Author Mary Downing Hahn writes one great ghost story aimed at middle-grade readers after another. I'd already read Wait Till Helen Comes,The Old Willis Place: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn, and The Ghost of Crutchfield Hall. (The last is probably the scariest of the lot; I'm a grown woman and I had a bit of trouble sleeping!) All the Lovely Bad Ones ranks with the rest.
Mischievous siblings Travis and Corey Donovan stir up more than just trouble when they pretend to be ghosts at their grandmother's Vermont inn, which had a reputation for being haunted. I won't ruin the read by telling you more, but let me just say that you'll learn a lot about a rather unsavory part of American history.

All the Lovely Bad Ones is probably my favorite MDH ghost story. Two tween/teens go visit their grandmother's inn in Vermont. They learn there that the inn is haunted. Travis and Corey find a brochure on a bookshelf that says the inn used to be a house for the extremely poor a long time ago. They learn that Miss Ada, who was in charge of the children, pretty much beat the tar out of the kids when they disobeyed. One night, she left them outside to sleep, and many of them froze to death.
At the end of the book, find out if the ghost of Miss Ada gets what is coming to her, or if the little prankster ghosts (the "bad ones") are punished. Read the book.

Lovely kids' ghost story, a bit scary for really young ones, I would think. Gives a view into the harshness of 19th century life using modern technology as a medium, which kids might enjoy. Imaginative story and I'm enjoying it at a thoroughly mature age!
The one major peeve I have is that the reader, probably out of ignorance, has given all of the presumably native Vermont characters strong Maine accents! Vermont and Maine accents are diametrically different, and as a native Vermonter, I find it annoying.
Overall, a very good story to listen to for entertainment while doing mindless tasks, which is what I want recorded books for.

All The Lovely Bad Ones by Mary Downing Hahn
Scariest Book Ever!!!
Corey and Travis visit their grandmother at an old inn for the summer. When they arrived, they found out that the inn used to be haunted before their grandmother had bought it. The inn was slow and not very busy, so they decided to try and imitate a ghost to attract more business. Things turned bad one morning when Miss Ada, the person who ran the inn before their grandmother has purchased it, had returned from the dead. You must read this book to see how they got rid of this actual ghost.
The cover of this book does not disappoint. I was spooked after finishing the book. The book was not at all what I had expected it to be. It was a very good fiction book, but also very scary. Mary Downing Hahn is now one of my favorite authors.
You will not want to put the book down. This book makes you want to read more and more. It is a real page turner. I would give this book five stars out of five stars because it is a good book, appropriate for most junior high students and even adults, and scary to read at night. This book would be perfect to read at around a campfire. I cannot wait to read this author's other books!

I am 12 and I recently finished reading this book. A kid named Travis is the narrator, and I think he told this story fantastically. It seemed like he included every detail, and it didn't jump from place to place like many stories that I've read do. This story can be described as eerie and it always left you on the edge of your seat wondering what was going to happen next. This was my first book by Mary Downing Hahn, and I can honestly say I was not let down. It is now one of my favorie books, and Mary Downing Hahn is definitely one of my favorite authors. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they like ghost stories or not. If they don't, they definitely will after reading this book!

I chose this rating because I think this story had a little bit of everything in it, like comedy, horror, supernatural, and it's very interesting.
I would definitely recommend this to all my friends and family and just anyone who is looking for a good book.
I think this is now officially my new favorite book, and I think Mary Downing should make a sequel.

Corey and her brother Travis spend their summer vacation with their grandmother in Vermont. their grandmother owns an Inn that was built in the late 1700's and at one time was A Poor Farm. So the two kids decided they were going to play pranks on the guests. In doing so they have awakened the "real spirits" that haunt the Inn. What do these spirits want? How does Corey and Travis help the spirits move on?
Another great novel by Mary Downing Hahn. She grabs the readers attention along with the history of this paranormal story.
