Growin' Up White chronicles the odyssey of Ricky Stoner's unique upbringing in hostile and segregated Indiana during the early 50's . It is a wonderful story of how The Stoner family's black quirky housekeeper,Georgey, molded the habitude of young Ricky. Dwight Ritter's beautifully crafted opus is a page turner that grips the reader from start to finish.

Although it was not my personal experience, "Growin' Up White" gave me a glimpse of an era that shaped the lives of so many Americans. This book is a heartfelt account that will not only open your eyes but will also allow you to feel the author's emotions. Well written and thoughtful. Give yourself a gift and read this book.

For a highly entertaining book try Dwight Ritter's book Growin Up White. It is a coming-of-age story of a white boy raised in a black neighborhood in Indianapolis during the civil rights movement in the 1950's. Rick Stoner, middle kid, navigates his way through school, his family, the neighborhood and his discovery of girls. It is a fun "read" told with wit and humor.

Loved this book. The characters were real and vivid. The exploration of relationships and friendship between the races was written with sensitivity and compassion. Although it is set in the 50s and 60s, the same issues still exist, unfortunately. All the more reason to read it and reflect on how we can improve the situation.

Terrific. Dwight Ritter sketches a remarkably authentic portrait of the way it was in my youthful years in the northwest quarter of Indianapolis. Thanks for the nostalgia and the insight not only about growing up but getting along in the fifties urban American environment.

This story is about real life sixty years ago, as well as today. Ritter writes an engaging and instructive novel which speaks to it's readers on many levels. It is highly visual, entertaining and humorous, but also a serious summary of the nineteen fifties racial issues, which continue to be relevant. An excellent read and highly recommended!

I loved this story!!! I live in Indianapolis, but did not grow up here. I volunteer in the area where the characters grew up and learned life lessons. It was a wonderful story and I recommend it as a wonderful addition to any book club. Bring us the next one Dwight!

I loved the book and its characters. The author does a wonderful job of bringing us up to speed with the racial strife that existed in the early 60's and that unfortunately still exists today. And.he does a marvelous job of highlighting how important religion was and still is today.
A must read.

Powerful! I had trouble puting the book down yet sturggled to realize how racism destroys a human being. Yay for Georgey! Loved her character.
The book was given to me by a friend. Can't thank her enough!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Well written, entertaining, and touching. Not having lived through that time in our country's history I can well imagine that this story was pretty close to reality for some.

A captivating book with rich characters that I couldn't let go. I didn't skip one word which I tend to do if there is too much fill-in detail. I loved every chapter from start to finish and every character.
