Overall, I enjoyed the first 3 books of this series. Dead and Alive has a satisfactory ending on its own, but leaves room for the sequels. I liked the characters and the relationships between Erika 5 and Jocko and between the 2 detectives. As I look around my office, I wonder how many of my co-workers are from the New Race.

I enjoyed the story but there were uneven parts that didn't contribute to the story and just felt thrown in. In addition, I was often glad that I was reading this story on my Kindle because I needed to look up several unfamiliar words and some words were so far outside of common use that they were not even in the Kindle dictionary.

If any author could take a classic story, twist it, bend it, and then entwine it with the original story ; it is Dean Knootz and Kevin Anderson.
Treat yourself to this first book of the series, you will be glad you did. Now onto the second book.

What a lot of the other reviewers are neglecting to say is that this book begins where book two left off. The action in all three books takes place over a 48-hour period. Koontz is known for writing books whose action covers a small space of time. Hence his pace is usually breakneck. Dead and Alive did not disappoint!

As you know, book two ended with Victor's New Race starting to drop bits of their programs. The iron grip he thought he had on his creations is dissolving. Some of the replicants he has put in the place of key New Orleans citizens whom he wanted to control have begun behaving against his programming. Tired of waiting for the order to mass murder weak humans, they've begun their own private Armageddon.

Meanwhile cops Carson and Michael are working with Victor's first creation, Deucalion, who is determined to bring Victor's evil rule to an end or die trying. In this book Carson and Michael are still trading barbs, Michael as irreverent as ever. And we are shown how Victor's New Race is falling apart and how Victor, megalomaniac that he is, refuses to see it until the very end. I was pleased with Erika Five's fate because I identified with the poor wives. And I finally got to find out what was in the glass coffin in Victor's secret sitting room. I actually guessed right about that one! This was a fun read for me. It answered all of my questions. The ending left me wondering whether there might be a book four. And there was a reference to a monastery that Odd Thomas spent time at in Brother Odd. So there was a little crossover action with another Koontz book that I enjoyed.

Yes, I agree that it was too short. I wanted it to last longer. I wanted to know more about the characters. But I believe it acheived what the third book in a trilogy should do: Wrap up the tale in an exciting, memorable way. Of course, some will disagree with me. However, no writer can please all of the readers all of the time. He simply writes a book that expresses his vision. That's all he CAN do!

I absolutely loved all of Koontz's Frankenstein Books. He has an updated version of this subject. I could not wait for the next ones to come out. My adult children also read them and enjoy as much as I did.

Like almost all of Dean Koontz's books this novel keeps you spellbound and unable to put it down once you've started reading it. I love this book and its series because of its bizarre and cool storyline.

Excellent story, kept me wondering what would be next and how it would happen. Has many characters who struggle with themselves and their fate.
I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the Frankenstein book or movies. It's an homage to the past and a brand new story at the same time.

The idea to keep the original story intact and just bring us a new chapter 200 years later is just great! The story, as usual with a Koontz book, unfolds at break neck speed. I mean it never lows down, right up to the very last page! Be forwarned, there is nothing that even comes close to closure in this book. Its as if they wrote the entire story and picked the most suspenceful parts and end the book there. Then smiling , they watch as we anxiously wait for next volume to come.

If you like Koontz, horror or SiFi please go out and get this book. But take one word of advice, you may want to wait till we are a little closer to the release date for the second book. I'm in anguish knowing I have to wait four months!

I originally bought this book for the kindle, and by the moment I started reading it to the time that I finished it I immediatly wanted to read more...so what did I do? I bought the whole series. This is an amazing thriller for people who love the classic Frankenstein, and the newest cast of characters. Something about Deucalion is strangly romantic causing people to be drawn quickly to the story. I highly reccomend this book to people who love thrillers.

I bought this book because I wanted something to read. It sounded interesting, but I wasn't sure I wanted to read it. Every time i went to the store to look at books I was drawn to the book so I decided to try it. I loved the book and I had trouble putting it down. When I was done with this book I immediately bought the next book.

Dean Koontz is a master of the literary world, but this series raises the bar even higher. I have never read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein so I was interested to see what one of my favorite authors could do and he took it in a whole new direction. I got caught up in the entire series and couldn't put down the book to sleep at night. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys suspense
