorph is the best character in the book (besides Bad Kitty and Puppy), and probably the funniest! Like all the other Bad Kitty books, this one has a nice message in it. Bad Kitty really ends up helping all the other pets in school and is kind to them. I love how Mr. Bruel always has a good message in his books.
**Note I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Bad Kitty School Daze is a hilarious graphic novel. Students will relate to the classroom setting, laugh at the antics of the outrageous characters, and maybe even learn a thing or two about cats and dogs from the informational Uncle Murray pages. Whether or not you have yet to discover Bad Kitty, this is an excellent title to check out.

One fine day, Bad Kitty and Puppy land themselves in trouble. Off to obedience school they are sent! This however isn’t like the school your local pet club might offer. Instead, just like human kids, Bad Kitty and Puppy ride a bus to school. They even wear backpacks. And they feel trepidation about the new teacher, who initially seems quite huge and frightening. All of these moments show how well Bruel understands the first day of school experience. Younger students especially will also relate to the obedience school routine, which doesn’t include learning to sit or stay or heel but instead involves going to Circle Time, Arts and Crafts, Show and Tell, and Story Time. One of the most poignant moments happens soon after the onset of school. As Miss Dee ushers everyone into their first class, she tells them that, “I believe you are all GOOD pets and I want you to know that.” Bad Kitty makes a face and Miss Dee adds, “Even you.” The look on Bad Kitty’s face is priceless.

After school activities get underway, personalities become clear. Bad Kitty continues to give attitude. Puppy in contrast displays the most sweetest face, while simultaneously drooling slobber. A militant rabbit insists on calling himself Dr. Lagomorph and interrupting every direction. An oversized bulldog rants about how much she HATES cats: their eyes, their noses, their goofy whiskers. She wants to punch them, bite their heads off, and chew their faces like gum. What saves the text from feeling overly violent is the creative variations Bruel makes of the typefaces. Oh, and it probably helps too that the bulldog’s name is Petunia. :-) One of the cutest scenes is where Petunia starts to scrutinize Bad Kitty, Bad Kitty makes the Moo sound of a cow, and Petunia hugs Bad Kitty as if she were a sister. Actually, pretty much every interaction between Petunia and Bad Kitty is hilarious and tender. Except for maybe the one where Petunia finally figures out Bad Kitty is a…. gulp…. cat!

Uncle Murry’s Fun Facts appear three times in the story. The first two-page spread explains why dogs chase cats. The second offers reasons for why dogs and cats don’t like each other. Pet owners, young and old, might find the information is fairly standard. It could also perhaps perpetuate stereotypes or the idea that dogs and cats will never be anything but eternal enemies. Uncle Murry saves himself with the third spread, which explores the question of whether dogs and cats can become friends. The answer is yes, they can, but only with patience. Uncle Murray then proceeds to provide step-by-step directions of how real pet owners might really create friendships between their dog and cat.

Bruel dedicated Bad Kitty School Daze to teachers. I wholeheartedly recommend the placement of the Bad Kitty books in every school library. And, as a teacher, I say thank you to Bruel for creating a series with such high appeal to reluctant readers, boy readers, and a host of other readers. Including me!

Excellent for late primary school, School Daze sends up everything: Hello Kitty, classroom political correctness, and does it with a huge dollop of epic slapstick humour that had my son and I bent over double with laughter. I have not laughed so hard at a dogs painting ability, or a bulldog conflating a cat with a cow... The setup on this book is a bullseye. Get it, read it, but keep a tissue handy to dry your eyes after you've laughed harder than you ever have!

Bad Kitty and Puppy are causing constant trouble in their house. They owners have had enough and decide to send them both off to school to see if that will help straighten them out. If you have read anoy of the other books you should know that might not be the best idea! At school they cause even more trouble!

A must read for fan of Bad Kitty books! Reluctant readers should check this series out. The books include lots of illustrations. They make a great choice to bridge the gap between picture books and chapter books.

School Daze is the next installment in the Bad Kitty series. My children love it! They loved everything about the story, the bus ride, in the classroom, and how Bad Kitty sees herself. It made my girls giggle with delight! It brings back characters from other books and brings Bad Kitty to life once again. This will be a book that will be read over and over, just like the rest of the series. It is a treasure for my girls.

Bad Kitty follows Kitty - to School! It's only a day school, but with an evil-sounding teacher, a dog who hates cats, and Kitty's nemesis (or bane) Puppy along for the ride, it's off to be a bad day!
