The author Odell really sets up the reader for an intense experience. I really enjoyed this book and felt like I had gone through somewhat of an experience by the time I was done. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good read that is interested in a book that has a little danger attached to it.

Terry Odell's "When Danger Calls" (Blackthorne, Inc Book 1) is a good read, in what maybe a great new series!
Ryan Harper is trying to recover from serious injury after a second mission ends in disaster. After leaving the
hospital, he goes home to his fathers ranch, that he left a long time ago, hoping to fly 'under the radar ' and
figure out who betrayed him.

Some books will stay with you long after you read them. This is not one of those books, and that may not be such a bad thing because it is a fun and quick read that useful to have around to kill time with. Not bad.

This is my second Blackthorne, Inc book--and I couldn't put it down! Another one of those where I stayed up too late reading, and chose to read over lunch hours instead of eating lunch! I liked Frankie and Ryan's story--can't wait to read more Blackthorne books! Thanks Terry!

When Danger Calls is the first book in the Blackthorne Inc. series. It can be read as a standalone. There is violence and adult content. The storyline is average but enjoyable and worth reading for an escape.

Loved this book. Espionage and romance. The characters jump off the pages and keep you on the edge of your seat while you read it. Fast paced intrigue with some romance thrown in for good measure and also some humor with Ryan and Frankie. As the plot thickens Ryan does not who to trust anymore. It is like reading three stories at once. Add kidnapping to the mix and things get really interesting. Putting Wolf the dog in the picture is genious. This was a book that kept me up way into the night reading. It was a delicious hot read. Great job! Looking forward to more of this series. I voluntarily reviewed this book.

Frankie’s trying to hold it together, caring for her delightful daughter, watching over her mother’s romance, and struggling to keep her jobs well separated, because who wants a school-teacher to work at a bar. But the bar is where Frankie meets Ryan, and fate seems determined to throw them together until romance starts to bloom.
Of course, this is an uneasy romance. Frankie’s babbling meets Ryan’s taciturn stillness. Frankie’s ordinary world meets danger and terror. And Frankie’s delightful daughter worms her way into everyone’s hearts.
The dialog is fun and natural, especially when a little girl steals the scenes. Love scenes are sensually detailed. And danger involves the usual chapter of accidents, guesses and missteps. When Mom’s finances come into question, who knows whether terrorists or thieves will win the day?
When Danger Calls is a fun tale with a beautiful Colorado setting, pleasing characters, good humor, detailed sensuality, and just enough excitement and mystery to keep the pages turning.
Disclosure: I found a free ecopy and I enjoyed it.

STORY BRIEF:
Ryan is a former Navy SEAL who currently works for a covert ops group, protecting national security. Ryan goes to Panama to get a CD with information. He is attacked and barely escapes. He quits his job and stays with his dad for awhile on their ranch in Montana. Frankie is a single mom who quit her job and moved to Montana to stay with her mother Anna. Frankie works as a substitute art teacher in the local school and a part-time cocktail waitress. Anna has an elderly boyfriend Bob. Frankie fears that Bob may be after Anna for her money and that he might have something to do with some recent accidental injuries to Anna.
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
The two main characters are likeable. Some mercenaries come to Montana searching for the CD which causes danger for Ryan and those around him. This danger part of the story is entertaining and good. There is a mystery about what is going on with Bob and Anna which is not as good - see Spoiler below. A third storyline is Ryan's interaction and developing relationship with Molly, Frankie's 5-year-old daughter, which is nice. The ending is pleasantly warm. I had two minor problems described below.
For several scenes the author used a cliffhanger style of writing which had the effect of "commercial interruptions" for me. I prefer that the author finish each scene at a logical conclusion before switching to another scene with other characters. For example on page 80, Ryan and Dalton are searching in the woods. Dalton says "I think I've got a little problem here." "That Dalton had spoken told him whatever the problem was, stealth wasn't necessary. Still, he regretted that his Glock was in his nightstand drawer." The author then switches to a Frankie scene for three pages. Then the author returns to the Dalton scene showing what Dalton was worried about. A similar issue was a question that was never answered. On page 99 Ryan is looking for something in the woods with his dog Wolf. "He was about to turn around when he heard Wolf's whine." The author then switches to a scene with Frankie. When the author returns to the Ryan scene, Ryan is entering his cabin, and there is no mention of what Wolf's whine was about. This unsettled me.
CAUTION SPOILER:
My second problem was the following. Frankie has discovered some problems with Anna's bank activity. Frankie needs to discuss this with Anna to determine if Bob is stealing from her. But Frankie never gets to have this discussion for the following reasons. Anna doesn't feel well and needs to sleep. Anna packs her things early in the morning and leaves the house before Frankie wakes up - for a several day trip with Bob. Anna is happy about being with Bob, and Frankie doesn't want to spoil her mood. These delays kept happening through too much of the story. I was annoyed that this mystery continued too long simply because Frankie couldn't have a five minute conversation with Anna. I found myself frustrated rather than intrigued.

When high adventure reaches Frankie door, she not prepared...
Open the pages of When Danger Calls, and step into an action filled journey you can't escape. Terry does an amazing job of story telling. Her characters are well rounded, emotional, and flawed in a captivating sort of way. Their unpredictability and change keeps you guessing what lies just ahead. There is never a dull moment and the tension builds from start to end. There is some open sexual descriptions, done in a gentle yet intimate manner.
It's like Barbie meets Wolverine. Two totally different worlds intertwine and sparks fly on all levels. Small town school teacher and international terrorist fighter encounter each other in the local hospital. Ryan Harper's father was injured and Frankie's mother had a health scare. Distraught and exhausted, Ryan holds his head, elbows on his knees. Tears threaten and his trembling hands wipe angrily across his cheeks. Frankie sees his distress and offers her help. Ryan tries to shut her out, but finds comfort in her gentleness. A favor is extended and the consequences for all are beyond imagination.
A backdrop of vast Montana splendor, family challenges, and international surprises sends Ryan Harper on an emotional rollercoaster. When Frankie and little daughter Molly manage to reach his heart, he loses clarity and focus. When she asks for his assistance, he returns the good deed, but it's more than he bargained for. Just by association, mother and daughter become part of the dangerous international picture, their lives in danger. Ryan must detach for their safety. But is it too late? What are the chances? The odds appear to be against them or are they? Who is to be trusted?
When Danger Calls is a great read, especially for the adventurer with a romantic heart. The gauntlet of emotions will leave you breathless. I was hooked from the first and page, closing the book was not an option.

Following his second failed black ops mission in which people died and he is injured, Blackthorne agent Ryan Harper is put on medical leave. He knows that everyone at the private security firm assumes he turned rogue, but he believes someone inside caused the two failures; they were set up and he plans to bring that person down as a little girl who died in the first fiasco haunts him. Thus Ryan retrieved the container he was sent to obtain, but tells his boss otherwise so he can learn why something allegedly minor caused deaths.
Ryan returns to his hometown of Broken Bow, Montana to stay with his Pop on the ranch. He meets Gladys a waitress at the Three Elks and is attracted to her. Ryan later learns she is an elementary school art teacher Frankie Castor, a single mom to precocious six year old Molly. Frankie worries about her mom who has suffered two injuries since starting a relationship with Bob Dwyer. As Ryan and Frankie fall in love, he comes to the rescue of her, Molly, and Molly's "friend" Mr. Snuggles even as someone wants what he possesses from his last mission; that person is willing to harm his loved ones something that is unacceptable to Ryan.
This is an exciting romantic suspense that grips readers from the onset when Ryan's cakewalk mission turns ugly and never slows down as his work arrives at Big Sky Country. The cast is very strong especially the lead couple and their immediate family. Although major coincidence twice involving land takes somewhat away from this fine thriller, fans will appreciate Ryan's reactions WHEN DANGER CALLS.

I've been reading all the Blackthorne, Inc books. Not my favorite one, but always enjoyable with several twists. This book is about Ryan going back home after two failed missions are blamed on him. He's struggling with the deaths of the people he was trying to protect. Frankie and her daughter return to her home town to take care of her mother's health and finances. After meeting at a bar where Frankie holds a second job, they meet again at the ER when bother their parents are being treated. The terrorists think Ryan has important secret information that he was able to obtain on his last mission. This puts Frankie and her daughter in danger because of their relationship to Ryan. So Ryan must stop the terrorist before they hurt any one he loves.
